At Bellator 245 kickboxing star Raymond Daniels got a no contest after smashing Peter Stanonik below the belt, twice!
Last night’s Bellator 245 will live on in our memories thanks to a dubious distinction: being one off few—if not the only—MMA events to feature two fights being called off thanks to brutal strikes to the groin.
The first fight to end this way was on the undercard. That’s when Tyrell Fortune kneed Jack May in the balls so hard he could not continue. That fight was ruled a no contest, since the knee was deemed unintentional and that not enough rounds had been completed to go to the scorecards for a decision.
The second, and worse, incident of testicular torture came on the main card when the ‘Real Deal’ Raymond Daniels took on Peter Stanonik. Daniels fought the entire first round throwing sensational, and sometimes ridiculous, spinning and jumping kicks at his opponent.
Early in the second round one of those spinning kicks, which was aimed far too low to hit Stanonik in the gut, landed square between the legs. Stanonik was dropped, his mouth piece fell out and he drooled in agony. Thanks to the Mohegan Sun Arena being virtually empty it was easy to hear just how much pain poor Stanonik was in.
Stanonik toughed it out, though. He took almost five minutes to recuperate and then came out ready to compete.
Then, seconds later, Daniels did the exact same thing; showing either callousness, ineptitude, disregard for the rules or all of the above. Stanonik again dropped to the ground. And again his literal cries were easy to hear. With Stanonik whimpering, ‘Oh my God’ the fight was called off.
Daniels was given the benefit of the doubt and was rewarded with not having a DQ loss put on his record.
