Ben Askren had a legitimate choke secured on former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler, according to Rener and Ryron Gracie. They gave their foregone conclusion on this welterweight bout during a video on their “Gracie Breakdown” channel.

“Was it an early stoppage?” Rener asked his brother. “Yes,” Ryron responded. “Did that affect the outcome?” Rener followed up. “No,” added by Ryron.

Askren beat Lawler at the UFC 235 pay-per-view event from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. In round one, Askren locked in a bulldog choke and the referee steps in as he thinks he had Lawler out but Lawler claims to be awake and was. It was controversial to say the least.

The Gracie brothers would continue by stating that the fighters are told by the referee before fights that when they check on a fighter who is in a submission to squeeze their hand.

“It was a legit choke,” Rener stated (H/T to Bloody Elbow) “If the fight was not stopped, Robbie would go unconscious from this situation, that is our belief.” Well, what about the fact Lawler had his chin tucked? “The chin tuck debate, ‘because the chin is tucked it’s just pain, it’s not a blood choke.’ That’s not true either. Ask Conor, ask Khabib…”

Ben Askren gets trolled by the UFC’s official website through the power of social media. The former ONE welterweight champion is slated to meet former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler in a bout at the upcoming UFC 235 pay-per-view event.

This fight was originally slated to take place at UFC 233 but once the event was cancelled the promotion moved the bout. This marks a big bout for Askren as it will be his promotional debut. It’s also one of the biggest matches that he’s been part of in recent memory.

However, that hasn’t stopped the UFC from having fun with him. In fact, their official website has yet to add his profile picture and is just a figure. At first, they didn’t even have it look like him. However, once Askren pointed this out, the UFC made some slight changes by adding some hair.

The UFC 235 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, March 2, 2019 in at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET and the UFC’s streaming service, Fight Pass.

Ben Askren strongly believes that the UFC and its President Dana White hopes that he suffers a defeat by the hands of Robbie Lawler. According to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, the UFC is close to booking Askren vs. Lawler at the upcoming UFC 233 pay-per-view event.

According to the former ONE and Bellator welterweight champion, he thinks that this fight selection was no accident. Instead, he thinks the Las Vegas-based promotion handpicked the former UFC welterweight champion to fight him in his promotional debut.

“He’s probably the guy in the top five with the best opportunity to beat me,” Askren told ESPN (H/T to MMaNews). “He has pretty good wrestling and he’s obviously a heavy striker. If you want someone to beat me, that’s probably the best you’ll find.”

To Askren, it’s an obvious move as they don’t want him to win under the UFC banner. However, make no mistake about it, he doesn’t take any offense to it.

“It’s obvious. They don’t want me to win. (Dana White) will deny it, but he should just come out and say, ‘I don’t like Ben Askren. I think he’s a jackass, and I want to see him get beat up.’ That’d be cool, and I would take no offense to that whatsoever.”

UFC 233 takes place on January 26, 2019 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California. There’s speculation that a UFC bantamweight title bout is being targeted for this show. That fight would be between the current champion T.J. Dillashaw and current UFC Flyweight champion Henry Cejudo.

The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.
