TJ Dillashaw’s coach thinks a true challenge would be for his fighter to go to featherweight in order to fight UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway. This fight has been talked about a lot as of late with the UFC bantamweight champion even entertaining it. Dillashaw recently stated that he would move up to featherweight.

He is slated to challenge Henry Cejudo for the UFC flyweight title at UFC on ESPN+1. Dillashaw will move down 10 pounds to challenge for Cejudo’s 125-pound belt.

Potential Fight

Duane Ludwig, who is the longtime coach of Dillashaw, stated in a recent interview that the move in weight class  is “in the realm of possibility.” In fact, he thinks that this move would be tougher than the one in front of him.

“I think that would be more of a challenge to go up in weight than it has been to go down in weight,” Ludwig told MMAjunkie. “T.J. is not a big bantamweight anyway. Going up in weight, that’s when we’ll see more change.

“I assume he would become possibly a little slower, but have more power. But we’ll see what ends up happening if that’s the journey for us. Right now we’re focused on the task at hand.”

UFC on ESPN+ 1 (also known as UFC Fight Night 143) is set to take place on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

One of the more intriguing rematches in the UFC right now is one between Max Holloway and Conor McGregor.

“The Notorious” defeated the Hawaiian via unanimous decision back in 2013. Eventually, McGregor would go on to become the biggest star mixed martial arts (MMA) has ever seen. Also, Holloway hasn’t lost a fight since being defeated by the Irishman and is now the 145-pound champion. Now that both men have risen to elite status in the UFC, fans would love to see the two rematch after they’ve evolved.

If that were to happen, MMA coach Firas Zahabi is picking “Blessed” in the rematch. Zahabi believes Holloway would “outwork” and “outpunch” McGregor if they fought again (via Bloody Elbow):

“If I had to pick Max Holloway vs. McGregor today, I would pick Max Holloway,” Zahabi said. “I think Holloway has grown leaps and bounds since then. In my opinion, Holloway would out-punch him, outwork him.

“He would do very much what Diaz did [to Conor McGregor], but more,” he said. “I think McGregor got away with a lot of stuff, like the leg kicks against Diaz, but I don’t think he’ll have that against Holloway.”

McGregor has now lost twice inside the UFC, both by way of submission. Because of that, Zahabi believes the blueprint the beating one of the sporting world’s biggest stars is more clear:

“Holloway has the same type of output as Diaz, the same kind of chin as Diaz,” he said. “He’s more athletic than Diaz, he has more variety in his attacks, he has more kicking, kneeing and elbowing, and his chin is just phenomenal.

“So I really think he would take it in the later rounds. I think the blueprint for beating McGregor is more well understood by the roster.”

TJ Dillashaw addresses making the potential move to featherweight as well as a showdown against the division’s champion Max Holloway. Before he can do this, he must get past his next opponent. The UFC bantamweight champ is slated to challenge Henry Cejudo for the UFC flyweight title at UFC on ESPN+1. Dillashaw will move down 10 pounds to challenge for Cejudo’s 125-pound belt.

Dillashaw is fresh off a big win as he scored a first round KO victory over Cody Garbrandt in the main event of UFC 227 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

The UFC bantamweight champ recently stated that he would move up to featherweight as he believes he could make weight.

Weight Class Change

“Would I move up to 145 [pounds]? Absolutely, man,” TJ Dillashaw said on a recent Instagram live video (H/T to MiddleEasy). “I would love to. I’m a professional. I train hard. Making ’25s has been a process in its own. To get my body down there and do it the right way. ’45s would have to be the same thing, it would be a lot of work.”

“Everyone wants me to go to featherweight and fight Max. I would love to. But look, one step at a time. Let’s run through Cejudo first then Max can be next. [I can] be the first one to ever go for three belts.”
