UFC 121 Open for Free Picks!

For UFC 121 we’re teaming up again with BetUS to bring you this months UFC fight night (121)!

The contest is free for everyone to enter, and we have over $500 in fully funded betting money to spread to three accounts at BetUS for the winners.

The following are the prizes for UFC 121…

  • 1st place – $300 betting account at BetUS.com
  • 2nd place – $150 betting account at BetUS.com
  • 3rd place – $50 betting account at BetUS.com

……..

How It Works

To be eligible you MUST sign up for an account at BetUS (it takes less than 5 minutes and is super easy) Just go here to sign up PRIOR to the event… BetUS

Each person has $1000 fictional dollars available for the contest. You Must bet on a minimum of 3 fights and each bet must be a minimum of $100. Last two contests we had everyone placing one bet on the biggest underdog.  That’s no Fun.

So if you bet your $500 on someone at -100 and they win, you’ll be +$500 for the contest!  Here’s another example of how you can use the betting “money”…

  • Rampage Jackson  – $500 @ -800  (to win $40)
  • Jason Brilz – $250 @+350  (to win $1,750)
  • John Hathaway – $250 @ +180

So in this example I bet all $1000 of my fictional money…. And if all three of my bets win, I would be +$1365 for the night!  A good night betting…

You can use your $1000 however you want. Parlays are a good example to win 1st place.   But you must pick at least 3 different bets.   You can bet on one fight, two fights or every fight!  Just make sure you only use $1000.  The 3 participants with the MOST money at the end of the night will be declared the winners, and will win the 3 prizes listed above.

………….

Getting Started

As I said earlier, you need an account at BetUS to be eligible.  If you don’t have an account you can sign up for one for FREE at BetUS (it takes less than 5 minutes).  If you already have an account, that is fine but we will verify that you signed up in order for eligibility.

Once you are signed up, leave your picks below in the comment section with the fighters you want to bet on, and also how much money you want to bet on him.

Here are the odds we will be using for this contest…

Middleweight bout: Michael Bisping vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama

Odds:  (-240 Bisping / +190 Akiyama )

Betting Pick:  Michael Bisping

Bet on this fight at Sportsbook.com

The main event of the evening is a big Middleweight showdown between Ultimate Fighter winner Michael “The Count” Bisping and Japanese standout and former judo star Yoshihiro Akiyama. Bisping has had mixed results recently and Akiyama is coming off a tough loss to Chris Leben, but both guys are still top players in a Middleweight division that is wide open at the top, so this could be an important fight.

Bisping, who won The Ultimate Fighter with ease and then followed it up with successful stints at both Light Heavyweight and Middleweight, is a very well-rounded fighter. His kickboxing is very crisp and technical, although he is notoriously light on power, and he has good submissions and a dangerous ground and pound game to go along with it. While he doesn’t have any actual wrestling background, his wrestling has actually come a long way over the course of his career, and he has pretty decent takedowns and above-average takedown defense.

Akiyama, one of the biggest Japanese stars to appear in the UFC, was a very accomplished judo player before stepping into Mixed Martial Arts. Obviously some of that translates to his fighting, and so he has quality submissions and good takedowns, especially from the clinch. He also has technically sound boxing, although like Bisping he lacks too much punching power for his standup to be especially dangerous.

I think that, stylistically, this matchup favors Bisping. Akiyama has fairly solid boxing, but Bisping is much better on the feet. That, coupled with his underrated jiu-jitsu and solid takedown defense, should be enough to allow him to control the pace of the fight and earn the decision win.

Prediction:  Michael “The Count” Bisping via unanimous decision.

UFC Welterweight bout: Dan Hardy vs. Carlos Condit

Odds:  (-155 Hardy / +125 Condit )

Betting Pick:  Dan Hardy

Bet on this fight at Sportsbook.com

In the semi-main event, British standout Dan Hardy will step into the ring with well-rounded veteran Carlos Condit in a top-level Welterweight match. Condit is one of the more well-rounded guys in the division, but Hardy is easily the best striker at 170 pounds in the UFC, so this is a very interesting matchup, especially considering that Hardy just got done fighting Condit’s teammate Georges St. Pierre.

Condit, an 8 year veteran of the sport who made his UFC debut after the merger of WEC’s higher weight divisions, is a very dangerous, well-rounded, and underrated fighter. He has good boxing with some power, very solid wrestling, and a dangerous submission attack, which makes him the complete package. While he is very good at every range of the fight game, though, he is not particularly dominant in any one area, which could be a problem against a specialist like Dan Hardy.

Hardy, one of Britain’s top stars, is easily one of the best 170 pound strikers in the world. In his last fight against Georges St. Pierre, he also showed very impressive submission defense and an uncanny ability to stay out of trouble on the ground in bottom position. Although St. Pierre completely neutralized his offense, Hardy looked extremely resilient and hard to control. On the feet, there is no one in the division who can best Hardy, which is a huge advantage obviously against anyone.

I think Condit, as good as he is, is overmatched in this one. While he is good at everything, the only way to stop Hardy is to completely control him physically using wrestling, clinch work, and top control. Condit isn’t physical enough to overpower Hardy, his wrestling is not good enough to keep Hardy down reliably, and his standup is not nearly good enough to hang with Hardy. Condit is a tough guy, and notoriously hard to finish, so he will probably hang around until the end, but he is clearly outgunned here. Hardy by decision.

Prediction:  Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy via split decision.

UFC Heavyweight bout: Cheick Kongo vs. Travis Browne

Odds:  ( -185 Kongo /+155 Browne )

Betting Pick:  Cheick Kongo

Bet on this fight at Sportsbook.com

The second bout of the evening has standup war written all over it, as French kickboxer Cheick Kongo faces big man Travis “Hapa” Browne, making only his second Octagon appearance. Both of these guys like to let their hands go and trade shots, so this one has fight of the night and knockout of the night potential.

Travis Browne, a relative newcomer to the UFC, cuts a rather imposing figure. At a whopping 6′7″, Browne is clearly a physical presence, and his extreme reach is complemented by some very serious punching power. Undefeated as a professional, Browne has finished 8 of his 10 opponents by knockout or TKO, with six of those coming in the first round. Clearly, Browne is a capable and dangerous striker. The question is how will he will handle this huge step up in competition and whether or not he can bully around a guy who is probably a superior technical kickboxer, not to mention a guy who has the ability to take him down and liquify his skull with ground and pound.

Kongo, who despite mixed results in the UFC is an extremely formidable opponent, will be entering the octagon at a disadvantage in terms of size, but very little else. He is probably the superior kickboxer in this fight, and certainly the more proven of the two. More importantly, he is not a one-note striker the way the Browne is, since he actually has very underrated takedowns and some of the best ground and pound in the sport.

Browne’s lanky frame is going to work against him in this one. While he will enjoy a reach advantage, his length is going to make it difficult for him to prevent takedowns, and that is exactly what he is going to need to do to win. Kongo is a great striker, but he is not going to stand there and get punched if he can help it, so I expect he will take Browne down early and completely work him over with ground and pound for the TKO stoppage.

Prediction:  Cheick Kongo via first round T/KO.
