The UFC is planning to book the grudge match between Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington for 2021.
Colby Covington went on record last week to give an update on the planned grudge match between him and Jorge Masvidal. “Chaos” revealed that the fight will likely fall through because his former best friend is concerned about the stylistic matchup.
Last time I talked to him and Dana, they just said they gotta get Jorge on board and they gotta get him to sign. They said it was gonna be a tough task because he doesn’t want to fight me, plain and simple. He pretty much told them plain and simple that he doesn’t like the style matchup.
But in a recent interview with The Schmo, Dana White contradicted Covington’s statement. According to the UFC president, the bout is in their pipeline for the coming year.
“I don’t think Masvidal said I don’t like that fight stylistically,” White said (transcript by MMA Junkie). “We’re working on that fight. It’s the fight we want, too, and hopefully, we’ll get that done this year, too.
“We got nothing but big fights all this year so hopefully, we can get a couple of these key ones buttoned up and done and start looking forward to them.”
Masvidal, the reigning “BMF” champion, last fought at UFC 251 in July when he stepped in on short notice to challenge Kamaru Usman’s welterweight title. He lost by unanimous decision.
Covington, meanwhile, avenged his December 2019 loss to Usman by scoring a TKO win over former champion Tyron Woodley in September.
