Decorated former UFC champion Frank Mir lost a bloody battle to Javy Ayala (highlights here) at last night’s (Fri., December 14, 2018) Bellator 212 from the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Now, Mir reveals the injury he suffered in the bout.

Mir was able to find some success in the opening round. But he was cut open badly in the second round. It lead to his demise as a result. Mir ended up tapping out due to strikes, his first submission loss of his lengthy MMA career.

Speculation was that Mir must have been seriously injured to tap out to strikes. That was revealed to be the case. Mir’s “Phonebooth Fight Podcast” co-host Richard Hunter revealed this morning (via BJPenn.com) that Mir had suffered an alveolar fracture:

“I just talked to @thefrankmir & he told me he has an alveolar ridge fracture, which caused the tap. Frank was without his mouthpiece for about a minute & 1/2 of the 2nd round & that’s where the injury occurred.”

Extreme Pain

Hunter then detailed just how gruesome Mir’s injury was. He fought through incredible pain but could just not continue:

“Also told me he thought it was just his teeth so he was trying to pull them out so he could continue but then the pain went through the roof. This is a rough sport, folks.”

Ouch. Indeed it is a rough sport, and Mir can be dubbed nothing but a warrior for his overall body of work in mixed martial arts. He’s one of the greatest heavyweights of all-time. The fact that had not tapped until this point is a testament to that fact.

His career may be nearing its end with four consecutive losses. Mir appears more than ready to go out on his shield. Should he based on the brutal injury he suffered last night?

Michael Chandler met Brent Primus in the main event of Bellator 212 on Friday (Dec. 14, 2018) night. “Iron” Mike did not disappoint.

Also known as “USO’s Salute to the Troops”, Bellator 212 at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, Hawaii was headlined by the anticipated lightweight title rematch between Chandler and Primus.

The rematch was 18 months in the making but it lived up to the wait.

Chandler wasted little time stalking Primus and clipped the champion with a big left hand early in the first. The champ regained his composure on the ground and nearly finished the fight in the second round via rear naked choke.

The third and fourth round would see Chandler batter the champion for the majority of the frames.

The fifth and final round would see the champion scramble for a submission as he is most likely going to lose a decision. However, Chandler’s top game was much too dominate for Primus.

Chandler beats Primus and becomes the only three-time champion in Bellator history.

Michael Chandler: Beating Me Is ‘Highlight Of Brent Primus’ Life’

Make no mistake about it, it’s personal between lightweight champion Brent Primus and Michael Chandler. Make no mistake about it, it’s personal between lightweight champion Brent Primus and Michael Chandler.

Heading into their rematch on Friday (Dec. 14, 2018) night both men are calling it as they see it. That is, neither guy likes the other and aren’t afraid to admit it.

“The dynamics are different than a lot of fights,” Chandler revealed at open workouts via MMAjunkie. “A lot of times, I have a ton of respect for the guys who I step in the cage with, who are full-time fighters who pour themselves into the sport. They fight numerous times a year, they make it their life, their dream, their goal, their task to be a professional fighter.

“That’s not necessarily the case here in this fight. But, at the end of the day, I’ve prepared for him like he’s the No. 1 lightweight in the world. I’ve prepared for him like he’s my toughest test to date. I feel the best that I ever have been, so I’m excited to go out there, put all the grudge match stuff behind, put all the personal stuff behind.”

Their rivalry has been well-documented. The former champion has called out Primus on multiple occasions, but the champ has been on an extended layoff. Still, Chandler doesnt buy what Primus is selling and he wants to make him pay for making him wait 18 months for his rematch.

“I’ve stayed active,” Chandler said. “He’s done nothing but rust up there in Oregon teaching kids jiu-jitsu somewhere. So I’m ready to step back in there and continue this quest.”

Another thing that has rubbed Chandler the wrong way is the way it seems Primus is flanting the belt in his face.

“That’s the highlight of his life,” Chandler said. “It’s good. That’s the thing, man. He’s got the belt. Let him enjoy it. To me, you’re not going to see me with the belt that much. It’s for the kids, it’s for the camera, it’s for that kind of stuff, that’s cool. For me, this is a constant quest of outperforming my previous self. It’s not about the belt, it’s not about the money, it’s not about the lights, it’s not about the cameras.

“I’ve been in this sport a long time, and I know exactly what I’m fighting for. It will be nice to win that belt, but it’s just 12 pounds of gold and leather. It’s going to go right up on my mantle and collect dust, just like the other four of five I have.”

“Bellator and USO Present: Salute the Troops” takes place this evening (Fri., December 14, 2018) at Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu.

Brent Primus’ rematch with Michael Chandler is personal.

Primus defeated Chandler for the Bellator lightweight championship back in June of 2017. He picked up the first-round TKO win due to a leg injury Chandler sustained during the fight. Chandler has remained adamant that the only reason Primus defeated him was because of his injury. The pair will get to see whether or not that is true tomorrow (Fri., December 14, 2018) at Bellator 212.

Chandler will finally get his rematch Primus and an opportunity to reclaim the Bellator lightweight title. However, given Chandler’s recent comments, this fight is a very personal one for Primus (via MMAjunkie):

“All the stuff he’s been talking, all the lying, all the controversy, it is (personal), man,” Primus said. “I want to get in there and prove that it wasn’t a mistake – and he knows that it wasn’t, too – so I’m excited.

“Literally, I was so scared that I heard that he might be going to another organization because his contract was up, and I was literally praying that he stays with Bellator, and I’m just really excited that he’s staying. We can get in there and get it done.”

Primus is currently undefeated in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. However, he hasn’t competed since he defeated Chandler back in 2017. A string of injuries has kept him sidelined from action. As for Chandler, he has back-to-back wins following his loss to Primus, his latest in April.

Scott Coker boasts about how he is the one to bring back MMA to the Hawaiian Islands for a pair of events before the UFC can do so. The President of Bellator MMA, which is owned by Viacom, is proud of their shows this weekend.

First up is Bellator 212, which is being hyped as the “Bellator and USO Present: Salute the Troops.” This event goes down on Friday (December 14, 2018) at the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii. Brent Primus vs. Michael Chandler in a lightweight title bout will serve as the headliner.

The following night, Bellator 213, takes place at the same venue. Ilima-Lei MacFarlane vs. Valerie Letourneau for the Bellator women’s flyweight title will headline this show.

Importance

While doing a recent interview to promote the shows, Coker made it known that he hopes this can be an annual affair.

“It’s something that I’d like to come here once a year and do this dual event,” Coker told MMAjunkie. “Saturday night is open to the general public, Friday night is free for the troops. It’s a give-back to the military for all that they do for us.”

Although Coker won’t try to compare themselves to UFC, he does take pride in the fact that they held a show before the UFC did in the state. He also made it known that it was the UFC’s call and their UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway wasn’t too happy about it.

“I’m not going to compare us to other organizations, but we are here first. It does feel good regardless of any other organization,” Coker said. “Everybody has choices to make. (The UFC) had choices of whether they want to come do it or not. They decided not to do it, and we did it. I don’t think Max (Holloway) is too happy. But you can come watch our fights Saturday night.”
