The Sunday Junkie: June 6 edition

Call this week’s edition of The Sunday Junkie, our weekly reader-feedback feature, something of a “state of the union” address for MMA fans.

With no major shows on this weekend’s docket, the focus turned to some current hot topics, including Jake Shields’ free-agent status, UFC 115’s main event, wrestling/lay-and-pray in MMA, and “The Ultimate Fighter 11” coaching.

But this week’s winner, Jason Szewczyk, focused on another popular subject: UFC president Dana White and the state of MMA media.

Medical Beat: Would you pay $1 to support a medical fund for retired UFC fighters?

With the rigors of the sport, many mixed-martial-arts fighters are likely to need medical care when their careers are over and Medicare isn’t yet available.

Those hip, knee, back and shoulder problems are very likely to appear at
ages much younger than we expect to see among the “normal” non-combat
athlete population.

In his latest “Medical Beat,” MMAjunkie.com medical columnist Dr. Johnny Benjamin gives his recommendation on how a simple $1 pay-per-view increase could provide millions in healthcare for the retired fighters who will need it most.

UFC not giving up on Germany

If you think the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s new Canadian office, continued U.S. expansion, and penetration of new international markets may prompt the organization to give up on somewhat-hostile host sites such as Germany, think again.

The UFC ventured to Cologne for UFC 99 in June 2009, and UFC officials again found themselves fighting off the same misconceptions that plagued mixed martial arts in the 1990s.

But UFC president Dana White said all the bad publicity, public backlash, city council’s attempted shutdown of UFC 99, and an eventual ban on minors attending the event won’t force the promotion to back down.
