Francisco Trinaldo was not happy at all with his loss to Alexander Hernandez at UFC San Antonio this past weekend.

The two lightweights collided on the main card of UFC San Antonio in a fight that was rather uneventful. Still, many felt that Trinaldo had done enough to win the decision. In fact, 11 of the 13 media scorecards on MMA Decisions had the Brazilian winning the fight.

However, the three judges scoring the fight unfortunately saw it differently as Hernandez emerged victorious with scorecards of 30-27, 29-28 and 30-27. But for Trinaldo, Hernandez did not win a single round:

“I’m still a bit upset,” Trinaldo told MMA Fighting. “They shamelessly took the win away from me. I thought I was winning… I could have done more, trying to knock him out, but it’s tough. It’s tough to fight here. If they want to build this kid they have to start giving him easy fights, otherwise he won’t get anywhere. He doesn’t belong here. Everybody knows he won’t get anywhere.

“He didn’t win one round. He didn’t land one strike that hurt me. Every strike I landed, he would open his eyes wide open. Just watch the fight. I know it’s not UFC’s fault, but these judges have to judge marbles tournaments instead. They suck. They took my win away and I’m the only one who was really harmed.”

“Massaranduba” knows the UFC doesn’t control the judges, but if Hernandez gets the win, he wants his win bonus at the very least:

“If they want to put a win on his record, go for it, but I want my win bonus. I deserve it,” Trinaldo explained. “I went there to put a beating on him and he just ran. Everybody saw I won. UFC employees were shocked, they don’t know how they gave that kid the win. The least they can do is give me my win bonus.”

Trinaldo concluded with some strong words for Hernandez:

“I train hard every single say, focused, to come here and lose like that,” Trinaldo added. “This guy came here all cocky, feeling like a badass… I always say fighters fear no one so don’t come here mean mugging. This kid acts all cocky, but when the cage closes he’s a p*ssy. They want to turn this p*ssy into a man.”

Alexander Hernandez vs. Francisco Trinaldo in a lightweight bout continues the main card of the UFC San Antonio event:

Round 1: Both fighters came out and were pressing the pace but neither fighter threw any strikes but rather a feeling out process. Hernandez was starting to throw more kicks as the round comes near the end. Hernandez catches a kick to the cup and we have a break in the action. He’s good to go though. Trinaldo caught him with a right hook as Hernandez was going for a kick. Trinaldo caught him with a knee strike to the gut to end the round.

Round 2: Both men were moving around quite well and staying light on their feet but not aggressive as they were both looking to counter strike. Hernandez clinched with him and was quickly outclassed by Trinaldo’s strength. Hernandez had a good sized bruise on his left cheek. Hernandez lands a hard left body kick right before the horn.

Round 3: Trinaldo slipped on a kick and Hernandez tried to take advantage but couldn’t. Trinaldo landed a nice spinning back kick. With two minutes to go, the fans were chanting various things. To their credit, the fighters stepped up the pace with their striking but nothing was landing.

Alexander Hernandez Not Underestimating Francisco Trinaldo Following Donald Cerrone Loss

If there is one thing Alexander Hernandez won’t do this weekend, it’s underestimate the age of Francisco Trinaldo. If there is one thing Alexander Hernandez won’t do this weekend, it’s underestimate the age of Francisco Trinaldo.

Hernandez takes on Trinaldo at UFC San Antonio this weekend in what will be his first outing since a knockout defeat to Donald Cerrone earlier in January. “The Great” looked down on Cerrone heading into the fight, going as far as telling him he would send his “geriatric ass yee-hawing back to the stables.”

In the end, it backfired as the 36-year-old Cerrone was able to get a second-round stoppage win over the 26-year-old in what was another case of trash talking gone wrong.

And Hernandez believes the only way he was going to lose that night was against the experience of Cerrone:

“If I was going to lose any way it was from experience,” Hernandez told MMA Junkie. “I’m the stronger, faster and I honestly believe the more technical fighter all around, but it was a lack of composure that was my detriment, my downfall. If there’s anything that guy’s garnered over the last few years it’s tremendous mental composure.

“He presented a true test and I underestimated the most prevalent thing I should’ve been looking out for it. It was an experience point for me and a huge landmark in my fighting career.”

Hernandez Not Underestimating Trinaldo

Now back after six months, Hernandez takes on another veteran in the 40-year-old Trinaldo who presents a tough task for anyone in the division. Hernandez, for one, plans on respecting his experience:

“He’s a grimy guy,” Hernandez said. “I don’t think he’s particularly pretty anywhere, but I think he’s pretty solid all around. I think he’s a pretty tough, gritty experienced. I’m not going to underestimate the age or nothing like that, I’m going to respect the fact he’s an experienced veteran.”

Hernandez is hoping a win on Saturday puts him back on track for his goal of becoming a UFC champion — something he hopes to achieve in 2021:

“The goal is still to have the belt in 2021,” Hernandez added. “I win this fight, I get two ranked opponents and I’m looking at a title shot. Especially with the way I fight and carry myself. I don’t see why we can’t stay on track.”

Do you think Hernandez will get back to winning ways this weekend?

The UFC San Antonio card continues to shape up as a lightweight bout between Alexander Hernandez and Francisco Trinaldo has now been added to the event.

The card takes place July 20 at the AT&T Center and despite having a number of fights initially announced for the card, the UFC was struggling with a main event. There were plans for a women’s flyweight title fight before UFC middleweight Jared Cannonier recently revealed there were plans for him to headline the card to no avail.

In the end, a pivotal welterweight headliner between Rafael dos Anjos and Leon Edwards was booked. And now, the UFC has announced Hernandez will be facing Trinaldo on the card as well.

Hernandez, who has fought in Texas for most of his professional career, will be returning to action for the first time since his TKO loss to Donald Cerrone in January. He was previously unbeaten in eight fights leading up to that setback.

As for Trinaldo, the Brazilian has alternated between wins and losses, but most recently defeated Evan Dunham via TKO back in September. With Hernandez ranked No. 13 in the lightweight rankings, a win could see Trinaldo return to the top 15.

Here is how the card looks as of now:

  • Rafael dos Anjos vs. Leon Edwards
  • Alexander Hernandez vs. Franciso Trinaldo
  • Aleksei Oleinik vs. Walt Harris
  • Andrei Arlovski vs. Ben Rothwell
  • James Vick vs. Dan Hooker
  • Greg Hardy vs. Juan Adams
  • Raquel Pennington vs. Irene Aldana
  • Sam Alvey vs. Klidson Abreu
  • Alex Caceres vs. Steven Peterson
  • Domingo Pilarte vs. Felipe Colares
  • Mario Bautista vs. Jin Soo Son
  • Ray Borg vs. Gabriel Silva
  • Roxanne Modafferi vs. Liz Carmouche
