After a 2-2 start to her Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) career, Michelle Waterson has found a way to gain some momentum by winning her last three fights against formidable foes such as Felice Herrig, Cortney Casey and most recently defeating Karolina Kowalkiewicz at UFC on ESPN 2 last night (March 30, 2019).
After her win, “Karate Hottie” called for a shot at the women’s Strawweight title, something she says she is more than ready for.
“I fee like if I didn’t feel comfortable calling out for the gold, then I shouldn’t be asking for it. If they, if that what is next then I will be ready for it,” she told ESPN. “I am confident in myself, my skills and ability. At the end of the day we are all just human and we all bleed the same blood. We breathe the same air, so, why not me?”
Currently ranked at No. 9 in the world, Waterson can expect a huge bump on the official rankings following her win over the former title contender. Whether or not it’s good enough to leapfrog the other contenders, is another question.
Indeed, with Tatiana Suarez and Nina Ansaroff set to tango at the upcoming at UFC 238 event in June, the winner of that matchup could certainly make her case for a shot at the strap, which will be defended by division queen, Rose Namajunas, against Jessica Andrade at UFC 237 on May 11.
To avoid further debate, why not pit Waterson against the winner of Suarez vs Ansaraoff for the right to fight for the belt?
