Well, the WWE gave you the main event result you were expecting, even if you didn’t want to see it. Roman Reigns went over and is the new WWE heavyweight champion. No run-ins (other than Stephanie McMahon), no real screwjobs – Reigns pinned HHH clean in the ring, much to the crowd’s dismay. They tore Reigns apart thought the whole match, and totally hated the finish.
But while the main event was a bit lame, the rest of the card blew away all expectations. Shane McMahon is a crazy person, the women’s championship match was incredibly well done, and Dean Ambrose is the man. Check out the full results below.
Roman Reigns defeated Triple H by pinfall – Trips had his typical weird entrance, along with a dominatrix-like Stephanie McMahon. Reigns got booed out of the building. They worked a pretty solid match, but it didn’t come across as very special. Reigns speared Triple H through a ringside barricade. Stephanie interfered later on and she got speared too. Hunter tried to use the sledgehammer but another spear put him away. Reigns won the title clean as a sheet and the crowd wasn’t buying it all.
The Rock defeated Erick Rowan by pinfall, John Cena returns – Dwayne Johnson came out to announce the record-breaking attendance, and the Wyatts came out to berate him. This led to Rowan meeting The Rock, and he was quickly Rock Bottomed and counted out. The Wyatts attacked Rock, and John Cena made his triumphant return to save him.
Baron Corbin wins the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal – This was supposed to be on the undercard, but ended up in this prime time spot. Special guests included Diamond Dallas Page, Tatanka, Shaquille O’Neal (seriously), and the aforementioned Corbin, making his WWE debut. It came down to Corbin and Kane, and the NXT vet made a big splash with the battle royal win.
The Undertaker defeated Shane McMahon by pinfall – This was a Hell in a Cell match. Shane had nothing for Taker – he just got destroyed at every turn. Shane tried to submit him from the bottom but couldn’t get it. Then the crazy spots started – a chokeslam on the steps (Shane kicked out), Shane DDT’d Taker on the steps (obvious kickout), a garbage can coast-to-coast by Shane just like the old days, and so much more. They eventually ended up outside the cell, and Shane dove off the top of it. Seriously. The man is crazy. He missed too – Undertaker moved and he crashed through the table. He even got up and asked for more, but Taker quickly tombstoned him and finished it. Absolutely crazy match. Shane got stretchered out.
Charlotte wins the women’s championship by pinfall – This was a triple threat match with Charlotte, Sasha Banks, and Becky Lynch. There’s a new belt, and they’re dropping the diva stuff. Sasha came out with Snoop Dogg, and she’s got Eddie Guerrero gear on. Awesome. Charlotte has a classic Ric Flair robe on, and her dad’s there of course. This was a great match, with a ton of high spots from Charlotte and Sasha, and Becky beat up Ric Flair which is always great. Sasha looked to have it won, but Charlotte made a broken Becky tap to a Figure 8 while The Nature Boy held Sasha on the outside. Excellent work by all three ladies.
Brock Lesnar defeated Dean Ambrose by pinfall -Lesnar hit 13 suplexes in the match. 13. Lots of kendo stick usage in this street fight. After taking a hellacious beating, Ambrose came back with a fire extinguisher and a chair, even hitting a top-rope chair drop on the former UFC heavyweight champion. After a ton of chairs were thrown in the ring, Lesnar hit a brutal suplex on Ambrose on the pile of chairs to get the win. That was a crazy, crazy match.
League of Nations defeated The New Day by pinfall – This was puzzling booking at first, but sort of made sense afterwards. It was booked as a handicap match, but Barrett was just at ringside so it was actually a six-man match. Big E. finally got the hot tag and destroyed everyone, but everyone ended up in the ring soon after and Sheamus finished Woods with a Brogue Kick. After the match, Steve Austin, Mick Foley, and Shawn Michaels came out and brawled with LON and even danced with New Day, which was hilarious. And of course, Stone Cold then hit the stunner on Woods.
Chris Jericho defeated AJ Styles by pinfall – The two vets worked another very good match – technical, lots of reversals and some near falls. Jericho actually tried to use a Styles Clash, but ended up getting caught with one himself. He kicked out, which was a major surprise to me. Jericho hit a sweet counter-Codebreaker to get the W, which was another major surprise to me.
Zack Ryder wins Intercontinental title in eight-man Ladder Match – The stars of this match were, predictably, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. Lots of crazy spots, of course. My favorite was a KO frog splash onto Sami on a ladder. Everyone else (Sin Cara, Stardust, The Miz, Zack Ryder, Dolph Ziggler) hit some signature spots. It came down to Miz looking like he was going to win, but Ryder came out of nowhere to knock him off the ladder and claim the belt. The crowd loved it.
Pre-show
The Usos defeated the Dudleys by pinfall – This was kind of odd. It featured both teams doing their signature spots, but the finish was very random. The Dudleys immediately jumped them after they lost and set up the WASSUP table spot, but it got reversed.
Team Total Divas defeated Team BAD and Blonde – This went pretty much as expected – not a great match. Paige did much of the work getting beaten up by the heels. Brie Bella used a few signature Daniel Bryan spots, including finishing the match with a Yes Lock to make Naomi tap.
Kalisto defeated Ryback by pinfall to retain the US Title – This was your typical big vs. little guy match, but Kalisto made it pretty entertaining. Ryback hit a few power spots, but ended up running into a turnbuckle that he exposed, allowing Kalisto to his his finisher and retain the belt.
