This Saturday, UFC Fight Night comes from the Brasilian Capital as a familiar face is in the main event. Brasil native Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva has a main event match-up with “The Pit Bull” Andrei Arlovski. This fight among giants could be an opportunity for either to earn a title shot with champion Cain Velasquez, whom Bigfoot has already loss to twice.

Before Silva, the fourth-ranked heavyweight, can even think about a third go at Velasquez, he has to focus on his opponent this weekend, who is just as tall and equally as aggressive as a striker. Bigfoot has has very inconsistent decisions the last three years. All except for one have been knockouts, with victories over Alistair Overeem and Travis Brown, and defeats to Cain, in addition to top light heavyweight contender Daniel Cormier. Silva throws hay-makers with considerable accuracy, but that is nullified by his ability to avoid punches. His success will like depend on the latter.

Arlovski gets another chance at Silva, who loss via unanimous decision under the Strikeforce banner four years ago. The fighter from Belarus is the #14-ranked contender in the division, with a three-match win streak. Like Silva, Andrei is a striker. He will be looking for and needs a KO finish over Bigfoot to let the world to know that he is still a force.

This fight is going to be vicious, entertaining, and will not go the distance. Both fighters will be looking for the finish early. In Bigfoot’s backyard, he has some added motivation. He wants to impress his country, and he will knock out Arlovski and continue his march back to Velasquez.

Prediction:  Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva by second round T/KO.

UFC Middleweight Bout:  Michael Bisping vs. Cung Le

Odds:  ( -325 Bisping / +250 Le )

Betting Pick:  Bisping

Bet on this fight at Bovada

This Saturday, August 23, 2014, UFC Fight Night originates from Macau, China. The main event this weekend pits seasoned mixed martial arts veteran Cung Le, against the workhorse Pride of Manchester, England, Michael “The Count” Bisping. Both fighters seem to be fighting for different reasons. Cung Le could be thriving to ride off into the sunset, especially since he has won his last two fights. On the other hand, Bisping, who is currently the eighth-ranked middleweight contender, has a lot left to fight for, perhaps working his way back up the ladder to challenge champion Chris Weidman. This fight will look to determine the future legacy of each combatant.

Cung Le arrives in Macau on a two-match winning streak, a first-round KO of Rich Franklin, and a unanimous decision over Patrick Cote. Cung is definitely no stranger to throwing punches. His kickboxing prowess has proven to be Le’s best weapon. He should be able to go toe to toe with Bisping’s striking regularity. The one glaring thing that is working against Le in this fight is Father Time. Not only is Le 42 years old, but he hasn’t competed in a UFC bout in almost two years. Hopefully, the time off will not work to his disadvantage.

Recent history has been inconsistent for Michael Bisping, going back and forth between wins and losses his last six bouts. Bisping will be able to strike standing up with Le. However, taking Le down is essential to Bisping getting a decision. In each of his last three defeats, Bisping suffered from opponents who threw a high volume of punches. Coincidentally, in each of his last three victories, Bisping’s striking was at a premium against opponents who were not able to keep up. Le will be able to, which will provide Bisping with a unique challenge.

This fight will definitely go back and forth. Bisping appears to be the favorite because he is fresher and should be very aggressive from the start. However, Le is a kickboxing machine, and if this fight stays off the ground, he will definitely have an edge. In the end, in these types of bouts, age has a funny way of showing its ugly face. Bisping, younger and fresher, will get by with a few takedowns and take the decision victory.

Prediction:  Michael Bisping by Decision.

Ryan Bader vs. Ovince St. Preux Prediction

Bader vs. St. Preux Prediction

UFC Light Heavyweight Bout: Ryan Bader vs. Ovince St.Preux

Odds:  ( -165 Bader / +135 St. Preux )

Betting Pick:  Bader

Bet on this fight at Bovada

In the main event of UFC Fight Night 47, heavy-handed wrestler Ryan Bader will square off against well-rounded veteran Ovince St. Preux in a featured Light Heavyweight matchup. These are two of the UFC’s top 10 contenders at 205 pounds, and a win here would go a long way toward putting one of them firmly in the middle of the title contention picture. St. Preux is riding an impressive five-fight winning streak, but Bader is a step up from the guys he’s been beating. Bader has been a player at the top of the division for a while, and a third straight win against a top ten opponent might be just what he needs to transform himself into a legitimate title contender.

Ovince St. Preux is a versatile, athletic veteran who can end fights with hard, accurate strikes or with submissions from a variety of positions. He has good hand speed and great footwork, and his aggressive style make him a formidable opponent. Against Bader, he will probably be the quicker and more technical striker, but he will be at a disadvantage in terms of one-punch knockout power and control in the clinch. Similarly, he is a much more dangerous submission grappler than Bader is, but he will probably struggle to find advantageous positions on the ground against Bader’s wrestling.

Ryan Bader is one of the UFC’s most proficient Light Heavyweight wrestlers, and he backs it up with bruising striking on the feet and dominant ground and pound. He’s not as quick or technical as St. Preux, but he has much more one-punch power and is great at using the clinch to control and neutralize opponents while setting up his dirty boxing. Against St. Preux he doesn’t want to let this turn into a boxing match, because I think he will get consistently beaten to the punch. Similarly, he doesn’t want to spend too much of the fight sitting in top position, because St. Preux has a variety of sweeps and submissions off his back.

This is a tough fight to call. St. Preux has more ways to finish and more technique overall, but Bader is a bruiser who is very good at neutralizing opponents. Ultimately, I think Bader’s wrestling will make the difference. He can clinch to stop some of St. Preux’s boxing and he will control when and how the fight goes to the ground. I don’t expect a finish either way, but I expect Bader to exert enough control to take the unanimous decision win.

Prediction:  Ryan Bader by Unanimous Decision.
