World Series of Fighting (WSOF) 34: “Gaethje vs. Zeferino” goes down Dec. 31, 2016 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. In the meantime, WSOF has a lot of down time to make some news, which they’ve done today by signing an Olympic gold medalist.
No, not THAT Olympic gold medalist.
Judo Olympian and two-time gold medalist Kayla Harrison has signed with WSOF. She’ll start her career by providing analysis at WSOF 34 and fulfilling the “brand ambassador” role of getting favorable attention directed WSOF’s way.
There’s no date set for her to make a Decagon debut, nor at the present time even any other woman in her presumed weight class (she’s suggested featherweight) in WSOF.
“I’ve been boxing and doing jiu-jitsu and all that, and the biggest thing for me, really, is that I miss competing,” she told MMA Junkie. “I miss fighting on the highest stages of the world, and the World Series of Fighting really gave me a great opportunity.”
The bosses sound impressed.
“For me, personally, having been president of Universal Sports and being very involved in the Olympic movement with NBC, I’m personally just very excited to have Kayla join our team,” said WSOF CEO Carlos Silva. “If you haven’t ever held a gold medal or seen a gold medal, it’s special, and the people that get them are special. We’re just excited to have her join the team.”
