Luke Rockhold

Luke Rockhold was very critical of Sean Strickland following the No. 4 ranked fighter’s knockout loss to unranked opponent Alex Pereira at UFC 276.

While speaking to Submission Radio about his own return to the Octagon, Rockhold discussed Sean Strickland’s bout with Pereira and believes the ever-controversial middleweight lost the bout mentally which lead to his first-round knockout.

“I think he got conned by the system,” Rockhold said. “Sean, he just proved how f*cking dumb he is. The system wanted him to try and stand with him and prove that stupid point, and he just [fell for it]. It happens. It happens to a lot of people. You try to over-prove yourself and do something stupid. That’s the game, that’s the fight game. It’s a mental f*cking battle, and he lost the battle.”

Rockhold was scheduled to face Sean Strickland at UFC 268 in November 2021, but the bout fell through when Rockhold was forced to withdraw due to injury. Now the former UFC and Strikeforce champion will make his long-awaited return at At UFC 278 on August 20th in Salt Lake City. There, he faces one-time UFC title challenger Paulo Costa.

Luke Rockhold Calls Pereira vs. Adesanya a ‘Compelling Story’

With Pereira’s big win over Strickland, he finds himself sitting in the No. 6 spot in the middleweight rankings and is likely the next in line for a shot at Israel Adesanya‘s middleweight crown.

Pereira and Adesanya are very familiar with one another. Competing twice under the Glory kickboxing banner, ‘Poatan’ defeated ‘The Last Stylebender’ twice including a brutal knockout at Glory of Heroes 15 in 2017.

“Yeah, it’s an intriguing story, Alex Pereira has beat ‘Izzy’ twice,” Rockhold said. “And so you’re looking at any level of intrigue, and so they’re looking for someone that they can throw in the mix, even though Alex Pereira would get mauled by, 20 guys in the UFC would probably maul him. But yeah, it’s a compelling story Israel Adesanya if you get him past a brawler like Sean Strickland. So, they did it, and it’s up and going. So, it’s my job to go f*cking deter that.”

Israel Adesanya

After Israel Adesanya left fans unhappy with his performance at UFC 276 this past weekend, the current middleweight champion has been under criticism from numerous notable figures within the industry. Former two-division champion Henry Cejudo was the latest to blast the champ.

Cejudo slammed the champion, insisting the organization stop promoting the middleweight king, Israel Adesanya.

Adesanya is just several days out from a convincing victory over challenger Jared Cannonier at UFC 276. The scorecards read (49-45, 49-46, 50-45), with Adesanya successfully making his fifth defense of his middleweight strap.

There were mixed emotions between fans, fighters, and analysts on the main event title fight between Adesanya and Cannoneir, with some appreciating the work the champion displayed and others labeling the fight ‘boring’, ‘lackluster’, and ‘dead’.

Israel Adesanya Addresses Critics

At the post-fight press conference, Adesanya addressed the public reaction to the fight:

At the post-fight interviews, he stated: “F**k them. They’ve been here since 3 PM. They’re all drunk. They don’t know what real fighting is or real finesse. The greats, they all get to this point. I’ve seen it when I was just a fan. I’m still a fan.”

On ‘The Triple C & Schmo Show’, Cejudo shared his thoughts about Adesanya and his last fight saying (h/t Sportskeeda):

“It’s crazy when you come out to freaking, to The Undertaker (theme song), and you didn’t put on a performance, man, on Saturday night. It was lame, dude. You gotta start giving, main events are special, dude. If he’s not performing, UFC, stop pushing this dude. He’s a decision-maker.”

Cejudo also stated he thought the only time Adesanya has looked how he talked was his first meeting with Robert Whittaker in 2019, which saw him attain UFC gold for the first time. Cejudo added:

“He hypes a lot, and he doesn’t deliver. He talks a lot, and he doesn’t deliver. It’s been like that with him for a minute now. And I think if you’re gonna call people out and do all this other stuff, finish them. Put a beating on people. Be spectacular. People look forward more to his entrance than his actual fight, and that’s a problem because what you do wanna be good at is when you fight.”
