It was not a great performance but Gervonta Davis was able to get another knockout win.

Gervonta Davis (23-0, 22 KOs) ended his 2019 with another victory, stopping Cuba’s Yuriorkis Gamboa (30-3, 18 KOs) in the 12th and final round in front of more than 14,000 fans at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

Davis captured a secondary WBA lightweight title, which I’m just going to immediately dismiss as a garbage belt. The WBA likes to hand out belts for fun, and the real WBA champ is Vasyl Lomachenko, so don’t fall for any line about Davis being a “two-division champion.”

There was a big weigh-in controversy on Friday, as the whole procedure took seemingly forever. Gervonta missed on his first attempt, made it on his second try, but was still fined by Georgia’s commission because they weren’t present for the re-weigh.

Whatever the case, Davis largely dominated Gamboa but did look a bit sluggish, with Davis himself calling it a C+ performance. Gamboa hung tough for as long as he could, getting dropped in the second and eighth rounds but remaining willing to slug it out with the Baltimore native. Gamboa had major problems with his balance from round two onward, indicating something was wrong with his shoe, and said post-fight that he may have ruptured his Achilles.

Davis closed the show with a series of brutal lefts, including an uppercut that sent Gamboa down for the third knockdown of the fight and a TKO finish.
