Cain Velasquez teases of a superfight with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
Cain Velasquez vs. Jon Jones has always been a dream fantasy match-up for many fans, but could the bout soon become a reality?
Speaking to TMZ Sports in a recent interview, former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Velasquez said that he is ‘definitely’ interested in a superfight against ‘Bones’ and believes he has what it takes to beat the current light heavyweight kingpin.
“Definitely,” Cain Velasquez told TMZ when asked about the possibility of fighting Jones. “Anyone, you know. That’s why I’m in this sport, to fight the best guys, to be the best out there. To me, it’s just go out there, perform and win and just take on the best guys.
“I think I could [beat him]. I think I’m good enough. Jon Jones, he’s an amazing athlete. I’ve watched him in all of his fights, I know what he’s capable of. Again, every guy poses a great challenge, I think he does as well. I think I could beat him, yeah.”
Velasquez, who trains under renowned coach, Javier Mendez, at San Jose’s American Kickboxing Academy, hasn’t fought since his 2016 TKO of Travis Browne at UFC 200. After being sidelined with a plethora of injuries, the 36-year-old is back in the training room and claims to be fully healed ahead of his upcoming heavyweight bout against Franis Ngannou at UFC on ESPN 1. The event takes place this Saturday, Feb. 17 at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.
As for Jones, the three-time light heavyweight champ will defend his title against streaking LHW contender Anthony Smith at UFC 235. The PPV takes place next month, March 2nd at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
If both men win their respective bouts, and Velasquez then goes on to capture the heavyweight title, the UFC may consider booking a possible superfight. Jones has continually teased of a move up to the heavyweight division, although the 31-year-old has no interest in challenging current champ Daniel Cormier for the title.
