The One Who Knocks (People Out): Brian Bowles Arrested For Possession of Meth

(Photo via MMAWeekly.)

You guys remember Brian Bowles, right? The pasty, Mark Wahlberg-looking UFC veteran best known for (figuratively) ending Miguel Torres‘ career? Anything? I wouldn’t blame you if you’re coming up short, as the former WEC bantamweight champion has been MIA since getting TKO’d by George Roop at UFC 160 and subsequently failing his post-fight drug test.

Well as it turns out, ol’ Bowlesy has spent his time away from the octagon pursuing various…pursuits that wouldn’t exactly fall in line with what you’d expect of MMA fighters not named Charles Bennett. Mainly, mainlining meth and valium.

Well as it turns out, ol’ Bowlesy has spent his time away from the octagon pursuing various…pursuits that wouldn’t exactly fall in line with what you’d expect of MMA fighters not named Charles Bennett. Mainly, mainlining meth and valium.

Bowles was arrested for possession of both aforementioned drugs in his Georgia home a couple weeks back, and is now facing six felony charges. From the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Facebook:

On January 14, 2015, The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office arrested Rhomney Marie Moon (35) of Jefferson, Georgia and Brian David Bowles (34) also of Jefferson, Georgia on drug related charges. The Sheriff’s Office responded to Bowles residence on Stoner Road in Arcade, Georgia in an attempt to serve an arrest warrant on a wanted female possibly at this location. This particular female was not located however; Investigator’s found Moon and discovered she did have an outstanding Probation Warrant.

After a search of the immediate area Investigator’s found a quantity of methamphetamine. A Search Warrant was executed at the residence and a quantity of marijuana, other narcotics, a gun and numerous packaging materials were also located within the home. Moon and Bowels were both arrested and transported to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. Moon has been charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of a Schedule IV Drug, Possession of Schedule IV Drug with Intent to Sell, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Sell, Possession of Tools for the Commission of a Crime and Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime. Bowles is charged with the same. Both are currently incarcerated.

“The Sheriff’s Office responded to Bowles residence on Stoner Road in Arcade, Georgia.” Stoner Road. Brian Bowles lives on Stoner Road. Please, please someone tell me that he has a dog named Doobie. Or Heisenberg.

Of course, getting arrested isn’t exactly a new thing for Bowles. The former UFC fighter was booked on suspicion of DUI in 2010 and was also picked up by Jackson County Sheriff’s Department in 1999, 2003 and 2007, according to Yahoo.

We’ll have more details on Bowles’ arrest as the information is made available, but for now, I think we should all just be thankful that Domestic Assault was not among the charges listed against him. It’s a low bar, but someone’s gotta set it.

Dave Herman’s Wife Posts Video of Tasering/Arrest, Claims Husband Was “Assaulted by Police”

Former Bellator/UFC Dave Herman had a less than ideal Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to say the very least. After being spotted with a missing tail light and leading Indiana police on a “3 mile chase” early Monday morning, Herman was tasered, hauled into custody, and slapped with a litany of felony and misdemeanor charges including but not limited to Resisting Law Enforcement and Battery Against Law Enforcement. Oh yeah, and his wife and infant son witnessed the whole thing.

That last part bears mentioning, because as it turns out, Herman’s wife, Madeleine, was recording the majority of the incident with her computer prior to Herman’s arrest. In addition to contesting the report filed again “Pee Wee” yesterday, Madeleine also teamed up with retired Marine, libertarian talk show host, and activist Adam Kokesh to release the video of Herman’s arrest. Suffice it to say, the video paints a slightly different picture of what went down than the police report.

Suffice it to say, the video paints a slightly different picture of what went down than the police report.

Video after the jump.

A few things:

1. Herman’s insistence on driving to a “well-lit, video-recorded area” before pulling over was a really, really dumb thing to do.

2. His insistence on asking for three forms of ID from the officers pulling him over was also a bit…presumptuous, considering the 3-mile chase he had allegedly just led them on.

3. That being said, he didn’t exactly come off as a violent man who needed to be tasered.

3.5. Is “Battery of an officer” (aka Battery of Law Enforcement) really the standard charge handed out when a taser is used on *you*? Because that seems…contradictory.

Madeleine has insisted that Herman has yet to be released, and is calling for all “liberty brothers and sisters” to demand that Herman be released and the officers who arrested him be held accountable. Madeleine is also claiming that, contrary to what they are telling the public, the police have refused to release Herman. Kokesh added in a later update:

If you call and they tell you that [Herman] has been released, they are lying! I just got a text from Madeleine and as of 8:06 p.m. Tuesday, he is still in jail.

“The prosecutors have 48 hours to set bail or arraign. They have been refusing to give out info on whatever the hold up is, but after some persistent calls, one lady finally snapped and said they were going to wait until the 47th hour to finish his paperwork because they do not appreciate his sense of humor.”

More on this story as it develops, but in the meantime, you can contact Madeleine Herman at [email protected]. The DeKalb Prosecutor’s Office can be reached at 260.925.1646.

Dave “Pee Wee” Herman Arrested on Three Felony Charges Following Police Chase

(On a scale of Rory Markham to Mayhem Miller, I give it a Thiago Silva.)

As something of a nihilist, I’ve always thought that our species was/is genetically inclined toward chaos and would/will exploit even the smallest opportunity to prove so, be it Black Friday, an extra day off of work, etc. Give us a day off to tackle some home improvement projects and maybe see Selma, and we give back an army of dirt bike riders on the freeway. It’s like what T.S. Eliot said, “This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang *or* a whimper, but with a holiday weekend.”

Case in point: The MMA community over the past few days. Not only did BJ Penn KTFO his amigo over the weekend, but now it is being reported that former Bellator/UFC heavyweight and sayer of dumb things, Dave Herman, was arrested in Indiana on multiple felony charges yesterday following a brief chase with police as well.

Details after the jump.

The official report of Herman’s arrest has been made available below via the Dekalb Sheriff Department’s Facebook.

So a bar fight, a police chase, and another possible Mayhem Miller assault. Is that MMA’s version of bowling a turkey?

We’ll keep you updated on Herman’s arrest as the information is made available.

More Details Emerge in BJ Penn’s Alleged Assault in Bar Parking Lot

Hawaii News Now – KGMB and KHNL

A HawaiiNewsNow report published yesterday filled in a few more details about BJ Penn‘s alleged assault of a friend in Maui over the weekend. As the story goes, Penn and Kuuipo Mokiao were drinking together at a bar called Kauhale’s in Kihei on Saturday night, when Penn began picking a fight with people inside. Mokiao told investigators that he pushed Penn to stop him, and Penn responded by challenging Mokiao to a fight.

Mokiao apparently agreed to go outside with Penn, which means he has bigger balls than we do. But the altercation quickly turned violent once they headed into the parking lot, as Penn suddenly punched Mokiao in the face, then kneed him in the forehead while he was defending himself. According to the HawaiiNewsNow story:

But the altercation quickly turned violent once they headed into the parking lot, as Penn suddenly punched Mokiao in the face, then kneed him in the forehead while he was defending himself. According to the HawaiiNewsNow story:

Sources said medics took the 37-year-old victim to the emergency room at Maui Memorial Medical Center for a fractured left eye socket. Mokiao told police that Penn left the scene after security guards broke up the argument. Officers later tracked Penn down at a hotel in Wailea. He had suffered a minor cut to his right eye, according to sources. Penn was arrested for second-degree assault and then released pending the police investigation.”

Could Mokiao simply have gotten the worst of a consensual (though drunken) bar fight? Let he who has never beat his friend’s ass in a bar parking lot cast the first stone, am I right?

Penn has yet to make a public statement about the incident. We’ll let you know if that changes.

BJ Penn Arrested in Maui After Alleged Hotel Room Assault

(This will have to do until the mugshot is released. / Photo via Getty)

Retired UFC legend BJ Penn was arrested on Saturday night at his hotel room following an altercation between him and an unidentified friend. As first reported by MauiWatch.com, Penn “was staying at the Four Seasons Maui when police responded and encountered an inebriated Penn. According to [MauiWatch’s] anonymous source, Penn severely assaulted the individual and left him fleeing back to the hotel room where the arrest was later made.”

BloodyElbow confirmed the report with local police, stating that the Maui County Police Department “were unable to provide further details other than the fact that he has already been released.”

This is the second time that BJ Penn has been arrested after a violent incident. In 2005, Penn was charged with first-degree assault after he punched a police officer outside of a nightclub in Waikiki, which was hosting a pre-party for Rumble on the Rock 7. Penn plead no-contest in that incident, and was eventually sentenced to one year of probation, community service, and substance abuse treatment.

We’ll keep you posted as details of Penn’s latest arrest emerge.

UFC Confirms Michael Johnson’s Arrest for Battery Following ‘Domestic Dispute’ in April

(Johnson’s booking photo, via mugshots.com)

Just two days after announcing that Michael Johnson would face Edson Barboza at UFC Fight Night 61, the UFC has revealed that his long layoff in 2014 was due to an April arrest for domestic battery, not an injury. Here’s the official statement posted last night on UFC.com:

UFC lightweight Michael Johnson was ineligible to compete in the UFC organization following his arrest regarding a domestic dispute in Palm Beach County, Florida in April 2014. Given that the allegations against Johnson constituted a potential violation of the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy, the UFC organization temporarily barred Johnson from competition pending the completion of a third-party investigation. Following a thorough review and investigation—including personal interviews with Johnson and independent confirmation that he has satisfied all obligations required by the UFC—Johnson is once again eligible to compete and will begin training for his next fight at UFC Fight Night: Evans vs. Teixeira in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The UFC will continue to monitor Johnson’s status. He must fully comply with the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy and all other contractual and additional obligations in order to continue competing in the UFC.

All UFC athletes are required to comply with the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy they signed along with their fight contract. The UFC organization will not tolerate any violation of its Fighter Conduct Policy. The organization is committed to thoroughly investigating all allegations and taking the appropriate action when warranted.

Johnson was booked in Palm Beach County, Florida, at 2:30 a.m. on April 9th on a charge of “battery – touch or strike.” Johnson reportedly has other domestic violence charges pending, and already has a court date scheduled for February 25th — three days after his scheduled fight with Barboza in Brazil — for driving on a revoked license.

A few thoughts…

A few thoughts…

– The timeline of this whole thing is bizarre. Johnson gets arrested in April, the UFC books him for a fight against Josh Thomson in May, then the UFC announces he’s “injured” in July…but doesn’t reveal the truth about his arrest until late December, two days after announcing his next fight? Maybe the UFC figured it had enough domestic-violence-related publicity for the year, between Thiago Silva, Anthony Johnson, and the horrific headlines produced by ex-UFC fighters War Machine and Josh Grispi.

– I wonder how often “undisclosed injury” really means “embarrassing arrest that we’d rather not publicize”?

– The UFC claims to have a “zero tolerance policy” on domestic violence…except Michael Johnson and Anthony Johnson were welcomed back to the UFC following “third-party investigations.” Meanwhile, Jason High’s lifetime ban for shoving a referee has remained in effect. Cool priorities, bro.
