Russian cruiserweight contender Murat Gassiev, considered by Gennady Golovkin’s trainer to be ‘the next Golovkin,’ improved to 23-0 with a sensational KO win over Jordan Shimmell. Watch this KO of the Year contender for yourself.
For all of the (rightful) complaints about the state of boxing, we’ve been treated to some vicious televised KOs over the past month. Mason Menard gave us a whopper of a KO last month, Canelo Alvarez sent Amir Khan into the cruel land of unexpected unconsciousness just two weeks ago, and now we have a new entrant in the KO of the Year contest.
Murat Gassiev (23-0-1 NC, 17 KOs) is one of the top prospects in the cruiserweight (200 lbs) division, a weight class that scarcely receives any attention in North America. The 22-year-old Russian was put in a Premier Boxing Champions on FS1 main event slot against American Jordan Shimmell (20-2, 16 KOs), who had come into this bout with just one defeat and had never been knocked down in his career. Gassiev changed that at the end of the 1st round, destroying Shimmell with a massive left hook. No count was necessary. Shimmell required oxygen at ringside, but was able to get back to his feet and congratulate Gassiev.

By the way, Gassiev is trained by Abel Sanchez, the man behind the development of one Gennady Golovkin. Sanchez has gone as far as to say that Gassiev will become the next Golovkin. That’s certainly GGG-esque power we witnessed tonight.
