Dana White says there’s little to chance we’ll see Conor McGregor vs. Jorge Masvidal anytime soon.
Fans have suggested Jorge Masvidal take on Conor McGregor in a rebound fight following ‘Gamebred’s’ unanimous decision loss to reigning welterweight champion Kamaru Usman at UFC 251, but there’s just one problem with that: ‘The Notorious’ is retired.
“Conor McGregor’s retired,” White said when asked about the McGregor-Masvidal matchup in a recent interview with Yahoo’s! Kevin Iole (h/t Low Kick MMA).
McGregor, the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion, has retired two times already but the Irishman claims he’s serious this time.
Despite being retired, however, McGregor is still in the United States Anti-Doping Agency’s drug testing pool and is still ranked in the top-ten UFC pound-for-pound rankings as well as being ranked #4 in the UFC lightweight rankings.
“Probably,” White said when asked if McGregor is still in USADA’s drug testing pool. “But people have retired and stayed in the testing pool. It has happened before. And then they get tired of it and bail out of it.”
Despite shooting down the McGregor-Masvidal matchup, White believes McGregor will probably make a comeback in 2021. The former champ-champ last fought at UFC 246, where he disposed of Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone via first-round TKO.
“As of right now he’s retired. I wouldn’t be surprised if he came out and wanted to fight somebody next year after all these different fights play out.”
