Press Release – August 24, 2011: The Maximum Fighting Championship has set its final fight for the main card of MFC 31: The Rundown, and it is sure to be an explosive collision.

In a matchup featuring the MFC’s hottest prospect, Dhiego “Maluco” Lima will put his undefeated streak on the line against rugged veteran “Dangerous” Terry Martin.

It is an interesting turn in the development of Lima (6-0), who has torn through his opposition under the MFC banner. At MFC 29 back in April, his older brother Douglas Lima defended the MFC welterweight title with a stunning knockout of Martin (21-9), needing only 1:14 to retain the belt. Now Dhiego Lima is going up against the same man and with a lofty goal in mind.

“I’m going to knock out Terry Martin and I’m going to do it faster than my brother did,” said Dhiego.

The Martin-Lima matchup will be one of the highlighted bouts on the HDNet Fights live broadcast of MFC 31 emanating from the Mayfield Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, on Friday, October 7. HDNet’s broadcast launches at 10 p.m. ET/8 p.m. MT/7 p.m. PT with Michael Schiavello and Frank Trigg calling all the action (check local listings for channel designation).

Lima captured his third straight victory in the MFC looking sharper than ever in a first-round knockout of Jamie Toney at MFC 30 in June. The Atlanta, Georgia, product notched the second stoppage of his career by landing a barrage of punches on Toney before the referee stepped in just 2:47 into the bout.

The victory over Toney catapulted the 21-year-old Lima up the worldwide rankings and garnered him the reputation as one of the elite up-and-comers in the welterweight division. He possesses a rare combination of overall athleticism, developing skills both in stand-up and submission, and perhaps his most recognized quality, a ferocious, attack-minded nature.

At MFC 29, Lima registered the fourth submission win of his blossoming career as he outlasted Josh Taveirne on his way to a fight-finishing rear-naked choke with only 1:25 to go in the contest. Lima’s debut in the MFC was an impressive one as he put away Bill Fraser with a one-punch knockout at MFC 27.

Martin returns to the MFC attempting to rebuild on a three-fight winning streak that was stopped by Douglas Lima at MFC 29.

The 30-year-old Chicago, Illinois, native has racked up 12 knockout victories over the course of his eight-year career, and holds notable wins over Chael Sonnen, Jorge Rivera, and Ivan Salaverry. Martin boasts a 10-fight winning streak that launched his career, and he has stood across from a host of other big-name fighters including Vitor Belfort, Chris Leben, and Marvin Eastman.

The Martin-Lima fight rounds out main card for MFC 31: The Rundown. The entire lineup is:

Rameau Sokoudjou vs. Ryan Jimmo, MFC light-heavyweight title

Terry Martin vs. Dhiego Lima, catchweight

Richie Whitson vs. Kajan Johnson, lightweight

Adam Lynn vs. Curtis Demarce, lightweight

Sabah Fadai vs. Mukai Maromo, lightweight

Ryan Chiappe vs. Cody Krahn, welterweight

The undercard for MFC 31 will be announced shortly.

Tickets for MFC 31: The Rundown are going fast and available only through the MFC Ticket Hotline at (780) 504-2024.

Era Fight WearPress Release – June 29, 2011: The Maximum Fighting Championship has entered a new era – one which unveils ERA Fightwear as the new official clothing sponsor of the MFC.

The ERA line was recently featured at MFC 30, and after making an impressive showing, a partnership was forged.

“I’m very excited about the way ERA Fightwear has immerged and really stepped up its game,” said MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich.

“There’s a lot of passion behind what they are doing, as well as a lot of effort to make something that they are proud of. That’s a major component that they have in common with the MFC, and I think ERA is a great fit to go along with us.

“Clothing brands have come to us, and we’ve helped them grow and get to the next level, and then they’re gone. And we’ve had so many brands approach us and say they want to be with the MFC, but they haven’t been around very long or I didn’t like their stuff, so we waited.

“It’s not always just about money. The clothing had to be something I wanted to wear. With ERA, we’ve got a brand with designs that I will wear and I will tell everyone about.”

The timing worked out perfectly for ERA which was looking to make a hugely identifiable mark in the saturated marketplace of mixed martial arts fightwear.

“We’re unbelievably excited. It couldn’t have worked out better for us than to go with the MFC,” said Jon Nipshank, Co-Owner and CEO of ERA Fightwear. “Mark has been incredible to us and we’re incredibly happy to making this move. This is going to put us on the map in MMA.

“We’ve seen what has happened with other companies when they’ve joined up with the MFC. They’ve gone from being something you’ve never heard of to becoming a well-known name. It’s the same with many of the MFC fighters. You never heard of them until they come to the MFC and suddenly they become somebody.

“Everyone who comes with the MFC has grown because the MFC is so loyal to the people that they have around them.”

Pavelich, who will sport brand-new ERA wear on this Friday’s episode of “Inside MMA” on HDNet, believes the same thing will follow suit for ERA.

“I enjoy bringing something special, that is yet unknown, to the forefront and making it bigger than it ever thought it could be. ERA Fightwear is next,” Pavelich added.

ERA Fightwear not only looks great on the fighters, including rising MFC welterweight sensation Dhiego Lima, but the clothes are classy enough to be worn by fans of all types.

“Everyone has taken plain designs and just thrown them all together, and you don’t even know what the design is. We’ve kept our stuff clean and neat so you can actually see the picture on it,” noted Nipshank, whose inspiration has often come from a love of ninja movies.

“Our latest collection we call the Comic Book Collection because they have that comic book style but we’ve still kept everything clean so that fighters and regular people will wear it. It’s very stylish but anyone can wear it.”

Undefeated MFC Welterweight Dhiego Lima Ready For All Challenges

Many fans won’t be too familiar with the first name of Maximum Fighting Championship’s latest rising star in the welterweight division, but most will certainly recognize the last name.

Dhiego Lima, younger brother too former MFC 170 lb champ and Season 5 Bellator tournament participant Douglas Lima, earned his sixth straight victory last Friday night to remain undefeated in his pro-career. Dhiego faced a very tough, and experienced opponent, in ‘The Ghost’ Jamie Toney on the live HDNet broadcast of MFC 30: Up Close & Personal in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Toney, who is undefeated in six bouts himself, looked to be outstriking the younger Lima in the opening round, but a late takedown proved his undoing. Dhiego was able to put Toney on his back and began dropping hammerfists to his opponents head from side control. The referee appeared to give Toney time to defend himself properly, but Dhiego proved to be too much forcing the ref to step in at 2:47 of the first.

“I felt good tonight, I wanted a quick finish. So thank God that I got it. I went in there expecting a three round war, but I always look for the finish. Thankfully I got it.”

Dhiego isn’t sure when he’ll fight next, he has several fights left on his contract with the MFC and will likely appear at the promotions September event.

“I don’t know (what’s next). I’ll do whatever my manager and Mark (Pavelich, the owner of the MFC) wants me to do. I’m going to keep training, and whatever happens, happens. I’ll keep training and take care of my family. Whenever they call me to fight, I’ll fight anybody, that’s the way it is.”

Dhiego is full of confidence when it comes to his brother Douglas’ chance of success in the upcoming fall Bellator Season five tournament.

“I think it is great. His chances are great (of winning the tournament). They have a bunch of tough fighters (in the tournament), but the level that he is and the mentality he has right now, he is going to win it all. I can tell you that.”

Afterwords Dhiego noted there would be little time to celebrate as he was back to his full time job on Sunday. The Ascension MMA and American Top Team product, who currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia, hopes that his star will rise high enough so that one day he can make fighting his full time job instead of his part time one.

Fans have not seen the best that Dhiego Lima has to offer, as the 21-year old fighter noted that his future training camps would receive a big boost by the cooperation of camps coming together in Atlanta. One name joining Dhiego in the gym will be UFC middleweight Brian Stann, who will not doubt improve the skills of the young MFC welterweight.

Mixed Martial Arts Events Need Strong Regulatory Bodies

logo2332Canada has turned into one of the biggest markets for mixed martial arts in the World, as the recent stadium sellout of 55,000 tickets for the recent UFC 129 event stands as a testament of that statement.

On Friday night, the land of “True North Strong and Free” held three events, two of which featured several big names and television deals. The Maximum Fighting Championship held its MFC 30: Up Close & Personal event in Edmonton, Alberta airing live on HDNet, while the Score Fighting Series inaugural event in Mississauga, Ontario is set to air via tape delay on TheScore television network (and via live video stream last night). Also taking place, was the smaller Edmonton based Aggression MMA “Confrontation” event.

Now that I’ve established that, I’ll get to my point.

These three events stand as examples of why it’s important to have an overall regulating body for combat sports, such as the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) and the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).

The Score Fighting Series was overseen by the Ontario Athletic Commission, who presides over all events in Canada’s biggest Province, follows the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts and as recently as April 1st of this year began started its duties. Friday’s nights event ran smoothly, there didn’t appear to be any hiccups with the show, and the event drew in such big names as DREAM welterweight champ Marius Žaromskis, former UFC vets Joe Doerksen, Luigi Fioravanti, and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou.

This is an example of how things should be managed for the sport of mma for those States and Provinces who do not have one single regulating body.

Now if you look at the two events in Edmonton, Alberta on Friday night, you have two separate events and two different regulatory bodies. The Province of Alberta, as well as British Columbia which hosts tonight’s UFC 131 event, have sanctioned the sport of mixed martial arts but have delegated the task of monitoring events to local commissions.

Edmonton features two commissions, with the River Cree Combative Sports Commission overseeing the MFC events and the Edmonton Combative Sports Commission overseeing the AMMA event.

Despite the River Cree’s years of regulatory experience, they still have a ways to go to establish them as a top commission within Canada. There were several examples on Friday night of issues that are never seen, or non-issues seen at UFC, Strikeforce, or Bellator events.

The first that stands out is the miscalculation of scores by the judges initially awarding Robert Washington the split decision win over Curtis Demarce. This was later overturned later in the evening after the scores were recalculated giving the split decision win to Demarce. It would be easy to discount the incident if it only happened once, but in 2009 judges at the MFC 23 event scored a fight between Jason ‘The Athlete’ MacDonald vs. Solomon Hutcherson a draw after miscalculating the scores once more. The bout was announced as a split decision win for MacDonald by the end of the evening.

I also take objection to the point deduction to Sheldon Westcott, who earned a unanimous decision over Thomas Denny. From my vantage point, Westcott was not targeting the back of his opponents head, hitting Denny only once in each incident before the ref stopped the action. Now I agree that strikes to the back of the head can be dangerous, but there has to be some lee-way when your opponent keeps turning the back of his head into his opponents oncoming strikes.

I also take issue with the Drew Fickett vs. Brian Cobb stoppage in the first. I think it was an early stoppage but I also think Cobb would have stopped it in the second. I could go on more but I’ve ranted long enough.

Unfortunately I don’t have first hand knowledge of Friday’s AMMA event, which apparently went well for the Edmonton Combative Sports Commission but not so well for the promotion. According to TopMMANews.com, the co-main eventt was declared a “No Contest” after a hole opened up in the cage floor, taking 15 minutes to repair in order for the main event between Ryan Ford vs. Nick Hinchliffe to happen.

No the main issue I take with the ECSS is their willingness to set mixed martial arts back about ten years by sanctioning an upcoming Colloseo Championship Fighting: Bushido event in the city of Edmonton. The event will feature rules based on the days of PRIDE Fighting, allowing soccer kicks and head stomps to downed opponents.

With the sport looking for good examples to help move it into the main stream, providing more ammunition to those who oppose mixed martial arts hurts everyone involved. Certainly the nostalgia of the action from PRIDE is exciting, but it shouldn’t effect the future of the sport and it’s further development.
