Daniel Cormier’s teammate Cain Velasquez speaks candidly about Jon Jones’ drug test failure at UFC 214.
Many fighters on the UFC roster rightfully are not too pleased about Jon Jones’ recent drug test infraction at UFC 214. Middleweight champion Michael Bisping, for one, is calling for a lifetime ban to be slapped on Jones for the second PED-related mess in the UFC.
Former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez also has some ill feelings about the issue. When asked about it during a media scrum in South Korea, he did not hold back on his words for Jones.
“It all comes down to people being dirty,” Velasquez said (transcript via MMA Fighting). “Like, our gym, me, Daniel Cormier, we don’t need extra substances to make us better. We do it by working hard. We’ve done this since we were kids. We learned how to train, and train right, and go out there and be competitive. So, if you bring steroids or just some kind of performance-enhancing drug into it — if it’s not allowed, it’s not allowed.”
“We want everybody to be on the same page, so for him to do that, for Jon Jones to do that, that’s bullshit,” he added. “That’s f–king bullshit. Why? Did you not want to lose to Daniel? Is that what it was? Why?”
Despite some PED implications made by his former opponents, Velasquez never tested positive for any banned substance, and was even one of the fighters who were calling for random testing back in 2013. In light of the Jones issue, he continues to call for fair play in the sport.
“We want everybody on the same playing field. When we go out there, we want it to be even as far as that goes, and having it come down to training, preparation, and being able to fight,” Velasquez said.
“The guy that goes out there and shines on that day is the guy who’s going to win, and it’s generally from working hard and being prepared — and not from anything else.”
