Former UFC champion Chris Weidman looks back on the five losses of his career prior to UFC VEGAS 6: ‘LEWIS VS. OLEINIK’.
After going undefeated for 13 fights within a six-year period, Chris Weidman is suddenly on a skid. The former UFC middleweight champion is now 1-5, beginning with his 2015 title fight loss to Luke Rockhold.
The 36-year-old Weidman is very aware of the predicament he’s in. He knows he needs to “get a freaking W.” But at the same time, he isn’t beating himself up, knowing the quality of competition he’s faced.
“It’s all fights that they’re top five guys that I was right in there with and there’s no shame in that,” Weidman said in a recent pre-fight scrum for Saturday’s Las Vegas event (via MMA Junkie).
“They’re all guys I was doing really well against them, other than the (Dominick) Reyes fight. He got me, he kind of got me early, so I wasn’t able to get as much out of that as I’d like to.”
Weidman will co-headline this weekend’s event against number 11-ranked middleweight Omari Akhmedov. Without too much expectations, he’s simply looking to perform to the best of his abilities.
“That’s sometimes how mixed martial arts work,” he said. “So I just know what my potential is, and I know that I did everything right in training, and I’m just going to go out there and put everything on the line and we’ll see what happens.”
The last time Weidman tasted victory was in 2017, when he defeated Kelvin Gastelum via third-round submission.
