Werdum, who last fought at UFC 213 where he lost a decision to Alistair Overeem, started talking over Ferguson to the media and eventually had to be separated from ‘El Cucuy’ and removed from the stage.
Werdum’s manager, Ali Abdel-Aziz, told Ariel Helwani on a recent edition of The MMA Hour that, on any other day, the Brazilian would have snapped and folded the much smaller Ferguson like a deck chair.
Abdel-Aziz is proud that Werdum kept his cool and didn’t attack Ferguson.
“In a way, honestly, I’m so proud of Fabricio Werdum not to fold his ass and beat his ass,” Abdel-Aziz said, per MMA Fighting’s Marc Raimondi. “And the reason why he didn’t do that is probably because he didn’t want to lose the UFC main event [at UFC 216] and he respects Chris Costello. That’s what he told me. But on a normal day, Fabricio would have beat his ass.”
Werdum started calling Ferguson a ‘f*ggot’ in Portuguese and was forced to apologize to the LGBT community. Abdel-Aziz, who doesn’t think the word should be used publicly, says Ferguson also insulted Werdum with the same slur but wasn’t called out on it.
“It’s insulting to other people, 100 percent,” Abdel-Aziz said. “I don’t think anybody should be discriminated against because of gender, race. This is something I suffer from every day and my kids suffer from. It doesn’t matter your race, your gender, your sexual choice, it’s your business. As far as I know, God only judges people, nobody should be judging other people.”
Abdel-Aziz says that Ferguson plays the ‘crazy’ guy to the media but sees fear behind his eyes.
“He wants to be the crazy guy, you don’t see his eyes,” he said. “The mysterious guy. Get the fuck out of here. He’s a joke, he’s a clown.”
Ferguson will take on top prospect Kevin Lee in an interim lightweight title bout at UFC 216. Werdum, 40, will also take on Derrick Lewis on the main card. The pay-per-view takes place this Saturday, October 7, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
