I’ve got bad news for the dumbass who just postponed his wedding to make room Conor McGregor’s return to mixed martial arts (MMA): No opponent has been named and there’s no guarantee a fight will be happening on Jan. 18, despite this claim by “Notorious” earlier today in Moscow.
That’s according to UFC President Dana White.
“Yes, we are targeting that date for Conor’s return but no deals are even close to being signed,” White told ESPN, which later brought word that Khabib Nurmagomedov is unlikely to defend his lightweight title until March 2020.
Tony Ferguson remains the leading candidate.
McGregor has not competed since getting submitted by “The Eagle” at UFC 229 back in October 2018. Some of the names being bandied about for his eventual return are Donald Cerrone and Justin Gaethje, though “Notorious” told the press he also wants a crack at the winner of Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz, who collide at UFC 244.
Expect much more on this developing story in the coming weeks.
