Smack Talk is Against Brett Rogers’ Probation Conditions

(“Well old sport, I look forward to matching skills with you in the chain link-enclosed competition area.”)

According to a report from the Apple Valley Patch, Brett Rogers could land himself back in the clink if he breaches any one of his several probation requirements when he is released from jail later this month.

Most notably, “Da Grim” is forbidden from participating in “assaultive or intimidating behavior toward anyone,” which means that telling his upcoming DREAM opponent Tim Sylvia that he was going to “hurt, maim, or kill” him would be contrary to the terms of his release.

He will also be required to submit a DNA sample to the national registry, complete a domestic abuse education program and will be monitored for chemical dependency — namely alcohol which is said to have fueled his attack on his wife. He will also have no contact with his wife until he is authorized to do so by the treatment program and his probation officer, meaning he probably won’t see his family at Christmas.

If Rogers meets all of the requirements, he will not have a criminal record, since all of the charges were reduced from felonies to misdemeanors.

His lawyer, Murad Mohammad released the following statement regarding his client’s sentencing:

“We are pleased with the result. Obviously we wanted no jail time but given the circumstances it could have gone a lot worse,” he wrote. “We are thankful that the judge agreed with some of our major points. The bottom line is Brett will walk out of this without a felony [after fulfilling the conditions of his probation] and that is what is important.”

Maybe we’re wrong, but isn’t what is important is that his wife can rest assured that something like this is never going to occur again?

Here are Rogers’ complete probation conditions:

No assaultive or intimidating behavior toward anyone
Complete a domestic abuse education program
Submit to chemical dependency evaluation
Submit to random chemical testing
Provide a DNA sample
No contact with wife until authorized by treatment program and probation department

Heavyweight Castoffs Tim Sylvia And Brett Rogers Confirmed For New Year’s Eve DREAM Event

A bout between castoff heavyweights Tim ‘The Maine-iac’ Sylvia (30-7) and Brett ‘The Grim’ Rogers (11-4) has been confirmed for New Year’s Eve in Japan as part of DREAM’s Fight For Japan: Genki Desu Ka Omisoka 2011 event.

The bout was confirmed on Wednesday by Heavy.com who learned of the matchup from sources close to the negotiations.

Fight For Japan: Genki Desu Ka Omisoka 2011 is scheduled to take place on December 31 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. The event will host the semifinals of the DREAM bantamweight Grand Prix, two title matches, and a possible heavyweight bout featuring Fedor Emelianenko vs. Satoshi Ishii.

DREAM has yet to announce the Sylvia vs. Rogers bout, which may be in part because Rogers is serving the rest of his 60-day jail sentence for domestic abuse. He is set for release on Dec. 13, having been given a sentence reduction for time served, and will have just 18 days to secure his travel visa and prepare for the bout.

I would probably expect this matchup to fall through. Maybe DREAM can call on Tim Duffee again at the last minute?

Sylvia, a former UFC champion, has been working hard to get back into the Octagon by going 6-1 in his last seven matches. He may have a long way to go yet though, having fought at Super Heavyweight for six of those bouts. His most recent match was last month at the ProElite: Big Guns event, where he earned a unanimous decision over late replacement Andreas Kraniotakes.

Rogers is just 1-4 in his last five bouts and is living through the consequences of his domestic violence arrest earlier this year. The former Strikeforce fighter had his last fight in September, losing a split decision to Eddie Sanchez at the Titan FC 20 event in Kansas. Before that bout he was eliminated from the Strikeforce Heavyweight tournament by current finalist, Josh Barnett, last June at the Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum event.

Japan always seems to be the stage for odd and strange matchups. If this fight does go down, I hope the fans of that island country can appreciate two very large fighters rolling around for three rounds of un-entertaining action.

Heavyweight ‘Cop vs. Con’ Match-Up Added to Dec. 31 DREAM Show in Japan; Sylvia vs. Rogers Set for NYE

(Will justice be served to Rogers by Sylvia?)

Well, our hunch about Brett Rogers fighting on DREAM’s New Year’s Eve card was right.

According to a report by Heavy.com, the former Strikeforce heavyweight and convicted wife abuser will travel to the Land of the Rising Sun to take on former UFC heavyweight champ and current part-time Illinois police officer Tim Sylvia.

Rogers, who was sentenced yesterday to 60 days in jail for his highly publicized June 28 attack on his wife Tiuana, will be looking to improve on his 1-4 slide in his past five fights. Besides a questionable decision win over Ruben “Warpath” Villareal last October under the W-1 banner, Rogers was finished by Josh Barnett, Fedor Emelianenko, and Alistair Overeem and lost by decision to UFC cast-off Eddie Sanchez in that span. Prior to that, he was a perfect 10-0 including a shocking win over Andrei Arlovski.

The Chicago native, who now lives in Apple Valley, Minnesota, will be released 17 days prior to the bout. He spent 26 days in pre-trial custody, including a 10-day stint for a breach of a court order, and is only required to serve 2/3 of his 60-day sentence.

“The Maine-iac”  has done slightly better than “Da Grim” in his recent outings, racking up a respectable 6-1 record his past seven fights to rebound from a three-fight losing streak that saw him dropped by the UFC, knocked out by Emelianenko and embarrassed by Ray Mercer. The only win of note in his current stretch, however, came against Paul Buentello at War on the Mainland in August 2010. Other than a win over Marius Pudzianowski, he really hasn’t beaten anyone to write Joe Silva about since Zuffa released him. He lost to somewhat unknown regional fighter Abe Wagner January 28, making his plan to make it back to the Octagon an unlikely aspiration unless he racks up a few wins over UFC-level opponents.

The event, dubbed “Fight for Japan: How are you! New Year! 2011,” which will be broadcast live on HDNet, will also feature a lightweight title fight between champion Shinya Aoki and Satoru Kitaoka, a featherweight title bout between champ Hiroyuki Takaya and Takeshi Inoue and a heavyweight bout between Emelianenko and a yet-to-be-determined opponent. Our guess is Todd Duffee, Tim Hague or Sean McCorkle.

On the same day when the UFC officially announced its return to the Asian market with a press conference in Japan, two of the area’s biggest promotions announced that they would team up to increase their visibility and bolster their star power.

DREAM and ONE Fighting Championship have declared an intention to co-promote events and exchange fighters between them, the heads of both promotions announced on Monday.

The change is effective immediately. In a press release, the sides said fighter exchanges are expected to happen quickly, and that a joint promotional effort has been tentatively scheduled for March 31 at Singapore Stadium with the name “ONE FC/DREAM in Singapore.”

“DREAM and ONE Fighting Championship will work together to lead the sport of MMA in Asia to a better future,” DREAM event producer Keiichi Sasahara said in a release. “DREAM has some of the best fighters in the world and we also have deep experience of putting on world-class events. ONE Fighting Championship has the largest media platform in Asia and many other assets. I see many great synergies with this partnership. It is certainly a new era for everyone in Asian MMA.”

Of the two promotions, DREAM has the longer history, producing over 20 events in its 3+ years of existence. It also has the deeper roster, with highly regarded veterans including Shinya Aoki, Gegard Mousasi, Katsunori Kikuno and Gerald Harris. ONE FC has only been in business since early 2011 and produced just one fight card with other scheduled into early 2012. Thus far, however, ONE FC has swiftly penetrated the Asian market, reportedly signing deals that make its future shows available in 500 million households across Asia.

Marius Zaromskis has had a rough go of it in the last couple of years, but one thing he’s always been able to do is kick his opponents in the head in spectacular fashion. And that’s what he did on Saturday.

Zaromskis used a great somersault kick to beat Bruno Carvalho by technical knockout in the first round of their fight in Stockholm, Sweden. That kick was the best highlight of a busy day on the international MMA scene, and it gave Zaromskis consecutive wins for the first time in two years.

In 2009, Zaromskis captured the Dream welterweight title by knocking out both Hayato Sakurai and Jason High, both with head kicks and both on the same day. In his next fight after becoming the dream champ, he knocked out Myung Ho Bae with a head kick. But while those wins put him on the map in the MMA world, he hasn’t had a lot of success since then.

Zaromskis came to America in early 2010 and was beaten by Nick Diaz, then lost a Strikeforce fight to Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos and had a disappointing no contest when he accidentally poked Waachiim Spiritwolf in the eye. He did win a New Year’s Eve fight against Kazushi Sakuraba in Japan, but that fight was more about Sakuraba looking old than it was about Zaromskis looking good. And then Zaromskis lost a disappointing decision to Jordan Mein this year.

For those who enjoy the exciting striking style that Zaromskis employs when he’s at his best, seeing him beat Carvalho in exciting fashion is a positive sign. Zaromskis may never be the Top 10 welterweight that some fans thought he was when he won the Dream title, but he can be a highly entertaining fighter to watch. That was certainly the case on Saturday.
