What’s next for Santiago Ponzinibbio after making quick work of Gunnar Nelson at UFC Glasgow?

Santiago Ponzinibbio made the most out of his first-ever headlining duties with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), knocking out Gunnar Nelson in the main event of UFC Fight Night 113 — which went down from inside SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland yesterday (Sun., July 16, 2017) on FOX Sports 1.

The win was his fifth straight overall and undoubtedly the biggest of his career. In taking out “Gunni” so convincingly — eye poke or not — “Gente Boa” likely secured himself a top 10 ranking, which means bigger and better things moving forward.

After his win, Santiago called for a matchup against Carlos Condit or Neil Magny. Again, I don’t like the Magny matchup just yet, and Carlos Condit hasn’t even hinted at the chance of returning to action since teasing retirement over a year ago.

For my taste, I’d like to see Santiago face Rafael dos Anjos in his next outing. “RDA” made a successful transition to 170 pounds by defeating Tarec Saffiedine a few months ago after having some bad luck at Lightweight. And though he isn’t an established welterweight just yet, “RDA” — the former 155-pound champion — has a higher ranking than Ponzi at the moment.

Should this bout see the light of day, dos Anjos will undoubtedly be giving up some size come fight night, as Santiago is a big 170-pounder with some heavy hands. But, those are the risks one takes when moving up 15 pounds to take on bigger boys.

The good thing about this potential match up as it can easily headline a Fight Night card, perhaps, UFC’s proposed trip to South America later this year. Colby Covington also had his eyes on “RDA,” but I like the Ponzinibbio matchup better.

A win for “Gente Boa” over a former world champion could be what he needs to break into title contention himself. But it will have to be rather convincing, as the 170-pound title race is always jammed.
