Video: Andrey Koreshkov looks to ‘VIP fan’ for advice between rounds at Bellator 153
Check out footage of Bellator welterweight champion Andrey Koreshkov looking towards the VIP section of the crowd for cornering advice during his title fight against Benson Henderson at Bellator 153.
On April 22, 2016, from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT, the main event of Bellator 153 saw Andrey ‘Spartan’ Koreshkov retain his welterweight title by spoiling the promotional debut of former UFC lightweight champion ‘Smooth’ Ben Henderson. Throughout the dominant 5 round assault, Koreshkov can be seen receiving instructions from not only his corner, but also a special ‘fan’ sitting in a VIP seat.
Included in the terms of the 3 year ban from competition, the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) prohibits Shlemenko from cornering anyone who is competing in MMA, i.e., Andrey Koreshkov. The Bellator brand has banned Shlemenko from battling under their banner for the duration of his suspension; however, the promotion allowed ‘Storm’ to compete outside of the CSAC’s jurisdiction for the M-1 Global promotion in his native land of Russia.
Just as Bellator has upheld the CSAC’s suspension of Alexander Shlemenko, the Viacom promotion also enforced the ‘no cornering’ stipulation at Bellator 153. Just as any Bellator fan would do, Alexander Shlemenko bought a VIP ticket in order to be up close to the cage during the Koreshkov vs. Henderson main event. The Bellator security staff was seen approaching Shlemenko in his VIP position to reiterate the fact that he is not allowed in ‘Spartan’s’ corner. To further ensure ‘Storm’ would not make his way to the cage between rounds, Bellator placed several staff members directly between the former champion and the Bellator cage.
In between each round, Andrey Koreshkov is seen sitting on a stool looking over his right shoulder towards an animated Alexander Shlemenko shouting instruction. Did ‘Storm’ violate the terms of his suspension by aiding ‘Spartan’ from a distance in between rounds?
For clarification as to whether or not such behavior is in violation of the general terms of a CSAC suspension, BloodyElbow.com spoke with California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer Andy Foster who had this to say:
This is one of those gray areas. The definitive thing is that they bought a ticket. They did not receive a credential and were not using a license to actually corner. While we do have some jurisdiction over the ticket, it is how the promoter generates revenue on the event and we are not going to prevent this person from buying a ticket. If that ticket happens to get them close to the corner of their fighter then that is just the way it is. It is not a violation of their suspension.
