Becoming a journeyman is usually a bad thing for your fight career, but in Darren Elkins’ case, it’s where it’s at.
Elkins maintains another job as a steamfitter – a tradesman who works on piping systems – in addition to fighting.
Recently, he graduated from apprentice to journeyman in that job, and that means he doesn’t always need to show up to work. As long as he keeps paying his union dues, he can take off eight weeks for a fight camp.
