Press Release – KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Sept. 26, 2012) – In the wake of her canceled Strikeforce debut, undefeated sensation Cat “Alpha” Zingano (6-0) of Denver, Colo. will rejoin the much-anticipated Invicta Fighting Championships women’s Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight card at Memorial Hall in Kansas City on Saturday, Oct. 6 and battle highly-touted prospect Raquel “Rocky” Pennington (3-1) of Colorado Springs, Colo. in a featured bantamweight (135 pounds) matchup.

Pennington’s original Invicta FC opponent, Kim Connor-Hamby, has withdrawn from the event due to injury.

Following the cancellation of Zingano’s scheduled Sept. 29 Strikeforce matchup with Amanda Nunes, Invicta FC officials offered Zingano and Nunes the opportunity to square off with each other on the upcoming Invicta FC card. An injury that Nunes had sustained, however, prevented her from accepting the opportunity.

Zingano was originally tabbed for action on the Invicta FC 3 card, but Invicta FC officials sent her to Stikeforce after the opportunity to face Nunes, a top contender, arose.

“We are excited about bringing Cat back into the fold and to be able to give her the opportunity to compete on an Invicta FC card after preparing as much as she did for her scheduled fight with Amanda,” said Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp.

The 5-foot-6, 30-year-old Zingano tip-toed her way into combat sports after becoming the only girl to join her high school wrestling team and, later, competing in college where she earned All-American honors.

In 2007, she began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Professor Mauricio Zingano, whom she later married, and went on to win a number of tournaments, including the 2007 World Jiu Jitsu Championships. Her success in the grappling art and a third round TKO victory in her only amateur MMA bout were the catalysts behind the launch of her professional fighting career.

To date, Zingano has been unstoppable in the hybrid combat sport, earning four of her six victories by way of either KO or submission. All three of her last wins came by way of KO or TKO.

Pennington’s start will be her second in the Invicta FC cage. The 5-foot-7, 24-year-old earned a unanimous decision over Sarah Moras at the last Invicta FC event on July 28 and, less than six weeks after that, returned to action in Honolulu, Hawaii where she submitted Raquel Pa’aluhi with a guillotine choke in the first round (3:52) of their meeting.

Before her professional debut in March when she scored a second round (2:25) TKO on Kim Couture with a series of knee strikes to the body, Pennington enjoyed a healthy amateur career that spanned three years and saw her amass a record of 7-1.

Tickets for Invicta FC 3: Penne vs. Sugiyama, priced from $25, are on sale and can be purchased at Memorial Hall box office (913) 549-4853), online at Ticketmaster.com and InvictaFC.com and by phone at (800) 745-3000.

In the Invicta FC 3 main event, superstar Jessica Penne (9-1) of Laguna Hills, Calif. will face off with undefeated phenom Naho “Sugi Rock” Sugiyama (8-0) of Kyoto, Japan at atomweight (105 pounds) in the first-ever Invicta FC women’s world title bout.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt Shayna “The Queen of Spades” Baszler (14-7) of Sioux Falls, S.D. will return to action in the bantamweight co-main event and take on Invicta FC 2 winner Sarah “The Monster” D’Alelio (6-2) of San Jose, Calif.

Prolific strikers Kaitlin Young (7-6-1) of St. Louis Park, Minn. and Leslie “The Peacemaker” Smith (3-2-1) of Pleasant Hill, Calif. will face off in a highly-anticipated bantamweight rematch to their April 28 slugfest at the inaugural Invicta FC event that ended in a majority draw.

Another Invicta FC 2 victor, Barb “Little Warrior” Honchak (6-2) of Bettendorf, Iowa, will collide with rising star and furious finisher Aisling “Ais The Bash” Daly (13-3) of Dublin, Ireland in a flyweight (125 pounds) contest.

Invicta FC will welcome one of the original pioneers of women’s MMA, submission expert Tara LaRosa (21-2) of Woodstown, N.J., who will lock horns at flyweight with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Vanessa Porto (14-5) of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Michelle “The Karate Hottie” Waterson (9-3) of Albuquerque, N.M. will also make her first start under the Invicta FC banner against Lacey “The Ladie” Schuckman (7-5) of Lakewood, Colo. in an atomweight scrap.

In the leadoff main card bout, Julia “The Jewel” Budd (3-2) of Port Moody, Canada will meet Elaina “Beef” Maxwell (7-4) of San Jose, Calif. at featherweight (145 pounds).

The six-bout preliminary card will be topped by a strawweight (115 pounds) matchup between Carla Esparza (7-2) of Redondo Beach, Calif. and Lynn Alvarez (5-2) of Las Vegas, Nev.

Two undefeated prospects, Ashley Cummins (3-0) of St. Louis, MO. and Joanne Calderwood (3-0) of Glasgow, Scottland will collide at flyweight.

Amy Davis (3-3) of Idaho Falls, Idaho will face Stephanie Frausto (3-4) of Middletown, Ohio in an atomweight affair.

Fresh off her professional debut win at Invicta FC 2, Jessamyn Duke (1-0) of Richmond, Ky. will face unbeaten Marciea Allen (1-0) of Sioux Falls in a bantamweight battle.

Tecia Torres (0-0) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Kaiyana Rain (0-0) of Los Angeles, Calif. will make their respective professional debuts against each other at strawweight.

Unbeaten Xtreme Couture prospect Katalina Malungahu (2-0) of Las Vegas will battle Ediane Gomes (8-2) of Coconut Creek, Fla. via Sao Paulo, Brazil at featherweight.

Press Release – KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Sept. 17, 2012) – An injury has forced Sarah Kaufman to withdraw from her Invicta FC 3 bantamweight (135 pounds) Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) matchup with Kaitlin Young (7-6-1) of St. Louis Park, Minn. at Memorial Hall in Kansas City on Saturday, Oct. 6, setting up a highly-anticipated rematch between Young and Leslie “The Peacemaker” Smith (3-2-1) of Pleasant Hill, Calif.

Promising upstart Raquel “Rocky” Pennington (3-1) of Colorado Springs, Colo. has been tapped to face Smith’s original Invicta FC 3 bantamweight opponent, professional boxer and undefeated MMA prospect Kim Connor-Hamby (4-0) of Stuttgart, Ark.

Both seasoned strikers, Young and Smith engaged in an all-out slugfest for three rounds at the inaugural Invicta FC event on April 28, before a majority draw was declared. Young and Smith were awarded “Fight of the Night” honors for their valiant efforts and the possibility of a rematch has since been a hot topic of discussion.

To date, the 27-year-old Young has earned six of her seven professional wins by KO. In her third start, she scored a memorable KO on former Strikeforce Bantamweight Champion Miesha Tate with a head kick just 30 seconds into their matchup.

Smith, a 31-year-old product of the Cesar Gracie Academy, went unbeaten (3-0) as an amateur before turning pro on March 6, 2009 and scoring a third round (4:16) TKO on Louise Johnson with a series of punches.

The 31-year-old Connor-Hamby boasts a 10-2-2 (4 KO’s) record in professional boxing.

In her MMA debut on June 27, 2009, Connor-Hamby needed just 20 seconds to stop Crystal Hamilton with a barrage of punches.

Connor-Hamby reeled off TKO victories in each of her next two starts and earned a split decision over Jessica Hilger in her last MMA bout on April 17, 2010.

Pennington’s start will be her second in the Invicta FC cage. The 24-year-old earned a unanimous decision over Sarah Moras at the last Invicta FC event on July 28 and, less than six weeks after that, returned to action in Honolulu, Hawaii where she submitted Raquel Pa’aluhi with a guillotine choke in the first round (3:52) of their meeting.

Marloes Coenen Says Ronda Rousey Is A “Great Grappler…But She Does Lack Balls”

Former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion Marleos Coenen (20-5) spoke with PunchDrunkGamer.com recently, pulling no punches when it came to UFC president Dana White and current Strikeforce women’s title holder Ronda Rousey.

Coenen hasn’t been in action since this past April, when she headlined the first Invicta Fighting Championship event, defeating Romy Ruyssen by unanimous decision.

The victory came with a price as the Golden Glory product suffered a torn ligament in her finger and has been on the mend since then.

In the interview with PDG, Coenen pulled no punches when it came to discussing “Dana ‘like a god’ White, and complimenting Rousey as “a great grappler” but someone who “does lack balls.”

PDG: UFC President Dana White recently changed his mind from “Never” to “Maybe” as far as the UFC having woman’s MMA; what do think the chances are that we see WMMA in the UFC?

Marloes Coenen: Honestly, whatever. I have a contract with Invicta FC and they believe in the woman in mixed martial arts and I want to fight for GLORY as they also believe in us women in MMA. GLORY will become such a big and amazing player, I want to be a part of that. Being amongst the elite standup fighters in the world inspires me so much. If you see guys fighting like Semmy Schilt, Remy Bonjasky and Peter Aerts, you can only think about improving yourself. I’m not going to wait till Dana “like a god” White changes his mind to decide my future.

PDG: Ronda Rousey has been on a tear lately, what do you think of her as a fighter and also an ambassador of female MMA?

Marloes Coenen: She is a great grappler. The way she took out Sarah Kaufmann was amazing and so unexpected to me. But she does lack balls, she judoed at 154lbs, entered Strikeforce at 145lbs and when she had to fight Cris Cyborg she dropped to 135lbs. Using me as an example. Let me tell you this, I fought Cyborg (and will do so in the future again) and then was asked by Strikeforce to drop to 135lbs. Having said all this, career wise it was really smart of her and she deserves a master in PR. She doesn’t care how she gets there, as long as she gets there. And she’s successful at it, looking at the magazine covers like ESPN and changing Dana White’s mind.

PDG: Enlight of Cris Cyborg’s positive drug test, do you believe that you deserve a rematch or that the fight should be declared a no-contest or both? And do you think as Ronda Rousey said “That she has cheated her whole career”?

Marloes Coenen: I can be quite naive, but I knew what she was doing when I had to fight her. It was my decision to step into the cage with her. So I have to suck it up as well. It’s not me who can decide what should happen. The authorities (whoever that might be) or fans can do that, not me.

Strikeforce Champ Ronda Rousey Putting Her Foot Down, ‘Cyborg’ Must Come To 135-Lbs

Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey (6-0) is holding to her convictions when it comes to the contested weight limit that any bout between her and Cris ‘Cyborg’ Santos would take place at. ‘Cyborg’ has asked for a 140-lbs catchweight bout, while Rousey insists that the former featherweight title holder come down to 135-lbs where […]

Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey (6-0) is holding to her convictions when it comes to the contested weight limit that any bout between her and Cris ‘Cyborg’ Santos would take place at.

‘Cyborg’ has asked for a 140-lbs catchweight bout, while Rousey insists that the former featherweight title holder come down to 135-lbs where she is the champion.

Rousey explained her stance to MMAFighting.com on Monday, noting that ‘Cyborg’ has gotten away with “cheating” for a long time and that no one has ever “put their foot down” to protest the Brazilians actions.

Well the Strikeforce champ is doing just that, “because I can.”

“If you can make 145 [pounds] while you’re super juiced out, you can make 135 if you’re clean,” Rousey brashly declared.

“Cyborg has never had a fair fight. If you really look at it, she’s had fights where she came in and outweighed the other girl by 12 pounds and then they still fought. This girl has a long history of cheating and using drugs, and coming in overweight, and no one’s ever put their foot down ever about it.

“If we did a catchweight of 140, I 100-percent think she’d just come in overweight and be like, ‘Whatever, come fight me.’ Want to know why? Because she’s done it several times before. She has a track record of doing these things. This girl does things that are blatantly disrespectful to her opponents, over and over and over her whole career. Someone needs to put their foot down about it. So, yeah, I’m going to be the one that has to do it because I can.”

Rousey is coming off a 54-second submission victory over Sarah Kaufman last month in San Diego, and will likely face the winner of this November’s women’s bantamweight bout featuring Olympic Wrestling Silver medalist Sara McMann versus Liz ‘Girl-Rilla’ Carmouche.

A women’s bantamweight match has been added to the recently announced Strikeforce: Cormier vs. Mir event as Sara McMann (6-0) gets set to make her promotional debut versus Liz ‘Girl-Rilla’ Carmouche (7-2).

McMann recently signed with Strikeforce, moving over from the Invicta FC promotion.

News of the matchup was first broke by MMAFighting.com on Friday.

Strikeforce: Cormier vs. Mir is expected to take place on November 3, 2012 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Fans should expect to see McMann vs. Carmouche on the Showtime broadcast of the event with the winner earning a likely title shot at promotion champ Ronda Rousey.

McMann, a former Olympic Wrestling Silver medalist is undefeated in her pro-career, churning out six fights in fourteen months time. She recently earned a unanimous decision over Shayna Baszier in a Inficta FC contender bout, winning a unanimous decision at Invicta’s second ever event. So far McMann has earned three wins by decision, two by decision and one by TKO.

Carmouche has won two straight, competing on the same Invicta FC cards as McMann this year. ‘Girl-Rilla’ recently submitted Kaitlin Young in July to earn her seventh pro-victory. Her other win was a first round TKO finish of Ashleigh Curry in April at the first Invicta FC event.
