Daniel Cormier would like to see a title eliminator fight between Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Mackenzie Dern.

Dern is coming off an impressive first-round submission win over Nina Nunes at UFC Vegas 23 this past weekend. It put her on a four-fight winning streak while she will likely crack the top five of the women’s strawweight division soon.

Jedrzejczyk, meanwhile, hasn’t competed since her five-round war with Weili Zhang in March last year that saw the champion edge out a razor-thin split decision. She doesn’t seem eager to compete anytime soon either unless it’s for a fight that interests her or another title opportunity.

If Jedrzejczyk is willing to fight anyone next, however, Cormier would like to see her battle the ever-improving Dern in what would be a No. 1 contender fight for the 115-pound strap.

“If the former champ wants to fight, I would love to see (Dern) fight Joanna Jedrzejczyk because if she can win that fight, I don’t know if you can even question whether or not she should get a title fight if she beats Joanna Jedrzejczyk,” Cormier said on DC & Helwani (via MiddleEasy). “Mackenzie Dern has earned the right to fight the elite or the elite, and it’s because she is so in tune with who she is today, as a mother, as a wife, and just as an athlete…

“She’s so game on the feet, and once you’re on the ground with her, it’s like watching a Jiu-Jitsu tutorial. (Dominick Cruz) and I are watching the fight, and Mackenzie slides into the mount and immediately you’re like she’s going to go chase the armbar but she’s going to do it in a way where Nina Nunes doesn’t recognize that it’s coming, and that’s exactly what happened. Mackenzie Dern is truly something special, and it’s a joy to watch someone really mature into the athlete that people thought that she could become.”

It’s certainly an intriguing and fresh matchup. Whether Dern is ready for a former champion or whether Jedrzejczyk is interested in fighting her remains to be seen as of now.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk fired back at Stephen A. Smith for his latest comments.

The controversial ESPN commentator recently made headlines when he stated that he wasn’t a fan of women in combat sports.

“When I think about pugilistic sports, I don’t like seeing women involved in that at all,” Smith said. “I just don’t like it. I wouldn’t promote legislating laws to prohibit them from doing so, but I don’t want to see women punching each other in the face.

“I don’t want to see women fighting in the octagon and stuff like that, but that’s just me. What I would adamantly be against is them fighting men. I don’t think that’s cool. Plus, you don’t ever want to give men license to believe that it’s all right to be physical with a woman, to be quite honest with you. You don’t want to do that.”

Those comments naturally saw Smith come under fire from many in the combat sports world. And former UFC women’s strawweight champion Jedrzejczyk decided to personally respond to him on Wednesday.

“I appreciate your transparency @stephenasmith . Although I wish everyone at ESPN—and throughout the world—saw women’s sports in a positive light, I assure you that we women don’t need your support.”

Smith hasn’t responded as of yet, but much like the criticism directed at him last year for his comments on Donald Cerrone, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he clarified his comments soon.

While the MMA world collectively awaits their rematch, Joanna Jedrzejczyk thinks Zhang Weili might not want it to happen.

Jedrzejczyk and Zhang met in the co-main event of UFC 248, with the latter’s strawweight championship on the line. The two engaged in a back-and-forth war that was instantly viewed as a ‘Fight of the Year’ contender as soon as the final horn sounded. Many consider it the greatest women’s MMA bout of all-time, solidifying Zhang as a legitimate champion and reinforcing Jedrzejczyk as one of the sports most electrifying competitors.

In the 10 months since, neither women has stepped back into the octagon. It is widely believed Zhang is awaiting a match-up against Rose Namajunas, while Jedrzejczyk has spent the time recovering and relaxing at her home in Poland. Given how close their first encounter was, fans have been hoping for an eventual rematch between the two at some point down the line. In an interview with SCMP MMA, Jedrzejczyk expressed some doubt over Zhang’s willingness to make it happen (H/T BJPenn).

“Maybe she doesn’t want to face me,” Jedrzejczyk said in response to why she thinks the UFC didn’t book an instant rematch with Zhang. “She doesn’t want to fight me? But she beat me… so there are going to be people saying, ‘Oh, but you got beat up,’ but this fight was so close, man. If [I didn’t have the] hematoma, it could be different. But no, it’s okay.”

“I will be more than happy to see Rose facing Weili Zhang. Maybe Rose will win this time. I’m staying patient.”

Jedrzejczyk finds herself on a 2-4 stretch, after starting her career 14-0. However, all of her career losses have come in UFC title fights – twice to Namajunas, the loss to Zhang, and a loss up a weight class against Valentina Shevchenko for the flyweight championship. Zhang, on the other hand, saw her winning streak extended to 21 fights after the decision over Jedrzejczyk.
