Video: Conor McGregor’s friend, Irish boxing star Michael Conlan wins second pro bout

Two fights, two stoppage wins for Olympic medalist and Irish boxing star Michael Conlan.

Irish boxing sensation Michael Conlan (2-0, 2 KOs) picked up another win in his young professional career. The 2012 Olympic bronze medalist and 2015 World Amateur Championships gold medalist took on Mexico’s Alfredo Chanez (4-5-2 NCs, 2 KOs), whose sole purpose was to be a live body for Conlan to style on. Job done.

While Conor McGregor escorted his friend Conlan in the walkout for his pro debut in New York, the UFC star was absent for Friday’s fight at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois. The announced crowd of 2,574 was far less than the 5,102 who came to see him at MSG Theater, but the Irish faithful were as boisterous as ever.

Conlan used a three-punch combination to drop Chanez in the opening round of this scheduled six-rounder. The 25-year-old frequently switched from orthodox to southpaw, taking a few slapping punches from Chanez on occasion. In round 2, a low blow by Conlan caused Chanez to fall to the ground in agony. He was rolling on the canvas and seemingly trying to goad the referee into punishing Conlan, but no dice.

In round 3, Conlan threw right hands to the body while Chanez was clinching with him, and the referee called it a knockdown. Chanez beat the count but was still grimacing, so it was mercifully called off. This was standard “young prospect comfortably beats low-level opponent” stuff that you see all the time, except Conlan has been promoted as a future superstar, hence its televised main event status. UniMas carried the card in the US, while BoxNation in the UK and RTE in Ireland televised this live.

Conlan, who competes at super bantamweight (122 lbs), is expected to be on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Jeff Horn fight, which will take place in Australia in early July.
