Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier, was expected to make his next title defense against former 265-pound champion, Brock Lesnar, just as soon as the pro wrestling import was finished with his WrestleMania duties.
Or not.
UFC President Dana White claims the much-anticipated “shit show” has instead put on the back burner after Lesnar failed to make contact, which seems a bit bizarre when you consider how many hoops he’s been jumping through since January.
“That fight isn’t even in the works,” White said at today’s UFC Seasonal press conference (watch the replay here). “That fight might not even happen first. We haven’t even talked to Brock. We don’t have a date for him right now. The first fight might be Stipe. When Brock Lesnar’s ready, he’ll call me.”
Cormier captured the heavyweight title — while still holding the 205-pound strap — by scoring a first-round knockout win over Stipe Miocic at the UFC 226 pay-per-view (PPV) event last July, which also featured the return of Lesnar.
Both “DC” and White have turned a deaf ear to cries for an immediate rematch. Not only was Miocic finished with relative ease, the headlining bout failed to make any money. With retirement on the horizon, the 40 year-old Cormier was hoping to cash in that Lesnar retirement fund.
All we can do now is wait.
