While he doesn’t have a particular name in mind, UFC veteran Dan Hooker expects his next fight to come in familiar circumstances.

When he does return to the Octagon, Hooker will be hoping to rebound form the worst run of form in his career to date. Having fallen to defeats against Dustin Poirier, Michael Chandler, and Islam Makhachev in the past couple of years, “The Hangman” decided to return to featherweight this year.

His search for the Hooker of old brought the New Zealander to Arnold Allen’s doorstep, with the pair colliding in the co-main event of UFC London in March. Having decided it was a night to throw down, Hooker traded leather with “Almighty” from the start.

Marking his fourth loss in five bouts, Hooker was finished inside the opening round for the second consecutive appearance. Being a fan of the brawler is not an easy ride, and the next loop on it will seemingly see him return to 155 pounds.

But despite his recent form, Hooker isn’t planning massive changes to his approach.

While he’s open to following the kind of technical and strategic gameplan that secured him victory over Nasrat Haqparast at UFC 266, the New Zealander doesn’t expect to adjust his willingness to fight anyone and everyone.

Losing skid or not, the motto remains ‘bring one, bring them all’.

Being Ducked? Call “The Hangman”

During a recent appearance on Submission Radio, Hooker discussed his recent woes and his next steps inside the cage.

While he could confirm that there won’t be a sophomore appearances for his second stint at featherweight, Hooker couldn’t provide any potential names for his next lightweight outing.

However, the 32-year-old is expecting a similar sort of scenario that brought him to the doors of the debuting Chandler in January 2021 and rising Dagestani phenom Makhachev on short notice last October.

“It’ll be whoever it’s gonna be. Obviously, I have my inklings, but it’ll be like all those other situations,” said Hooker. “You run back and you look at who I’ve fought, you just look at the division and you ask yourself, ‘Who don’t people wanna fight?’ And that’s who I’ll probably end up fighting. Who’s getting turned down left, right, and center? That’s who I’ll fight next. So you can take a look at the division, ask yourself, ‘Who doesn’t anyone wanna fight?’ That’s the guy.

“That’s why I’m not that fussed about—I can get back in the mix. I can get back in the mix in a heartbeat,” added Hooker. “You can’t count a dog like me out of the game. It’s just not how it works.”

Whoever he shares the cage with next, fans of the entertaining New Zealander will be hoping to see him return to winning ways and make his way back into the mix at 155 pounds.

UFC fighter Dan Hooker isn’t buying the talk of a Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou superfight just yet.

This past weekend, the discussion and hype behind a potential collision between the WBC and The Ring boxing titleholder and the UFC Heavyweight Champion stepped up. Rumors of Ngannou crossing over to the squared circle have been prevalent since the build-up to his latest Octagon appearance at UFC 270 in January.

Soon after the Cameroonian’s victory over Ciryl Gane, and with a contractual dispute with the UFC ongoing, Fury suggested a bout with “The Predator” was likely to take place in Las Vegas early next year.

Following another impressive triumph in the ring on Saturday, in which he knocked out Dillian Whyte in front of over 90,000 fans, “The Gypsy King” stood face-to-face with Ngannou, with both men appearing optimistic about a future scrap.

While some are excited at the prospect of the two behemoths coming together, and expect it to be the next step for both men should Ngannou depart MMA’s premier promotion at the end of the year, not everyone sees it the same.

During his UFC Vegas 52 recap with The AllStar, which came shortly after Fury’s victory, perennial UFC contender Dan “The Hangman” Hooker was surprised to hear co-host John Hyon Ko’s excitement for the potential crossover bout. The New Zealander suggested the interaction and early promotion is “all PR” at this point.

“The what? You wanna see what? You wanna see (Fury vs. Ngannou)? Stop,” said Hooker. “That’s just PR right? That’s just PR right? They’re not serious. They’re not serious, get outta here.

“I wonder what happens when a boxer fights a mixed martial artist?” Hooker added sarcastically. “Like, get outta here man. We have established this. This has been established.”

Hooker went on to cite Fury’s announced retirement, which he believes to be a marketing tool, as evidence that the Englishman can sell anything on paper, including a fight against the UFC’s heavyweight kingpin, who has consistently expressed his desire to throw down in the boxing ring.

Should Dana White and the UFC remain against the idea of allowing their champ to transition to the squared circle for a blockbuster showdown with “The Gypsy King,” it appears Ngannou will have a difficult decision to make.

Although, if his “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get what I want” sentiment is to be believed, perhaps the decision to depart the UFC for fresh opportunities won’t be a hard one to make.

Do you agree with Dan Hooker’s take on Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou?

Former UFC middleweight and light heavyweight title challenger, Chael Sonnen has claimed that Kiwi striker, Dan Hooker is firmly on a shortlist of potential opponents to welcome former two-weight UFC champion, Conor McGregor back to the Octagon.

Dan Hooker, a native of Auckland, New Zealand – is set to return to the lightweight limit after a brief second excursion at featherweight whilst under the banner of the UFC – suffering a first round knockout loss to Arnold Allen in March at a UFC Fight Night London event.

Confirming recently that he is simply unable to make the featherweight limit continually this deep into his professional career, Hooker, who plys his trade largely under the banner of City Kickboxing – is set to return to the lightweight limit for his next outing in the Octagon.

The New Zealander’s most recent outing at 155lbs came in the form of a short-notice UFC 267 clash with Islam Makachev in October on ‘Fight Island’ – suffering a one-sided first frame kimura loss.

Dan Hooker has been shortlisted for a fight with Conor McGregor according to Chael Sonnen

However, despite recent form at lightweight, Sonnen has claimed that the Auckland kickboxer is firmly amongst the names on a shortlist to welcome former duel-weight champion, McGregor back to the Octagon first the first time since last July.

“What’s gonna be next for him?” Chael Sonnen said on his official YouTube channel. “Let’s just give that a minute. We just got this information that the former number five guy in the world is returning to the division. I will share with you a little inside scoop. I do know that Dan Hooker’s name is on the shortlist of possible opponents for (Conor) McGregor’s return.”

Sidelined still through injury, McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion, most recently headlined UFC 264 in July of last year, the Dubliner suffered a fractured tibia in his trilogy rubber match against former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier – resulting in a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss.

UFC president, Dana White has claimed recently that he currently has no opponent in mind for McGregor’s Octagon return, which he expects to come in fall of this year.

Dan Hooker Shuts The Door On Featherweight Return, Focused On 155

After falling short in his return to featherweight at UFC London, Dan Hooker is refocusing his attention on a run at 155 pounds.

Hooker has lost four of his last five fights in the Octagon, including most recently against Arnold Allen in March. After losses in three of his last four fights at lightweight, Hooker attempted to move back down to 145 pounds in hopes of a potential title run.

Those hopes were squashed by Allen, as he finished Hooker midway through the first round of action. It was Hooker’s first fight at 145 pounds in almost six years.

As Hooker looks to rebuild his game and work to get back in the win column, he’s returning to his old stomping grounds in the lightweight division to do so.

During a recent interview with Submission Radio, Hooker shut down the idea of attempting another fight at featherweight.

“Oh, f*** no, I couldn’t make featherweight if I wanted to,” Hooker said. “I’m closer to middleweight than I am to featherweight. I felt like I could’ve stayed at 145, but obviously a lot of sacrifice goes into that. But off of the result of the last fight, I feel like I’m in the exact same position at both weight classes. So why not? Why would I make the extra sacrifice? The extra sacrifice was to get me back in the same position that I was in. But if I’m in the exact same position [as I’m in at lightweight], I’d rather be in the exact same position and eating, and having a slice of cake every now and then.

“Put a fork in it, bud, I’m out of the conversation [at featherweight].” (h/t MMA Fighting)

Hooker has been honest about why he feels his recent struggles have occurred. He’s cited arrogance on his part as a big reason for his losses and is working on the mental side of fighting ahead of his return.

Before his losing skid, Hooker had been on a roll with three-straight lightweight victories over the likes of Paul Felder and Al Iaquinta. He also earned finishes over Gilbert Burns and Jim Miller as he began his rise at 155 pounds.

Hooker is anticipating a return later this year as he aims to get back into title contention in the UFC.

UFC veteran Dan Hooker will be returning to competition at lightweight after his most recent outing at UFC London

Dan Hooker has become a reliable man for the UFC who is willing to step inside the cage against anyone at almost any notice. “Hangman” has become a fan favorite over the years with wins over former welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns, Paul Felder, James Vick, and Al Iaquinta between 2018 and 2020.

Unfortunately, Hooker has not found the same form since and went on to drop four fights in his last five with his only win coming against Nasrat Haqparast. Out of those four losses, he was finished in three in a rather convincing fashion.

Based on the results of his recent performances, Hooker was hoping a return to featherweight would turn things around for him as he set his eyes on challenging for the title. Those plans seem to have fizzled out after Arnold Allen defeated Hooker by punches and elbows.

In an interview with Submission Radio, Dan Hooker spoke about his plans to return to lightweight after competing at featherweight against Arnold Allen earlier in March this year at UFC Fight Night: Volkov vs. Aspinall.

“Had a couple of weeks off and then stepped on a scale and I was just like ohhhh sheesh, we ain’t going back,” said Hooker. ““I’m closer to middleweight than I am to featherweight. I felt like I could’ve stayed at 145, but obviously a lot of sacrifice goes into that. Why would I make the extra sacrifice? If I’m in the exact same position, I’d rather be in the exact same position and eating and having a slice of cake every now and then. Put a fork in it, bud, I’m out of the [featherweight] conversation.” (h/t MMA Mania)

Dan Hooker is in no rush for his next fight

Having fought four times in just over a year since the start of 2021, Dan Hooker is in no rush to return to action soon. He’s currently ranked 13 at 155 lbs and looks to be quite a bit further away from title contention. Being as active as he is, some time off could benefit the 32-year-old fighter who may just need to give his body more time to recover.

“I’m just chilling,” said Hooker. “I should have a good amount of time off. I should just have a good reset. Like, that’s one thing I realized as well, I’ve just been kind of chasing my tail the last couple of years. I’ve just put the shovel down. I’m still in like shovel down mode. I’m thinking, fuck, how do I get out of this situation. We’ll see. Maybe when the UFC comes a little bit closer. I can get back in the mix, I can get back in the mix in a heartbeat. You can’t count a dog like me out of the game. Like, that’s just not how it works.”

Hooker did respond to Rafael dos Anjos’s callout on Twitter for a fight in July or August of this year. RDA tweeted asking his competition if anyone would like to go against him in the next fight and was not impressed by Hooker’s response as he seeks a higher-ranked opponent.

Hooker Explains Why Johnson/Rodtang Special-Rules Fight Was “Silly”

UFC veteran Dan Hooker has detailed why he believes that the special-rules fight between Demetrious Johnson and Rodtang Jitmuangnon was “silly.”

March saw ONE Championship host its 10-year anniversary extravaganza, ONE X, live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium. The event, which spanned well over nine hours, featured 20 fights that were split across three cards, Part I, Part II, and the Grand Finale.

While a host of MMA, Muay Thai, kickboxing, and submission grappling bouts were on offer, there was one unique contest that drew most of the global attention. In a first-of-its-kind clash, Johnson and Rodtang collided in a mixed-rules four-round fight.

While the first and third rounds were set for Muay Thai rules, Rodtang’s wheelhouse, the second and fourth were to be fought in MMA, significantly benefiting all-time mixed martial arts great “Mighty Mouse.”

The bout certainly delivered, with the first frame seeing the Muay Thai champion chase Johnson down and throw heavy leather. But not only did the former UFC flyweight king survive, but he also landed good shots of his own. When the second round began, Johnson went to work, eventually taking Rodtang’s back and choking him out.

While the contest was undoubtedly entertaining, Hooker has questioned how it could have gone any differently given Rodtang’s grappling inexperience.

Hooker: What Did You Think Was Going To Happen?

During an episode of his weekly show with John Hyon Ko for The AllStar, Hooker discussed the possibility of Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou meeting in a special-rules match of sorts, similar to the one on display at ONE X.

Recalling Johnson and Rodtang’s Circle meeting, “The Hangman” described it as a “silly fight” and one that was always going to fall in Johnson’s favor during the first MMA round.

The New Zealander pointed out that jiu-jitsu isn’t something a striker can learn in a short space of time, especially if they’re expected to battle a legend like “Mighty Mouse” on the mat.

“Silly fight. Silly fight. Just silly. What did you think was gonna happen? He (Rodtang) doesn’t know any jiu-jitsu? [LAUGHS]” Hooker said. “This is not The Matrix, you can’t just like, download jiu-jitsu and be good at jiu-jitsu. I can understand (if) he just didn’t even bother. How are you gonna get better than Demetrious Johnson at jiu-jitsu in a couple of months? Absolutely no chance.

“I like seeing things for fun. If we’re just doing it for fun, I want the promoter to come out and just tell me it’s just for fun. Let’s get a sumo wrestler to fight a luchador, for fun. I love a bit of fun,” continued Hooker. “But let’s not sit around and pretend this is serious, like Francis Ngannou fighting Tyson Fury is like, serious, because we actually wanna see what happens… In a car crash way you wanna see what happens, not, ‘I legit wanna see who’s better.’”

Hooker went on to explain that just because he or other combat sports enthusiasts will be willing to pay for bizarre and unique fights, it doesn’t mean that they’re ‘legitimate activities’.

“Let’s just make a cage drop down from the top and then throw a bear in there. I would like to see that. If you get Francis Ngannou, Tyson Fury, and then put a cage, and put a bear in there, I would pay good money for that… But that doesn’t mean it’s a legitimate activity,” suggested Hooker.

ONE Championship recently asked fans which of its fighters they’d like to see face off in a hybrid-rules bout next. With that in mind, it seems Hooker may be witnessing a few more “silly” contests in the coming months and years.

Do you agree with Dan Hooker’s take on special-rules fights?
