Press ReleaseThe deal is done; the stage is set; the time is fast approaching: three clichés that fans around the world have been eagerly waiting to hear. On February 12th, when the first bell sounds to kick off what is being widely considered as the greatest heavyweight tournament in mixed martial arts history, it’s in proper fashion that the assembled cast of superstars set to collide in the single-elimination brackets include Fedor Emelianenko.

Widely considered one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, heavyweight fighter in the sport’s history, Emelianenko’s unprecedented run of 28 consecutive victories spanning nearly a decade of fighting marked the Stary Oskol, Russia native as a true ambassador for what ‘sportsmanship’ was meant to define in MMA.

With the world reeling after his shocking upset loss to Fabricio Werdum this past June, a humble man considered to be the most dangerous human being on the planet spoke to the media with a quote that embodies a warrior’s heart and humility: “A man that does not fall, does not stand up.” A truly inspirational message from the mild-mannered athlete which succinctly described his acceptance that the streak was over and the time for a new battle was imminent on the horizon. At the time, no one could have predicted that the horizon included his position in a tournament of such epic proportions.

In the main event of M-1 Global and Strikeforce’s co-promoted event from the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Emelianenko (31-2, 1 NC) is set to take on Antonio Silva (15-2) in the evening’s second quarterfinal fight of the three-stage, single-elimination tournament. With all eight participants equally talented, no fighter is receiving a free pass to advance to the semi-finals and Silva represents a true threat in his own right as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt winning eight of his last nine; all but two of his victories have come by knockout with only five tilts venturing past five minutes.

But the great Fedor Emelianenko has fought some the most recognizable names in the sport as well; men like Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, Andrei Arlovski and Mark “The Hammer” Coleman and has defeated many of his rival superstars in devastating first-round fashions of his own. Clearly the heavyweight tournament of 2011 represents a new era of increasingly talented, hybridized mixed martial artists and marks a new challenge for Emelianenko, who is as stoic and ready as he has ever been. “I have been training very hard since my last fight and eager to get back inside the cage. Strikeforce has assembled a roster filled with the best heavyweights in the world and I’m blessed to have the opportunity to fight them in a great tournament format.”

With only one other official loss to his record resulting from a doctor stoppage due to an early cut against Tsuyoshi Kosaka during their December, 2000 bout, Fedor seized the opportunity to avenge the blemish nearly five years later with his own first-round TKO of Kosaka at a PRIDE Fighting Championships event. If the brackets play out in favour of Fedor’s fans, Emelianenko could face Werdum later this year and provide yet another grand stage to avenge his second career loss within the tournament. But following in the humble footsteps of Emelianenko, fans will wait in earnest for the clock to tick down to February 12th and play out the ‘what-if’ scenarios at the close of this legendary tournament’s first bouts.

In addition, STRIKEFORCE has assembled eight of the world’s top ranked heavyweights to compete in the STRIKEFORCE World Grand Prix – Heavyweight Tournament, a three-stage, single-elimination tournament that will take place over several events in 2011. In the main event, the 34-year-old Emelianenko will face the towering Antonio “Big Foot” Silva (15-2) in a STRIKEFORCE and M-1 GLOBAL co-promoted event. Co-featured on Feb. 12, former world champion Andrei Arlovski (15-8) will face Sergei Kharitonov (16-4), the last man to defeat current STRIKEFORCE Heavyweight World Champion Alistair “The Demolition Man” Overeem.

The other two quarterfinal matchups are as follows: Overeem (34-11, 1 NC) will face the only man to tap out Fedor, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist Fabricio Werdum (14-4-1), while the heavy-handed Brett “The Grim” Rogers (11-2) will meet a hungry Josh Barnett (29-5). The location and date for these quarterfinal tournament fights are to be announced.

“We are thrilled to have come to a long-term agreement with Fedor and M-1 GLOBAL,” said STRIKEFORCE CEO Scott Coker. “To have the greatest MMA fighter of all-time put his legacy on the line in a single-elimination tournament will truly captivate MMA fans worldwide. STRIKEFORCE is home to the best heavyweight division in the world; the athlete who runs the gauntlet in a tournament such as this would have to be considered the best heavyweight fighter in the world.”

“I’m very pleased to be working with SHOWTIME and STRIKEFORCE and Mr. Coker and Mr. Hershman personally. Thanks to their interest and efforts, we’ve created what will go down in history as MMA’s greatest heavyweight tournament of all time,” said Vadim Finkelchtein, co-founder of M-1 Global. “M-1, STRIKEFORCE and SHOWTIME have built a partnership committed to the future growth of MMA—a sport where organizations represent a working collaborative that enable the best fighters in the world to fight each other. This agreement benefits everyone, especially the fans who’ll see Fedor in action more often.

With the STRIKEFORCE World Grand Prix’s single-elimination format and the biggest names in the sport today, this tournament is something that no sports fan will want to miss.”

“I have been training very hard since my last fight and can’t wait to get back in the cage,” said the 6-foot, 235-pound Emelianenko, who hails from Stary Oskol, Russia and is promoted by M-1 GLOBAL. “STRIKEFORCE has assembled a roster filled with the best heavyweights in the world and, together with M-1 GLOBAL, we have the opportunity to fight the best in a great tournament format.”

Fedor’s unprecedented, record-setting run of 28 professional MMA bouts without a defeat has prompted many MMA enthusiasts to label Fedor as the greatest of all time. Since his career began 10 years ago, Fedor has faced and defeated many rival superstars and champions of this era including Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, Andrei Arlovski and Mark “The Hammer” Coleman.

In what ranks among the most watched MMA fights in the United States, Fedor made his live primetime network television debut on Nov. 7, 2009 on CBS, when he defeated unbeaten rising star Brett Rogers in a STRIKEFORCE and M-1 GLOBAL co-promoted event. Despite a difficult first round in which he sustained a deep cut above his eye, Fedor turned the tide early in the second round with one vicious right-hand punch and finished Rogers shortly after.

Then, on June 26, 2010, Fedor suffered a stunning upset at the hands of Werdum, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., in one of the most watched MMA bouts on SHOWTIME. Werdum, who has defeated a host of top rivals including Overeem, Silva and Brandon “The Truth” Vera, trapped Fedor’s arm in a triangle armbar that forced Fedor to tap out at the 1:09 mark of the opening round.

Fedor has only one other official loss on his record, the result of a doctor stoppage due to a cut he sustained seconds into a matchup with Japan’s Tsuyoshi Kosaka on Dec. 22, 2000. Fedor avenged the TKO loss with his own first-round TKO of Kosaka at a PRIDE Fighting Championships event in Japan on April 3, 2005.

fedor emelianenko iiiRussian heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko (32-2) looks set to make his return to the cage on February 12 against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (15-2).

Sherdog.com broke the exclusive on Monday. They were informed of the upcoming fight by sources close to the negotiations.

Fedor and Silva will meet at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J. in the opening round of Strikeforce’s eight-man heavyweight tournament.

Also confirmed for the tournament will be former UFC heavyweight champs Andrei Arlovski (15-8) and Josh Barnett (26-5), who will battle it out on the same Feb. 12 card in New Jersey. A third rumored matchup between Fabricio Werdum vs. Brett Rogers is expected for a March show. No news was provided as to who the fourth semi-final matchup fighters would be.

Fedor was defeated by Werdum for the first time in ten years last summer in a huge upset as the Russian was the heavy favorite to win. It was “The Last Emporer’s” second Strikeforce appearance having TKO’d Brett Rogers in November of 2009 in his promotional debut.

“Bigfoot” Silva has won two straight and is 2-1 since joining the Strikeforce promotion. The Brazilian defeated Mike Kyle by knockout in December after the fighter took the bout on short notice after his original opponent, Valentijn Overeem was forced to withdraw due to injury. Silva also earned a unanimous decision win over Arlovski in May at the Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery event and was submitted by Werdum in his Strikeforce debut in November of 2009.

Update: MMAFighting.com says the deal isn’t done yet and it hinges on whether negotiations can get done by the end of this week.

“it was likely that Emelianenko’s participation on the card would require that the deal be done by the end of this week, and that the two sides had several outstanding issues to deal with.”

Fedor001As many of us are waiting impatiently for the return of “The Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko (32-2) to the cage, Friday’s news was a bright light that finally fans would see the Russian heavyweight return at the end of January to face Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (15-2).

Not so fast, representatives from both Strikeforce and M-1 Global are saying that negotiations are still ongoing, that nothing has been finalized for the Jan. 29th Strikeforce card.

A report by Sherdog.com has both sides talking about a February date for Fedor’s return, not the end January card.

CEO Scott Coker commented on the negotiations with M-1.

“You know how these things are, they go back and forth. We send them documents; they send them back… They want changes; we want changes. I’m just trying to get the lawyers to hurry and finish it up so we can make some great fights. It’s hard to talk about opponents. Normally, you talk to someone about opponents only after you have a contract with somebody. We’re working through the final stages of the deal. We are not there yet. I wish we were.”

Breaking the news of the upcoming fight seems a bit premature but is likely a pressure tactic by one of the sides to bring about a resolution to the negotiations. I’ll leave it up to you to guess speculate as to which side that could be, but I’m guessing they like a sip of Vodka every now and then.
