Watch Erberth Santos jump into the crowd and start a fight.
The gentle art took a brutal turn last night as a brawl broke out “BJJ Stars: Black belt Edition” in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
In the main event of the evening, ADCC champion Felipe Pena faced off with IBJJF world champion Erberth Santos. Despite an innocuous start to proceedings, things took a turn for the worse when Santos claimed to be injured during a Pena sweep attempt. The match was called off and amidst the injury call, Santos got into a war of words with one of the attendees, who is reported as being Pena’s black belt Daniel Thebit (h/t Jiu Jitsu Times).
Santos’ knee injury appeared to spontaneously resolve itself as the Brazilian got to his feet and sprinted into the crowd before attacking multiple spectators. Santos has built a reputation as a bad sport over recent years, but this is a new low for talented grappler.
The melee lasted a number of minutes before Santos was taken away, but it remains to be seen if he will suffer any ramifications. As BJJ has no real governing body, it will be up to individual organizations to ban Santos and it remains to be seen what legal consequences could occur from this incident.
