Former football star Herschel Walker had said he wanted to step up to face a higher level of competition when he participates in his second professional mixed martial arts fight on December 4. But that’s not going to happen.

Instead, Strikeforce has matched Walker up with Scott Carson, a 40-year-old whose only fight in the last nine years was a first-round knockout loss.

Carson got involved in MMA in the 1990s and has a 4-1 professional record, having won four fights against little-known opponents before leaving MMA in 2001. He returned to the cage this year and was knocked out in less than three minutes by Lorenz Larkin.

Herschel Walker to Fight Another Guy No One has Ever Heard Of

So, let me get this straight: Herschel Walker’s opponent at next month’s Strikeforce show is a 40-year-old light heavyweight who took 10 years off from fighting to nurse a back injury and then in June got knocked out in the first round of his “comeback” fight at an event called “MEZ Sports” in Los Angeles? Well, that’s just super.

Look, I’ve got no beef at all with this dude Scott Carson. Frankly, if you’re an unknown fighter who gets offered the chance to take on a celebrity like Walker on the televised portion of a Strikeforce card, you pretty much have to take that deal. Hell, you might even win. Suffice it to say, however, that none of Carson’s previous five fights can be found on YouTube – probably because most of them occurred before YouTube was invented – and a Google search for his image only turns up a bunch of pictures of  the goalkeeper for West Bromwich Albion. So I have to ask: What are we really doing here, Strikeforce?  What do we hope to accomplish with this, besides the possibility of netting two or three minutes of airtime from Jim Rome or Colin Cowherd the week of the fight? I mean c’mon, even Kimbo Slice had the decency to fight people we’d sort of heard of before.

When Herschel Walker made his mixed martial arts debut in January, he dominated his opponent, Greg Nagy. But while that opponent choice didn’t exactly captivate the MMA world, Walker is hoping that Strikeforce matches him up with a more recognizable name for his second effort.

Walker is already scheduled to fight on a Dec. 4 Strikeforce event, and the promotion is currently working on finding him an opponent.

“I was very honored to fight Greg, but Greg was like myself: he was green, he was young,” Walker told Ariel Helwani on the most recent edition of The MMA Hour. “I said, ‘This time, I’ve got to fight someone with a lot of experience.’

Seven months after making his mixed martial arts debut, former NFL star Herschel Walker says he hasn’t lost any of his enthusiasm for MMA and will be back in the cage fighting for Strikeforce this year.

“I have a little one, so my number one focus is my child, but after that my focus is on fighting,” Walker told MMAFighting.com. “I’m training at AKA with some of the best trainers and some of the best fighters and as I get closer I’m trusting them to make the decision to tell me when I’m ready for my next fight. This is a very serious, very tough sport and I want them to tell me when they think I’m ready.”

UFC President Dana White isn’t the only one who wants to put on a Texas-sized event. Strikeforce has also had preliminary internal talks about staging a show at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, MMA Fighting has learned.

The discussions, which were confirmed by two separate sources with knowledge of the situation, have not gone past the exploratory stages.

When contacted by MMA Fighting, Strikeforce representatives downplayed the possibility of such an event.

On July 3, Brock Lesnar beat Shane Carwin in the UFC’s biggest heavyweight fight of the year. Cain Velasquez was sitting cageside and had already been declared next in line, and the UFC soon said Lesnar would fight Velasquez in October at UFC 121. Fans are already getting excited about that fight, and the UFC’s heavyweight division hasn’t lost any of the momentum the Lesnar-Carwin fight built.

A week before Lesnar beat Carwin, Fabricio Werdum beat Fedor Emelianenko in Strikeforce’s biggest heavyweight fight of the year. Alistair Overeem was sitting cageside and was expected to be next in line, but the three weeks since that fight have provided nothing but confusion about what’s next for those three heavyweights.

Strikeforce puts on plenty of good fights, but its biggest problem as a promotion is an inability to do what the UFC did when it announced Velasquez vs. Lesnar: Strikeforce never has a good answer when fans want to know, “What’s next?”
