A long-awaited showdown between former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley, and ex-interim champ, Colby Covington, is in the works to go down on Sept. 19, 2020.
That’s according to MMA Fighting, who got further confirmation of those plans after “The Chosen One” posted on his Instagram account about the pending match up.
“So, Sept. 19, you guys this is the first time I have said it right here. Sept. 19, me and Colby Covington headlining a UFC card, APEX, get it in. You heard it here first. Go and tell everybody. I’ve been trying to fight this dude for two years. Now it’s time. I’m motivated, I feel good,” said Woodley.
A fight between the two talented 170 pounders has been on the docket for some time now, but injuries, contract disputes or other has always gotten in the way of finally being able to see them settle their beef inside the cage.
But now it seems that contracts have actually been signed, sealed and the fight will soon be delivered according to Woodley, who says the fight will go down inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Woodley is in need of a win in the worst way after dropping back-to-back bouts to current division king, Kamaru Usman, and then current No. 1 contender, Gilbert Burns. And while the promotion has yet to officially announce the fight, it seems Leon Edwards has been left out in the cold once again.
Colby, meanwhile, hasn’t competed since losing to Usman at UFC 245 last December via knockout. That was his first loss in four years and just the second in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career overall.
Interestingly enough, Woodley mentioned that his fight against Covignton would be the headlining act, however, Sept. 19 is also the date of UFC 253, which is also tentatively set to go down in Las Vegas. So unless the promotion is planning to move an event round, it seems “The Chosen One” vs “Chaos” will be co-headliner to the Israel Adesanya and Paulo Costa Middleweight title fight.
While all of those details are sure-to-be ironed out in due time, for now it’s just nice to know that this much-desired fight will finally take place.
