Zahabi: Georges St-Pierre should fight either Conor McGregor or Michael Bisping

Tristar Gym head coach Firas Zahabi states his reasons why Georges St-Pierre should fight either Conor McGregor or Michael Bisping.

After four years on the shelf, Georges St-Pierre was finally slated for his UFC return against Michael Bisping in a middleweight title fight. But after only two months since it was announced, the UFC has reportedly decided to scrap the matchup and have Bisping face Yoel Romero, instead.

St-Pierre, now 35, is once again left without an opponent, and his immediate fighting future is in limbo. But if it were up to Tristar Gym head coach Firas Zahabi, the former long-time welterweight champion should only be facing high-profile opponents.

“I think he should fight Conor McGregor or Michael Bisping, and I’ll tell you why: Michael Bisping will give him a two-title championship, and if he fights McGregor, it’ll be the greatest fight in UFC history,” Zahabi told MMAJunkie. “Other than that, I don’t know if there’s anything else that’s super-interesting.”

“I don’t wanna speak for Georges – maybe Georges is thinking of other fights – but the two fights I’m interested in would be a Bisping fight or a McGregor fight. I don’t see why that can’t happen. Maybe it’s a question of time, but it should happen.”

A little over a week ago, UFC president Dana White pulled the plug on the Bisping-St-Pierre fight, mainly because he was not willing to wait for GSP, who will only be able to return until “after October.”

Zahabi clarified that St-Pierre would still need to go through USADA testing, which will only make him available to fight in the fall. But as for the Bisping fight, Zahabi says it should push through, especially since it will be benefiting both fighters.

“Bisping has been fighting for a long time; he deserves a big money fight. I think fighting Georges would make him the most money he’s ever made in his career,” Zahabi said. “I think he deserves that. I think he’s a big name. I think he’s champion – he should make that money.”

“And what do the fans want to see? I think Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre is the No. 1 fight they want to see. So why aren’t we giving it to them? I don’t know.”

Bisping vs. St-Pierre was originally targeted for UFC 213 in July.
