This Sunday’s “WEC 49: Varner vs. Shalorus” event has seen a change of fighters to one of the bouts that will make the televised portion of the show. On Tuesday Ed Ratcliff (7-2) pulled out of his fight against Chris Horodecki (13-2) with less than a week before the event due to injury. Stepping in will be undefeated Danny “Boy” Downes (6-0).
The news was first reported by TopMMANews.com, who picked up a post by Ratcliff on his Facebook page.
“I wanna say sorry to all the fans, family, and friends for having to pull out on such late notice. Even more importantly I wanna appologise to Chris Horodecki for going thru all of that hard work and not getting the final release u deserve. I wish u the best. Sorry everyone.!!!!!!”
WEC 49 will take place this Sunday, June 20, at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The Versus network will carry the main card live on their station.
Downes last competed at a King Of The Cage event in April, having defeated Bruce Johnson via TKO (punches) late in the first round. He’s won 5 of his 6 victories via TKO, with four stoppages in the first round of those wins.
The Duke Roufus-trained product (Downes) is 6-0, with five wins coming by way of knockout. Known for his electric striking, Downes is also a cerebral fighter who owns degrees in International Affairs and German from Marquette University.
The Horodecki vs. Downes bout will be featured on the televised portion of the WEC 49 event.
