Vinny Magalhaes removed from Titan FC 29 co-main event with ‘minor injury’

Vinny Magalhaes was scheduled to fight twice in 36 days for Titan FC “assuming he’s healthy,” but it turns out he can’t.

Magalhaes, who battled Keenan Cornelius to a draw in a grappling match at Metamoris 4 earlier this month, was forced out of Friday’s Titan FC 29 co-main event bout with Dustin Jacoby (9-3) due to a minor back injury. Strikeforce veteran Lucas Lopes (29-17) steps in the co-main event.

Titan FC COO Lex McMahon confirmed the news with MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani on Tuesday. Headlined by a lightweight title bout between UFC veterans Mike Ricci and George Sotiropoulos, Titan FC 29 takes place at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, N.C.

“Vinny’s injury will in no way jeopardize his title fight against Jason Brilz at Titan FC 30 on September 26th at the Cedar Park Center,” McMahon said.

Magalhaes (11-7, 1 no-contest) is scheduled to fight Brilz (22-5-1) for the light heavyweight championship in Cedar Park, TX. In his last MMA bout, “Pezao” tapped Jorge Gonzales in the first round in Mexico. Brilz has won four in a row since leaving the UFC in 2011.

Both Titan FC 29 and 30 will air on CBS Sports Network.
