The wound may still be sore, but relive the rollercoaster that was the road to UFC 249.
There were a lot of moving parts to UFC 249 and you can relive the entire debacle in SBN MMA’s new feature video, UFC 249 Timeline: The Cursed Card.
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis turned UFC 249 on its head. It started with the promotion forcing to pivot from its planned venue in Brooklyn, New York. Next came the disappointing removal of lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Justin Gaethje was pegged as a substitute and the fight against Tony Ferguson was changed to an interim title clash.
The UFC considered holding the event overseas before turning to Tachi Palace Casino Resort in California — outside the reach of the California government and athletic commission. Disney and ESPN stepped in after California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed concern. Many of those fights have migrated to a proposed May 9th event.
