UFC Flyweight Title Bout: Demetrious Johnson vs. John Dodson

Bet on this fight at Bovada

In the main event of UFC on FOX 6, UFC Flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson will defend his title against versatile veteran John “The Magician” Dodson. Johnson had to fight through a tough Flyweight tournament to win his belt, but Dodson enters this fight on a five-fight winning streak and is notoriously durable. If Johnson wants to cement his reign as UFC’s top Flyweight, he is going to have to fend off a hungry, capable, and experienced challenger.

John “The Magician” Dodson is a heavy-handed Flyweight who fights out of Greg Jackson’s camp in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Since debuting in the UFC, Dodson has gone 3-0 with two impressive finishes. He has strong boxing, good wrestling, and a solid top game. In reality, he is a very similar fighter to Johnson. Both are quick, move well, and are versatile. The only big disadvantage I see for Dodson is on the ground. He is a passable grappler, but Johnson is a dangerous submission finisher from a variety of positions.

Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson earned the first-ever UFC Flyweight Title by making it out of a tough tournament with wins over Ian McCall and Joseph Benavidez. Johnson was competitive fighting at higher weights despite his size disadvantage, but looks extremely dangerous at a more natural weight class. He is extremely quick, with dangerous boxing, good wrestling, amazing footwork, and great submissions. Against Dodson he is going to want to use the early going to feel his opponent out, because if he doesn’t give Dodson enough respect he might find his title reign coming to an end.

This has all the makings of a very competitive fight. Both of these guys are long-time veterans with well-rounded offensive skill sets, and they have very similar fight styles. Both like to move around a lot in the Octagon, setting up their offense with great footwork. In the end, though, I think Johnson is just the better of the two. He has a more complete ground game, has fought better opponents, and is overall the more polished fighter. This fight should have a lot of back and forth action, but ultimately I think Johnson will get the better of it and retain his title with a unanimous decision victory.

Prediction: Demetrious Johnson by Unanimous Decision.

UFC Light Heavyweight Bout:  Quinton Jackson vs. Glover Teixeira

Odds: (+240 Jackson /-310 Teixeira )

Betting Pick:  Teixeira

Bet on this fight at Bovada

In the semi-main event, former PRIDE and UFC Light Heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will square off against devastating Brazilian slugger Glover Teixeira. In his prime, Rampage was a feared striker and wrestler who could hang with anyone, but this could well be his last fight. Is there enough left in his tank for a vintage Rampage performance, or will Teixeira cement his status as a top contender with a win over a former champion?

Glover Teixeira is one of the UFC’s most exciting Light Heavyweight prospects. His striking is extremely good and he has a decent ground game to back it up. He has been fighting for years and has not lost since 2005, but Rampage is easily the most accomplished opponent he has ever faced. On the plus side, Rampage will probably be willing to stand and trade with him, and Teixeira shines against anyone foolish enough to present him a target.

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was once a dominant Light Heavyweight in both PRIDE and UFC. His mixture of knockout punching, clinch control, and general toughness made him one of the best 205 pounders in the world. While he has definitely lost a step since his prime, he still has heavy hands and a wealth of experience that makes him adept at bullying opponents from the inside. Against Teixeira, I think he’d be unwise to stand and box like he did back in the day against Chuck Liddell. His best bet is to try to use his physicality to force his way inside where he can control the fight against the cage and use dirty boxing.

Ultimately, I think Rampage’s day is unfortunately over. He was one of the most exciting and dominant Light Heavyweights in the world, but Teixeira represents a new generation of stars. I think Rampage will show a willingness to go toe to toe with Teixeira and will wind up paying for it. Rampage is tough, but his chin isn’t invulnerable, and eventually I think Teixeira will find a way to exploit it. Teixeira by T/KO.

Prediction:  Glover Teixeira by second round T/KO.

Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Ben Rothwell Prediction

UFC Heavyweight Bout:  Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Ben Rothwell

Odds:  (-120 Gonzaga /-110 Rothwell )

Betting Pick:  Rothwell

Bet on this fight at Bovada

In a featured Heavyweight matchup, Gabriel “Napao” Gonzaga will square off against former IFL Champion “Big” Ben Rothwell. These are two large, physical Heavyweights with versatile skill sets, so this should be an exciting and competitive fight. Both guys have had mixed success in their UFC careers, but are capable of big time offense and match up well against each other.

Gabriel “Napao” Gonzaga is a very large and dangerous Heavyweight. A long-time UFC veteran, Gonzaga is a somewhat inconsistent performer. Nevertheless, he has a lot of offensive tools in his arsenal and can finish fights standing and on the ground. He is one of the best submissions grapplers in the Heavyweight division, and while his striking is not technically superb, he has very heavy hands and hard kicks. If this is a standup fight, it is going to come down to who lands a big shot first. What Gonzaga has to do is prevent Rothwell from securing takedowns. He has great jiu-jitsu, but he is going to get mauled if he has to work off his back. He needs to try to keep this fight at a distance and use his long arms to set up big punches, or try to sneak in takedowns of his own.

“Big” Ben Rothwell, the former IFL Heavyweight champion, has been somewhat disappointing since arriving in the UFC. In his last fight, though, he made a statement when he destroyed Brendan Schaub with strikes in just over one minute. Rothwell is a tough, versatile Heavyweight with good striking, a solid chin, decent wrestling, and a dangerous top game. On the feet, he is going to need to watch out for Gonzaga’s leg kicks and big haymaker punches, but most importantly he is going to have to keep himself from getting taken down at all costs. If Gonzaga gets top position, it is highly likely that Rothwell will be forced to submit. Dictating position has to be Rothwell’s number one priority.

This has all the makings of a bruising, physical clash. Both of these guys are big, strong, and durable. Either one of them could land a knockout punch or kick at almost any point of the fight, which only adds to the intrigue. I see this one going the distance, though, with both guys dishing out punishment. Ultimately, I think the edge goes to Rothwell, who should be able to control the position and use the clinch to grind out a decision victory.

Prediction:  “Big” Ben Rothwell by Decision.
