Jan Blachowicz, UFC 267: Blachowicz vs. Teixeira

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jan Blachowicz has addressed his UFC 267 loss to Glover Teixeira, claiming he’d have “lost to anybody” that night.

Blachowicz’s career has often been a tale of resurgence and beating the odds. Having had a veteran complete his journey at the Pole’s expense in October, the 38-year-old will have to dig deep and bounce back from a setback once again.

In 2017, a defeat to Patrick Cummins meant Blachowicz was 1-4 in his previous five fights and on the brink of being released from the UFC. From there, the Cieszyn native defeated the likes of Jared Cannonier, Jimi Manuwa, Luke Rockhold, and Corey Anderson on his way to a title shot. There, he defied the odds and finished Dominick Reyes to experience a heart-warming championship crowning.

Having defended the gold at UFC 259 earlier this year by becoming the first man to defeat middleweight titleholder Israel Adesanya, Blachowicz faced his first challenge from the 205-pound roster in the form of 42-year-old light heavyweight mainstay Teixeira. Joining Randy Couture in the post-40 champions’ club, the Brazilian submitted Blachowicz in the second round in Abu Dhabi.

It Wasn’t Blachowicz’s Night

Given his run since a 2019 defeat to Thiago Santos, Blachowicz’s performance came as a surprise. Dominated in all realms, the Polish powerhouse was outclassed on the night. Now, in an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, the former champ has discussed what went wrong on Fight Island.

In simple terms, Blachowicz admitted that nothing went right on October 30. Despite that, he won’t wallow in self-pity and believes he has what it takes to bounce back in 2022.

“Everything goes wrong, you know. I shouldn’t fight that night. But what can I do? I can just, you know, (go) back to the training, back to the gym, train harder, and try to get that belt back, you know. And that’s it. I’m not gonna be sad, I’m not gonna be thinking about the fight because I don’t want to worsen my life about something like this. I think about the fight, why it goes wrong, but I don’t waste time to be sad. I will not hide under the bed and cry.”

Despite not going into detail on why he doesn’t think he should have fought, Blachowicz did suggest it was bad enough day for him that he’d have fallen to defeat against anybody.

“I wasn’t hurt, that was just bad day for me. I will, I think, I will lose with anybody that night, you know. I don’t want to explain myself. It wasn’t my night, that’s it. But sometimes I need something like this. Sometimes I think that I need to lose the fight; I need to do one step back to do two forward, you know. When you look to my career, always be like this. So I believe this time I learned something from this fight and I’m gonna be a better fighter. Same like Thiago Santos and different opponents who beat me.”

It appears Blachowicz won’t have to wait long for his chance to rebound. Having suggested he’d be open to facing Aleksandar Raki? in March, Ariel Helwani recently reported that the bout is being targeted for the March 26 event.

With the Austrian ranked at #3, it stands to reason a victory over the former champ will book his place opposite the winner of the likely next title fight between Teixeira and Ji?í Procházka in late 2022. Blachowicz will be looking to spoil those plans for “Rocket” by securing his chance for redemption.

Former UFC light heavyweight champ Jan Blachowicz says anyone could’ve beat him at UFC 267, not just Glover Teixeira.

Blachowicz shockingly fell to Teixeira in the main event of UFC 267 by second-round submission, after appearing hesitant with his striking in the opening minutes of the fight. After suffering some hard ground-and-pound at the end of Round 1, Blachowicz was choked out by the veteran Teixeira in Round 2.

It was a surprising win for Teixeira, who was seen as a relative afterthought at this stage in his career by many. During a recent interview on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Blachowicz explained what led to him losing his 205-pound title.

“I shouldn’t have fought that night. What can I do?” Blachowicz said. “I can just get back to the training, back to the gym. Trying harder and just trying to get the belt back. That’s it. I’m not gonna be sad because I don’t want to waste my life on something like this… Do a little bit of break, was on a vacation. That [UFC 267] was just a bad day for me. I think I would have lost to anybody that night. I don’t want to explain myself. It wasn’t my night you know. Sometimes I need something like this. I need to take one step back to do two forward. I learned something from this fight and I’m gonna be a better fighter.”

Jan Blachowicz’s Loss To Glover Teixeira Snapped A Five Fight Winning Streak

Blachowicz earned the vacant light heavyweight title over Dominick Reyes at UFC 253, knocking him out in the second round of the bout. He would then defend his title against middleweight champ Israel Adesanya before ultimately losing it to Teixeira.

Blachowicz is targeting a return to the octagon sometime in the first quarter of 2022, with many possible opponents to match up with. Former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Anthony Smith has called for a fight with Blachowicz, and the timing would make a lot of sense for both sides.

Teixeira will most likely face Jiri Prochazka for his first title defense at a later date.

Glover Teixeira Alex Pereira

Glover Teixeira believes it won’t be long until we see Alex Pereira fight Israel Adesanya.

Pereira recently enjoyed a successful UFC debut earlier this month when he knocked out Andreas Michailidis with a flying knee on the UFC 268 featured prelim earlier this month.

Naturally, many were already eyeing up a future middleweight contest between him and current champion Israel Adesanya. That’s because the pair are 1-1 against each other in kickboxing with Pereira notably being the only fighter to knock out Adesanya.

And training partner and UFC light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira believes a trilogy in the form of an MMA contest could take place in a year’s time.

“I told [Pereira], ‘One year,’” Teixeira said on The MMA Hour. “I told him when he signed with the UFC, ‘Hey man, they’ll be talking about you in about one year, three fights.’ Especially the way he fought. It couldn’t go better.

“I couldn’t be more happy as a coach as a training partner that’s been telling people that this guy is no joke. He’s got a lot to learn, but he’s learning things quick. He’ll get things quick. I’m talking about you get a regular guy and whatever, that guy’s gonna learn in six months – [Pereira will] learn in a week. You show him a move and he just does it.”

Glover Teixeira: Three More Fights For Adesanya vs. Pereira

Although it wasn’t Pereira’s MMA debut, it’s still very early in his MMA career as it was just his fourth fight in the sport.

However, Teixeira sees similarities between Pereira and himself in how they’re able to quickly pick up things and utilize it straight away.

That’s just another reason why he is confident Pereira is just three fights away from facing Adesanya.

“Alex is kind of like [me in training] and couldn’t have done better [at UFC 268],” Teixeira said. “He got taken down, he defended takedowns, he got up and he stayed there. You see the other guy come out of the clinch, the guy’s face was all messed up, he was dead tired and he come out with the flying knee. So calm, so relaxed.

“I say three more fights the most, and he wants to fight quick. He wants February already, he wants to fight quick, so he’s going to fight back to back probably. No injuries, no nothing. By this time next year, they’ll be talking about him and Adesanya.”

Teixeira has called Connecticut home for years as the Brazilian lived there before he was even legally allowed to be in the States. After receiving the key to the city, the UFC light heavyweight champion gave a speech where he thanked the town for allowing him to live there and helping him become the champ.

“I’m just so happy this is happening over here,” Teixeira said. “I come to Danbury in 1999 and people just warm hearts over here, just opened their arms for me. It’s the land of opportunity. I had a dream in Brazil to be a professional athlete. Most of the people, I have a lot of people from my town here, they know how hard it is over there.

“I couldn’t train, I couldn’t do anything and I come here and I say, ‘This is the land of opportunity, I want to be a world champion,” Teixeira continued. “[Former coach] Greg Davis is one of my guys there that trained with me. He was there when I say — I couldn’t speak much English — he asked me, ‘Why are you training in jiu-jitsu for?’ I said, ‘I want to be UFC champion.’”

Glover Teixeira is now 33-7 as a pro and at 42-years-old became a first-time UFC champion. The Brazilian is on a six-fight winning streak and holds notable wins over Thiago Santos, Anthony Smith, Rashad Evans, Rampage Jackson, Ryan Bader, and Jared Cannonier among others.

Glover Teixeira’s Road to Glory

Those MMA fans who have followed his career will know just how impressive what he has done is, at the age of 42. Teixeira held an eight-fight winning streak when he challenged Jon Jones for the belt back in 2014. Although he was unsuccessful in his attempt and would go on to trade wins and losses up until the start of 2019, Teixeira wasn’t to be put off.

The Brazilian started his hot streak with a first-round submission win over Karl Roberson in January 2019. He would follow this up with Rear Naked Choke victory over Ion Cutelaba, earning himself a performance bonus. He would then edge out a split decision victory over Nikita Krylov before returning to the bonus column with his TKO win over Anthony Smith. Teixeira would then submit Thiago Santos extending his winning streak to five before fulfilling his lifelong dream by dethroning then Light Heavyweight Champion Jan Blachowicz.

At 42 years old who knows how long Glover Teixeira’s will be able to maintain his time at the top with many fans speculating his first defence will come against Jiri Prochazka.

Ji?í Procházka, Glover Teixeira

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Glover Teixeira has suggested his likely title defense against Ji?í Procházka will take place in either April or May next year.

Defying the odds and Father Time, Teixeira had UFC gold wrapped around his waist at the age of 42 last month. At UFC 267 in Abu Dhabi, the Brazilian faced Jan Blachowicz in the main event. Despite many expecting the veteran to fall short against the Polish powerhouse, Teixeira dominated a short fight, submitting the 38-year-old with a second-round rear-naked choke.

The victory saw Teixeira join the great Randy Couture in the post-40 champions club, something “The Natural” had predicted pre-UFC 267. The Brazilian’s title crowning also saw a remarkable resurgence and winning streak culminate in him securing his seat on the 205-pound throne for the first time.

Teixeira Targets First Defense For Second Quarter Of 2022

While many, including Blachowicz, had expected Teixeira’s career to come to a close with a defeat inside the Etihad Arena, the champion is now looking forward to his first title defense. The leading contender is undoubtedly Ji?í Procházka.

The Czech knockout artist arrived in the UFC last year after accumulating a devastating 26-3 record, which included 23 knockouts. In two Octagon appearances, “Denisa” has added brutal KOs of former title challengers Volkan Oezdemir and Dominick Reyes to his résumé.

During a recent appearance on Ariel Helwani’s The MMA Hour, Teixeira said that he believes Procházka will be the man standing opposite him for his first title defense next year.

“Yeah, I think so (Ji?í is next in line). For me, it doesn’t matter, you know. I’m a fighter, I’m always a fighter. I want always to fight the champion. I’m fighting whoever is coming my way. Ji?í is supposed to be the next guy, he was there (UFC 267) cutting weight, waiting for that title. He’s supposed to be the next guy.”

After winning the belt at UFC 267, Teixeira found himself with a six-month medical suspension due to an injury to his right shoulder. After confirming that he’s likely pulled a muscle, the champ announced his intention to rest and recuperate over the coming months, before returning to action in the second quarter of 2022.

“I have a minor injury in the shoulder. I went to just look at it today. Doctor says it’s pretty cool, it’s probably just a pulled muscle. But you know man, April/May next year. Hang out to see, chill, relax. I need a little rest on my body. Come back next year and start training”
