Nova União coach André Pederneiras told Tatame.com that “(Freire’s) passport expired and he won’t be able to make it before the fight.”

Now DREAM officials have a month to secure a new opponent for Aoki.

DREAM.17: Fight for Japan is scheduled to take place on May 29 at the Saitama Super Arena Hall in Saitama, Japan. The event features the Bantamweight Japan Grand Prix Tournament, with eight participants taking part. The top three will be chosen to participate in DREAM’s World Bantamweight Grand Prix Tournament which takes place in the fall.

Aoki has won four straight bouts, earning a first round submission earlier this month against Lyle Beerbohm in his second fight on U.S. soil at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley. The last time he’s defended his DREAM title was in June of last year at DREAM.15, earning a first round submission win over Tatsuya Kawajiri. That victory was the start of his four fight win streak.

Shinya-AokiAnnounced as a participant on the upcoming DREAM.17: Fight for Japan event at the end of May, DREAM lightweight champ Shinya Aoki (27-5, 1NC) now has an opponent for the event.

Meeting the Japanese champ on his home turf will be Brazilian fighter Willamy “Chiquerim” Friere (17-4). MMAWeekly.com reported the news after learning of the bout from sources close to the negotiations. No word was given on if Aoki would be putting up his title or not.

DREAM.17 is set to take place on May 29 at the Saitama Super Arena Hall in Saitama, Japan. The event features the Bantamweight Japan Grand Prix Tournament, with eight participants taking part. The top three will be chosen to participate in the DREAM’s fall World Bantamweight Grand Prix Tournament.

Aoki recently earned his third straight mma victory earlier this month by submitting Lyle Beerbohm at the April 9 Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley event. It was Aoki’s second fight on U.S. soil and the quick first round submission helped him erase a loss to Gilbert Melendez one year ago in Nashville. Before this months win, the Japanese champ fought on New Years Eve in a mixed rules bout against Yuichiro Nagashima and was knocked out in the opening seconds of the second round.

Freire made his UFC debut in his last bout, losing a unanimous decision to Waylon Lowe at January’s UFC: Fight for the Troops 2 event. “Chiquerim” was released by the UFC after the loss, which also ended an eleven bout win streak for the Brazilian. Before moving to the UFC, Freire was the former Shooto 154 lbs champion, which he defended once then vacated to join the UFC.

Bibiano FernandesWith the financial troubles that Japanese promotions like DREAM is currently experiencing, along with the subsequent disaster that struck the country last month, many fighters have been left wondering what the future will hold for them.

Now that DREAM has officially announced it’s plans for an upcoming Japanese Bantamweight Grand Prix tournament, which will lead into a World GP this September, fighters like former DREAM 145 lbs champ Bibiano Fernandes (8-3) can relax and start focusing on fighting in the tournament.

Fernandes lost the DREAM featherweight title last New Years Eve at the Dynamite!! 2010 event, dropping a unanimous decision to Hiroyuki Takaya. The loss ended a six fight win streak which saw Fernandes win the DREAM featherweight Grand Prix in October 2010.

Speaking to Tatame.com, Fernandes expressed excitement, as well as hope, that the tournament will get off the ground and that he’ll get to compete in the opening round on September 25.

“Bro, we are looking forwards for it. This GP was supposed to happen in July 18th, but it didn’t. Because of the disaster in Japan… But I’m anxious for it, I’m crazy to fight, I hope it really happens, because when you don’t fight you don’t get paid”, commented Bibiano, who doesn’t intend to wait for this GP to move on with his life.

“I want to open my gym now, I’m checking things out, I believe I’ll open it before ADCC. I’ll do it so I train more, I’m also doing it for the money, because it’s hard, man. You don’t fight, you don’t have any money”, concluded the fighter.
