The main event of the evening is a highly-anticipated rematch between Lightweight champion Frankie “The Answer” Edgar and Gray “The Bully” Maynard. The last time these two met, Maynard easily outwrestled Edgar for a unanimous decision victory, but Edgar’s boxing has improved greatly and he is riding a huge wave of momentum. Still, if he wants to defend his title, Edgar is going to need a very different gameplan than the one he brought to the first fight.

Maynard, who is unbeaten as a professional, is not one of the more exciting fighters in the world, but he is certainly one of the most effective. Although he has solid enough boxing and decent hands, Maynard’s bread and butter is his dominant wrestling. There is zero chance he wins a boxing match with Edgar, so to capture the belt he is going to have to replicate his last performance and hold Edgar down for five rounds with superior wrestling and positional control. He certainly has the ability and the cardio to do it, but he is going to have to execute his gameplan perfectly.

The champion, Edgar, is a very versatile and well-rounded fighter. He has a very solid wrestling base, although Maynard already proved that when it comes to pure wrestling Edgar can’t match up with him. What sets him apart is his extremely technical and crisp boxing, which coupled with his superior movement and footwork make him a very tough puzzle to solve in the standup game. The most important thing is how well he will be able to use his wrestling to keep Maynard from putting him on his back, because he has no answer for Maynard’s top control.

I think that this is just a terrible stylistic matchup for Edgar. He is clearly the better striker, but he doesn’t have the power or the aggression to really finish Maynard in the standup. Maynard has much better wrestling, and is dominant from top position, and if he has to take a few of Edgar’s punches to secure the takedown he can do it without much fear of being knocked out. I just don’t think Edgar has enough wrestling to stop Maynard if he presses his advantage, and Maynard will control this bout from the top to earn another unanimous decision and the Lightweight title.

Prediction:  Gray “The Bully” Maynard via Unanimous Decision.

UFC Middleweight bout:  Chris Leben vs. Brian Stann

Odds:  (-125 Leben /-105 Stann )

Betting Pick:  Leben

In the semi-main event, the resurgent Chris “The Crippler” Leben will look to keep his recent momentum alive against tough WEC veteran Brian Stann. Leben has great striking and an underrated ground game, not to mention a willingness to wade through damage to land shots of his own, but Stann’s mix of wrestling and punching power will be a stern test for him.

Brian Stann, who made his way to the UFC when the WEC closed their higher weight divisions, started his career with a string of brutal knockout victories, but since coming to UFC has yet to finish a fight. Still, his punching power didn’t just vanish, and he has the power to put anyone down if he lands a clean power punch. He also has decent wrestling to go along with it and solid ground and pound.

Chris Leben is one of the more exciting fighters in the world. A tough brawler with heavy hands, he is more than willing to take a few shots to land a big haymaker and he has a very underrated ground game, as he proved by triangle choking Yoshihiro Akiyama in his last fight. That said, he still clearly prefers the standup, and Stann is probably willing to engage with him on the feet, so this will probably wind up a boxing match.

I think Leben has to be the favorite here. Either guy could conceivably knock the other out, but Leben is more battle-tested, has fought better competition, and has a better chin. The kind of guys who give Leben problems are people with superior technique who can beat him to the punch, and that isn’t Stann. This should be a wild brawl, but eventually Leben will pull out the T/KO win.

Prediction:  Chris “The Crippler” Leben via third round T/KO

UFC Light Heavyweight bout:  Thiago Silva vs. Brandon Vera

In what should be an exciting Lightweight showdown, two dynamic strikers will go at it as Brandon “The Truth” Vera faces off against Thiago Silva. Both of these guys are known for their excellent Muay Thai, so this is an interesting matchup and should be very competitive. This one has fight of the night potential as both guys are willing to trade and have serious standup.

Vera burst onto the UFC scene a few years, putting together a string of highlight reel knockouts. Since then his momentum has cooled somewhat, but he is still a formidable Muay Thai striker who also has very underrated jiu-jitsu. He can hurt opponents from range or in the clinch and he has submissions from top position and off his back. In terms of pure striking ability Silva is the more dangerous fighter, so Vera is going to have to try to tie his grappling and his striking together in order to dictate the pace of this fight.

Thiago Silva is one of the most technical and powerful strikers in the Light Heavyweight division. His Muay Thai is excellent, both technically and in terms of knockout power. He is good at a distance and in the clinch, and can hurt opponents with punches, kicks, knees and elbows. He doesn’t have much in the way of offensive grappling, but his takedown defense is extremely good, which allows him to force opponents to stand with him.

I don’t think this fight is going to go very well for Brandon Vera. On the feet he is outmatched both in terms of strength and power, and while he has vastly superior submissions, I don’t think he has good enough wrestling to take Silva down and hold him there. That means he is going to have to engage in a kickboxing match, and that is going to end disastrously for him. Silva by T/KO.

Prediction:  Thiago Silva via second round T/KO.
