Chris Curtis has backed his training partner Sean Strickland for his upcoming bout against Alex Pereira.

UFC Middleweight Chris Curtis is scheduled to take on Rodolfo Vieira on June 25 at UFC Vegas 57. Curtis will be looking to extend his winning run to three in the UFC after coming out victorious in his first two showings against Phil Hawes, by KO, and over Brendan Allen, by TKO.

He made his first appearance under the banner on Dana White‘s Contender Series in June 2018. ‘The Action Man’ would go on to the PFL for a brief stint that saw him drop three in a row before joining the UFC last November.

Sean Strickland will corner Chris Curtis at UFC Vegas 57

In an exclusive interview with James Lynch for LowKick MMA, Chris Curtis talked about his upcoming fight against Vieira and shared his thoughts on the promotion matching his training partner Sean Strickland up with Alex Pereira.

When asked by the interviewer about who will be in his corner against Vieira, Curtis shared that Strickland will be in attendance just a week before his own outing with Pereira.

“Nate Pettit, Eric Nicksick, and of course, Sean Strickland,” Curtis said. “It’s in Vegas though, he lives in Vegas. He’s not really doing me a huge favour of my shot but he’s also like five minutes from the PI (UFC Performance Institute). Bro, just show up it’s fine.”

Chris Curtis says it’s a risky gamble by the UFC

Talking about the upcoming showdown between Strickland and Pereira, the 34-year-old Ohio native stated that it’s a risky gamble for the UFC. Pereira is the only man to have knocked out Israel Adesanya but that was in another sport. Curtis backed Strickland’s chances of securing a win which would make the potential storyline between Pereira and Adesanya null and void.

“It’s weird. You know what’s happening, the fight they’re trying to make,” he said. “They need Pereira to have a legitimate win, like who has he beaten so far, Bruno Silva, there’s nothing, not Bruno Silva but he’s unranked completely. Then, I don’t know the first guy he fought.

“They’re really trying to get him a meaningful opponent but I think this was probably handled in the weirdest way. I’m guessing they hope that Strickland can’t knock him out because Strickland, you know, not a knockout puncher.

“But people also forget that Strickland’s a jiu-jitsu black belt and ever since the Usman fight, I’m telling you guys this dude has become one of the better wrestlers in the division.

“I think they kinda rolled dice on the wrong stats. We all see what they’re doing I just think it was a bad decision.”

Curtis shared his thoughts on Strickland being the underdog going into the bout.

“He beat Izzy so people are like, ‘oh he beat Izzy’ but once again this isn’t kickboxing. I think people get swept up in the storyline a little bit and it happens, we can see bias or anything else. I think this is a really risky bet on the UFC’s part because if he loses to Sean, what do you do with him?”

Chris Curtis will fight Rodolfo Vieira this June 25 at the UFC Apex, Las Vegas, at UFC on ESPN 38.

UFC light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira thinks Israel Adesanya will do everything he can to avoid a fight with Alex Pereira in the Octagon.

Adesanya, the UFC middleweight champion, will defend his title against Jared Cannonier in the UFC 276 headliner. He’s coming off of recent successful title defenses over Marvin Vettori and Robert Whittaker.

The UFC signed a former foe of Adesanya’s in Pereira, who joined the promotion after multiple titles in kickboxing. He is the only fighter to knock out Adesanya in any discipline and holds two wins against him in the kickboxing ring.

During his UFC 275 pre-fight media day, Teixeira spoke about Pereira’s future in the UFC and why he feels a potential UFC fight between him and Adesanya is unlikely.

“I mean you think about it, Adesanya fought him with kickboxing gloves, and he knew how hard he hit. And with these MMA gloves, who knows? I don’t know if he’s gonna take that fight that easily,” Teixeira said of Adesanya.

“I think he’s going to have a conversation with Dana White trying to get away from that fight. When you lose to a guy two times, and he knows how dangerous he is and how hard he hits…look at Adesanya vs. Blachowicz. His best chance to beat Pereira is standup, and he already lost two times. It’s going to be tough for him to fight Alex.”

This isn’t the first time that Teixeira has ripped Adesanya’s chances in a UFC fight with Pereira. Last September, he accused Adesanya of being scared of Pereira and called Pereira his “daddy”.

Pereira will face Sean Strickland at UFC 277 in a potential No. 1 contender fight. A win over Strickland could guarantee a third fight with Adesanya coming to fruition.

Alex Pereira has scored some stunning knockouts during his combat sports career, but the Brazilian middleweight says he doesn’t need to add Sean Strickland to his list of finishes.

During an appearance on the MMA Fighting podcast Trocação Franca, the former GLORY kickboxing champion outlined exactly how he wants to beat Strickland at UFC 276.

“Honestly, I’m not thinking about a knockout. If it’s a fight [that ends] by decision, winning clearly, I’d prefer that. I want to feel [the fight], you know? Just like the [Bruno Santos] fight – three rounds, a war, him trying to take me down and myself defending it. If I get taken down, I’m getting back up and maybe taking him down as well.”

Peireira’s response is a notable departure from the predictions of first-round finishes often offered by fighters ahead of their bouts. That being said, Peireira’s road to the UFC and a full-time career in MMA hasn’t exactly been typical.

Making The Transition

After going 3-1 in MMA while still prioritizing kickboxing, Pereira fully committed to the sport when he joined the UFC in 2021. All of his pre-UFC bouts ended inside the distance, and his UFC debut lasted just over a round when he knocked out Andreas Michailidis with a flying knee.

The 34-year old put in his most complete performance as an MMA fighter in his most recent fight against Bruno Silva. “Poatan” was taken down twice and had to overcome some adversity but still managed to win 30-27 scorecards from all three judges for a unanimous decision win.

Any time in the cage is valuable at this point in his MMA career, and Pereira likes how his skills match up with Strickland.

“He’s a dangerous guy, very tough,” Pereira said. “But, with my fighting style, I think it’s a great fight for me. He comes forward willing to engage, you know? He wants to win. That motivates me a lot. I think my technique could be better than his.”

Strickland will look to extend his current six-fight winning streak with a win over the Brazilian, but much of the narrative heading into UFC 276 will revolve around Pereira and UFC Middleweight Champion Israel Adesanya.

Pereira holds two wins over Adesanya from their time competing as kickboxers in GLORY. “The Last Stylebender” is expected to defend his middleweight title against Jared Cannonier in the main event at UFC 276, and the winner of Strickland vs. Pereira could be next in line for a shot at the middleweight belt.

Former GLORY middleweight kickboxing champion Jason Wilnis has transitioned into the sport of mixed martial arts after a decorated career as a striker. In his time competing in the sport, Wilnis crossed paths with current UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya and beat him in the contest.

Wilnis followed this up with another significant win over Alex Pereira, widely known to be the only man to have knocked out ‘Stylebender’ in a fight. Pereira holds a win over the 31-year-old but has fallen to him on two occasions.

Jason Wilnis sees himself fighting Israel Adesanya

Ahead of his third outing inside the octagon at KSW 70, Jason Wilnis talked about the possibility of facing Adesanya and Pereira now that they all compete in MMA.

“Everybody can say what they want,” Wilnis said. “I’m not a big talker, but I have two wins over Pereira, he has one win over me. I have one win over Adesanya. I even have a win over Joe Schilling, [and] he has one win over me.

“I can compare with these guys, and even in MMA, I can do a lot more than I do in kickboxing. So we’re working on it, and I can’t wait to rematch these guys again and show them my skills. My skill level in MMA.” (h/t MMA Fighting)

Wilnis goes into the bout with two wins on his fresh record that includes one knockout. He’ll be looking to extend his win tally to three and hand fellow undefeated prospect Rados?aw Paczuski the first loss of his career.

While he acknowledged that it may be in the distant future as of now, Wilnis does see himself crossing paths with both of his former opponents.

“We have a lot of kickboxing experience,” Wilnis said. “Of course, it helps us in the cage time. It helps because we start standing up. We are kickboxing, so we know what stand-up is like.

“We have our different paths, but maybe we can see each other in the UFC later. I think that’s the plan for me, for Alex Pereira also. He wants to fight Adesanya. I also want to fight one of them. Different paths but somewhere the same goal.”

Pereira has discussed a potential third fight with Israel Adesanya in the UFC after beating him twice in kickboxing. However, Pereira thinks he’s ready for a fight with Cannonier next following Cannonier’s knockout over Derek Brunson at UFC 271.

During his UFC Vegas 50 post-fight press conference, Pereira explained his reasoning behind calling out Cannonier so early into his UFC career.

“I had talked about Jared Cannonier because he’s a guy that is next for a title shot,” Pereira said. “Some people have already talked about me and Adesanya, so why not Cannonier? I don’t think I’m talking too much calling out Cannonier.

“I had two great fights and I was able to showcase my skills. I didn’t even show everything that I go through my daily basis training with Glover Teixeira’s gym. I’m improving and evolving every day. Before his win over Silva, Pereira passed his first UFC test with flying colors against Andreas Michailidis at UFC 268. He earned a violent flying knee knockout that put the rest of the division on notice.

Cannonier is expected to face Adesanya for the next middleweight title shot later this year. If he were to lose, a fight against Pereira may happen down the line.

Alex Pereira is just two fights into his UFC career but the Brazilian kickboxing legend says he is ready to seriously step up his level of competition by facing Jared Cannonier next.

‘The Killa Gorilla’ seemed to cement his spot as the number one contender at middleweight by beating Derek Bruson at UFC 271 in February.

Israel Adesanya successfully defended his 185lb strap on the same card with a unanimous decision win over Robert Whittaker.

‘Stylebender’ has since asserted that Cannonier is next in line and suggested they could face off in the summer months of 2022.

After beating Bruno Silva by unanimous decision at UFC Vegas 50 on Saturday the unraked Pereira is hoping he can cut the line and get a crack at Cannonier.

“I had talked about Jared Cannonier because he’s a guy that is next for a title shot,” Pereira told reporters at the UFC Fight Night 203 post-fight press conference. “Some people have already talked about me and Adesanya, so why not Cannonier? I don’t think I’m talking too much calling out Cannonier.”
