Zombie made it two wins in a row following an impressive second-round TKO victory over Frankie Edgar in the UFC Busan headliner on Saturday night.

And in his post-fight interview, he made sure to call out the new featherweight champion in Alexander Volkanovski.

UFC Busan has a new poster.

The Korean Zombie was originally supposed to face Brian Ortega in a featherweight contest in the main event on December 21. However, Ortega had to pull out due to injury with just a few weeks to go for the event.

In stepped Frankie Edgar on short-notice despite having his bantamweight debut against Cory Sandhagen booked for next month.

Edgar and Zombie were originally supposed to face each other at UFC Denver in 2018. However, the former had to pull out due to injury on that occasion. That is one of the reasons why he took this fight among others.

“It played a part,” Edgar said. “I felt like we were very familiar with him. We were so close to fighting just a year ago so it wasn’t that far off. We were supposed to fight and I want to right that wrong.”

It’s now set to happen in just over a week’s time. It will seemingly be Edgar’s last-ever featherweight bout as he also stated his fighting future would be at 135 going forward.

There were a number of reasons why Frankie Edgar decided to step in on short notice to face The Korean Zombie later this month.

Edgar will replace Brian Ortega and face Zombie in the main event of UFC Busan on December 21. That means his bantamweight debut will have to wait for now as he was originally scheduled to face Cory Sandhagen in the co-headliner of UFC Raleigh next month.

So why did “The Answer” decide to step in despite having another fight booked?

“I heard that [Brian] Ortega was hurt and I went to my team and I touched base and I said if you need someone, I’m available,” Edgar told MMA Fighting. “I feel like I was ready. My team liked the fight. Lately, I’m just about experiences and this is a good experience to have in my life. I’ve done a lot in this career. I’ve never taken a fight on two weeks’ notice across the country, so why not add that to the repertoire.”

Another factor was the fact that Edgar was supposed to face Zombie in the UFC Denver headliner last year. However, he had to pull out due to an injury at the time.

“It played a part,” Edgar added. “I felt like we were very familiar with him. We were so close to fighting just a year ago so it wasn’t that far off. We were supposed to fight and I want to right that wrong.”

One person who obviously didn’t like the news was Sandhagen. Edgar sympathizes with him but believes they’ll eventually meet down the road:

“It sucks. That’s the breaks,” Edgar said about Sandhagen. “I’ve definitely been disappointed in this game quite a bit myself. I’m sure I’ll meet him down the road if not in January.”

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar’s bantamweight debut will have to wait.

Edgar was set to face Cory Sandhagen in the co-main event of UFC Raleigh next month. However, with the news of Brian Ortega pulling out of his featherweight matchup with the Korean Zombie at UFC Busan on December 21, “The Answer” proved to be the answer and will now be stepping in.

There is no word on how this affects Edgar’s fight with Sandhagen. The New Jersey native will be reassessing things after the fight with Zombie, especially with UFC Raleigh taking place a month later on January 25.

Sandhagen was notably unpleased with the news that Edgar was attempting to slot in for Ortega before it became official.

“It’s not cool of Frankie to do something like that,” Sandhagen told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani. “I don’t know if money got involved or what, but I thought this guy wanted to have another run at a belt and to call himself the best in the world. I thought that’s the kind of fighter Frankie was. It’s what he said he wanted.

“It’s sad that his values got mixed somewhere and now he’s taking a fight that isn’t going to get him within arm’s reach of a title, like the fight against me would. The UFC is trying to do their jobs and save a huge card, which I get, but they’re also losing a shot at an opportunity to turn a young, new face into a star and the Raleigh fans are going to be pretty bummed too.”

For now, the promotion is reportedly seeking a backup for Edgar. Maybe Pedro Munhoz can fill the void?

Brian Ortega is ready to get back inside the Octagon. If it were up to him, he’d like to settle his issues with “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung.

Jung began to tease a fight with Ortega on Instagram, posting a photograph of himself and the jiu-jitsu ace side-by-side. It was rumored for some time that the fight between Ortega and Jung was to headline UFC Mexico City. However, the UFC decided to go with Yair Rodriguez vs. Jeremy Stephens instead.

Speaking to MMA Fighting recently, Ortega admitted he believed the fight with Jung was actually going to happen. He even had members of his team set up training facilities in Mexico City before the fight fell through.

“In my head it was great. “Korean [Zombie]” was talking smack, I felt good, I was already back to training, I was like cool. I had my boys in Mexico City set up, training facilities over there,” Ortega said.

“I had a whole layout and then some unfortunate events in management and team and everything happened. Now we had to fix everything and now we’re back.”

Ortega comes off the first loss of his professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career. A fourth-round TKO loss to Max Holloway for the 145-pound title. The doctor stopped the fight after the fourth round concluded, as Ortega was taking some big punishment. After eight months of being sidelined, Ortega is ready to fight again, and wants “The Korean Zombie” when he does.

“I want to fight. I want to give the fans a main event fight somewhere,” Ortega said. “Korean Zombie” sounds good, especially after the fact that he’s talking s—t, which is not like him, so I’m guessing there’s something behind that.

“If he can keep talking and the fans want to see it and we can make that a main event somewhere, we should.”

What do you think about a potential matchup between Ortega and Jung?
