Don't Forget About Sherk

It’s been all BJ all the time the last couple of weeks here, as we ramped up to UFC 84 with a few detailed reports of his fights. Today marks the release of the career TPR Report for BJ Penn and we have an article up at Yahoo Sports with some really interesting information about BJ’s jiu-jitsu and the way he passes guard.

But don’t think we forgot about Sherk. While the majority of his fights have been in smaller organizations, and thus, do not have readily accessible video, we are doing the best we can to learn what we can about Sherk’s time in the UFC. The first product of that study is released today, a detailed report on his fight with Nick Diaz. This is one of those odd fights where all three judges agree precisely on the scoring, but the fan community is up in arms. As the stats show, the fight was extremely close, nearly a draw. What are the chances that Penn-Sherk is that close?

The Career of Georges St. Pierre

Today marks the release of the career TPR report on Georges St. Pierre. Throughout his 17 career fights, St. Pierre has demonstrated an incredible level of dominance. His median TPR is 90 while his opponent’s median TPR stands at just 13. He doesn’t just look good, he makes his opponents look bad.

For a more detailed analysis of St. Pierre’s stats and what that might mean for his next fight, check out our article at Yahoo Sports. The column delves into St. Pierre’s striking, jiu-jitsu, and phenomenal wrestling.

To Keep You Busy…

A bunch of new, interesting stuff on the site today:

1. The full fight stats for Kimbo Slice vs. James Thompson. As anyone who watched the fight would know, the stats put Thompson ahead by quite a bit at the time of the stoppage. FightMetric had Thompson winning both of the first two rounds, the second one by a wide margin. When the fight ended, Thompson had outpointed Kimbo by more than 100 points.

2. The fight report on the fight between Matt Hughes and Renato “Charuto” Verissimo. The controversy about this decision got a rebirth thanks to a column by Josh Gross a little while ago. This is one of those fights for which the stats are pretty inconclusive. With two rounds scored as draws and the extreme rarity by which judges call 10-10 rounds, it’s easy to see how this could be scored either way.

3. The career report for Matt Hughes. Or, more accurately, the UFC career report for Matt Hughes. The report contains 18 of Hughes’ 19 UFC matches. It doesn’t seem like his first match (a decision win over Valeri Ignatov at UFC 22) has any video. While Hughes has looked pretty vulnerable in his last few fights, it’s important to remember how dominant he was. Keep an eye out for an analysis of the careers of Hughes and Georges St. Pierre. The UFC likes to describe Hughes as “the most dominant welterweight of all time.” No one doubts that he was. Is he still?

But that will have to wait. We will be taking a vacation starting tomorrow; no email, no TV, no pay-per-view. So coverage of UFC 85 will be delayed about a week. In the meantime, enjoy!
