UFC Welterweight Bout:  Matt Brown vs. Erick Silva

Odds:  ( +180 Brown / -230 Silva )

Betting Pick:  Brown

Bet on this fight at Bovada

In the main event of UFC Fight Night 40, tough-guy veteran Matt “The Immortal” Brown will square off against Erick Silva in a featured Welterweight bout. While neither of these guys could rightly be considered top-tier contenders in the UFC Welterweight division, they are both exceedingly tough and have versatile offensive skill sets. This fight may not have any immediate title implications, but is has a lot of potential to turn into a hard-fought war of attrition between two similarly skilled fighters with similar fighting styles.

Erick Silva has put together a very successful UFC career, but has bumped his head into a ceiling every time he has tried to step up to the top level of competition. Despite disappointing losses to Dong Hyun Kim and Jon Fitch, though, Silva is a very complete fighter with effective striking, decent wrestling, and solid grappling. While Brown is no slouch on the ground himself, the grappling is where Silva will enjoy the most sizable advantage. Getting into a brawl with Brown would be playing right into his hands, so Silva needs to fight smart, pick his spots, and try to put Brown in bad positions on the ground if he wants a win here.

Matt “The Immortal” Brown is not one of the most technically proficient fighters in the UFC Welterweight division, but he is definitely one of the toughest. Brown is something of a jack of all trades, with decent striking, grappling, and wrestling and no huge, glaring holes in his game. Brown has a great chin and a complete willingness to take damage to deal some of his own. When Brown comes to the Octagon, you know that he will deliver a fight every time. Against Silva, who is a pretty technical submission grappler, Brown’s best bet is going to be to try to force a wild brawl. He is the more durable of the two and probably has better cardio, so the wilder he can make this, the better his chances.

In a three round fight, I think this matchup favors Brown. Neither of these guys is likely to get finished here, but Brown’s reckless aggression and willingness to take risks to put himself in good positions should be enough to tip the scales in his direction. Expect a lot of back-and-forth action, but ultimately I think Brown does enough to capture the unanimous victory decision.

Prediction: Matt “The Immortal” Brown by Decision.

Current Mayweather vs. Maidana Betting Odds – On Saturday, May 3, 2014, pound for pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather will defend his crown against surging contender Marcos Maidana live on Showtime Pay Per View. Mayweather is, without a doubt, the current king of the boxing world. His speed, technical prowess, and slick defense make him the most effective fighter in the world right now. Maidana, though, is riding an impressive win streak which includes a destruction of Josesito Lopez and a one-sided drubbing of Mayweather protege Adrian Broner. There’s no question that Mayweather is on a whole different level from the rest of the sport, but Maidana is a young and talented guy who has as good a chance as anyone of shocking the world.

UFC 172 - Jones vs. Teixeira

UFC Light Heavyweight Title Bout:  Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixiera

Odds:  ( -550 Jones/ +375 Teixeira )

Betting Pick:  Jones

Bet on this fight at Bovada

In the main event of UFC 172, UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones will defend his 205 pound title against up-and-coming striking phenom Glover Teixeira. So far, Jones has handled every challenge that has been put in front of him, but I don’t think he’s had to fight anyone with Teixeira’s boxing prowess or one-punch knockout power. There is little question that Jones can hold his own no matter where a fight plays out, but when a guy has the kind of instant knockout power Teixeira has, you have to fight cautiously and not let your aggression betray you.

Glover Teixeira is easily the most exciting and promising young fighter in the UFC Light Heavyweight division. His boxing technique is extremely good, and every single punch he throws is a potential fight-ender. Unlike many modern fighters, Teixeira is very much a specialist. THat isn’t to say that he can’t wrestle or grapple, but there is no question that his strategy is always to move forward, throw punches, and look for the knockout. Against Jones, he’s going to have to fight very smart and pretty much mistake-free. If he leaves openings, Jones can not only punish him with counter punching, he can take him down and hold him there. On his back underneath Jones is the last place Teixeira wants to end up, so he’s going to have to try to control his aggression, especially in the early rounds when Jones is still fresh.

Obviously, Jon “Bones” Jones is the UFC’s most dominant Light Heavyweight. His mixture of size, reach, strength, athleticism, punching power, and wrestling is totally unique in the division. That said, Alexander Gustafsson proved conclusively that Jones is a human being with weaknesses that can be exploited. Against Teixeira, who possesses brutal knockout power, Jones probably doesn’t want to stand in front of him and box for five rounds. That’s not to say he should abandon his striking fully, but he should try to use it to create space and set up takedowns instead of being content to stand and trade. On the ground, in top position, Jones has the strength and ability to neutralize Teixeira quite effectively.

Honestly, I think this is the toughest fight Jones has had to face to date. Gustafsson was a tough style matchup, but Teixeira’s knockout power adds an entire layer of danger to this fight. That said, I don’t think Teixeira has the versatility to deal with Jones for five rounds. Jones is just so much better at wrestling and fighting on the ground that Teixeira is going to have his hands full. Obviously, Glover always has a puncher’s chance, but I think it much more likely that Jones will force this fight to the ground and punish Teixeira from top position en route to an eventual T/KO win.

Prediction:  Jon Jones by third round T/KO.
