The name Alma Juniku may not be widely known amongst the ONE Championship fanbase but expect all that to change come 15 June in Shanghai, China.

The 18-year-old Australian is looking to write her name into the history books by becoming the first female Australian ONE World Champion. All that stands between Juniku and her dream is the current reigning ONE Atomweight Muay Thai World Champion Stamp Fairtex.

The two will meet in the main event of ONE: LEGENDARY QUEST, which will be held in Shanghai’s Baoshan Arena.

Juniku will attempt to wrest the ONE Atomweight Muay Thai World Title away from the Stamp, and the bout has all the hallmarks of a classic contest.

Stamp is undefeated since arriving at ONE, and the 21-year-old has looked unstoppable since joining the world’s largest martial arts organization. Training out of the world-renowned Fairtex Training Center, the Thai has managed to capture both the ONE Women’s Atomweight Muay Thai and Kickboxing World Titles in just her first two bouts on ONE’s main roster.

However, don’t expect Juniku to be overawed by the opportunity she has been presented with. The Brisbane based athlete has been competing in Muay Thai bouts since she was a child and has been filling her trophy cabinet ever since she first laced up her gloves for a competitive fixture.

“I looked up to mainly the Thai fighters such as Buakaw and Saenchai, their style and power was something I admired and always wanted to be like,” Juniku said.

A WBC Muay Thai World Champion, Juniku was recently crowned the WBC Muay Thai Female Fighter of the Year for 2018. So while she may not have stepped into the ONE ring before, fans should not be surprised by the fact that the Modern Warrior Muay Thai trained athlete appears to be taking everything in her stride in the lead up to what up until now will be the biggest bout of her career.

“It’s nothing new to me, I’ve always fought main event, and it won’t be the first time going for a belt, I’m so excited and feel privileged I get to be main event on an amazing card,” Juniku said.

While Juniku had set your sights on a meeting with Stamp, she did not foresee just how quickly her wish would be granted.

“It was pretty unexpected. I remember putting up a post saying I’d like to compete against Stamp Fairtex in the future and then a week later I got offered a bout with her and I signed a contract with ONE I was so shocked but super stoked and happy!”

Wanting to compete against Stamp and competing against the Thai are two very different things. Stamp has steamrolled her recent opposition and looks to be improving with every matchup she participates in.

Juniku and her team are well aware of the challenge they will face in China, and have been doing everything in their power to ensure that when the opening bell sounds, they are ready for the task ahead of them.

“Stamp is a very strong and technical athlete. My team and I have studied her a bit, and we’ve been working on our game plan,” Juniku said.

The Australian may have been competing in the sport for almost a decade, but she is planning on being around for some time to come.

“I’m super grateful for all the opportunities I’ve been given especially a shot at the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Title. My goal in the next few years would definitely to be winning my bouts and receiving more belts.”

Adding a ONE World Title to her collection would be no doubt be right up at the top of her list of belts she would like to add to her list of accomplishments.

Zhang Chenglong Looks To Knock Opponent Out In China

After a close shave encounter in his first two bouts, “Muay Thai Boy” Zhang Chenglong is determined to get his first knockout with ONE Championship at ONE: LEGENDARY QUEST.

Zhang will be facing Tyler Hardcastle on June 15 at the Baoshan Arena in Shanghai, China looking to get his third consecutive win in front of his countrymen.

Having difficulties finding his range in the first two rounds against Muay Thai Champion Panicos Yusuf, the Chinese athlete made one final push in the final 90 seconds that secured his victory

“In round three, I decided to go all-out because I had nothing more to lose. That was the last chance, otherwise, I would lose the bout,” Zhang said. “I was all-in – I focused on attacking and I forgot everything about defense. Then, I seized a chance when he tried to kick and knocked him down.”

Having been on the receiving end of a massive overhand right from Zhang, Yusuf was able to stand immediately only to go down again on a straight left punch. The Cyprian refused to stay down but the damage was done as he lost by unanimous decision.

After reviewing his performance, the Shengli Fight Club representative discovered that he still has a long way to go if he dreams of owning a ONE World Title.

“I’m satisfied with my performance in round three, but I didn’t expect him to be so good that I could barely hit him [in the first two]. I must improve in all aspects,” Zhang said.

“I used to picture myself as a technical type of fighter, but this opponent showed me he was much more skillful.”

“In my preparation for this bout [against Hardcastle], I think that I still need to improve skills like my punching power. Based on what I’ve learned from the videos, he fought mostly in Muay Thai, and his weakness lies in his boxing. My strategy is to keep him at close range. I’ll keep striking at him on the inside. His boxing is not so good, so this time I think I have a chance to finish by KO,” he added.

ONE: LEGENDARY QUEST may be one of the most important matches that Zhang will compete in. He hopes to give the best performance of his career and get his long-sought knockout.

“The bout on 15 June in Shanghai is important for me because I haven’t fought in my home country for a long time,” Zhang concluded.

“I can’t wait to feel the passion of my fellow countrymen. I defeated my first opponent by decision, and the second with knockdowns. The third one will be finished by KO.”

Dana White Wants Sage Northcutt To Retire After ONE Championship KO Loss

UFC President Dana White believes mixed martial arts (MMA) is not the right sport for Sage Northcutt, and thinks it’s best for him to retire. UFC President Dana White believes mixed martial arts (MMA) is not the right sport for Sage Northcutt, and thinks it’s best for him to retire.

Northcutt was on the receiving end of a brutal first-round knockout during his ONE Championship debut last month against Cosmo Alexandre. The finish went viral on social media as the 23-year-old suffered eight fractures and required a nine-hour surgery. Many have criticized ONE Championship for matching him up with such a high-level kickboxer for his debut.

However, White, who let Northcutt go from the UFC, thinks he simply might be in the wrong sport:

“Yeah [he’s not good enough],” White said in a recent interview. “It’s not that the kid doesn’t have some talent. He does have some talent. [But] this isn’t the sport for him. He needs to retire.

And hopefully the people that surround him listen to what I’m saying and set this kid on another path in life, because he can literally do whatever he wants to do. He’s young, he’s smart. Some people have to fight. Sage Northcutt doesn’t have to fight.”

White added that Northcutt could do anything he wanted, especially something that doesn’t include suffering the kind of injuries that he did against Alexandre:

“I would really like to see Sage Northcutt retire,” White added. “I hope he does. Good looking, charismatic kid, smart. He was an engineer, taking college to be an engineer. He’s got a lot going on in his life.

This isn’t the sport for him. I don’t want to sound like I’m sh*tting all over the guy because I really like the kid a lot, but this isn’t the sport for him. I would love to see him retire before he seriously gets hurt.”

It might seem harsh from White, considering that was Northcutt’s first knockout defeat. He also holds a record of 11-3 so it’s not like he’s been losing fight after fight either. Regardless, what do you think Northcutt should do?

Demetrious Johnson Rules Out Rematch With RIZIN’s Kyoji Horiguchi

Demetrious Johnson sees no need to run things back with Kyoji Horiguchi.

When Johnson was the reigning UFC flyweight champion, he submitted Horiguchi with just one second remaining in their UFC 186 fight back in April 2015.

That was his sixth title defense and since then, “Mighty Mouse” would defend his title another five times for a total of 11 — a UFC record — before losing to Henry Cejudo last year.

Now at ONE Championship where he enjoyed a successful debut at the promotion’s flyweight grand prix, Johnson is looking to add more gold to his collection.

As for Horiguchi, he has not lost a single bout in his next 12 outings since that defeat to Johnson, and is the current RIZIN bantamweight champion.

With Johnson at ONE, a rematch is more than possible and would certainly be intriguing given how both fighters have continued to improve since their first meeting. However, Johnson doesn’t think it will happen.

“No I don’t think [I’d fight Horiguchi again],” Johnson told BJPenn.com. “I have my sights set on winning the ONE World Grand Prix and winning the belt. I think he’s more focused on going to Bellator and I’m more focused on keeping on competing here. And at the end of the day, I won the last fight, so there’s no reason I would seek out another fight with somebody I already beat. I’m looking to accomplish things I haven’t been able to accomplish yet.

“I love ONE Championship, I love what they do, I love what they stand for as a company, the way they treat their athletes. It’s an amazing company and I look forward to finishing off my career with them.”

Johnson seems pretty certain, but anything is possible in mixed martial arts.

Former UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson has had an interesting journey to ONE Championship, just like Sage Northcutt.

ONE Championship signed Johnson as part of a trade with the UFC, who got Ben Askren in return last year. The former UFC champion is part of World Grand Prix tournament under the ONE banner in the flyweight division. He’s fresh off a submission win over Yuya Wakamatsu in Tokyo this past March.

Henry Cejudo shocked the world when he was able to beat Johnson to capture the UFC flyweight title by split decision. This fight ended up being Johnson’s last fight in the UFC. Johnson came into the fight looking to defend his title successfully for the 12th time in his career, but that was not the case. Now, he looks forward.

While doing a recent interview, Johnson gave his take about how fellow former UFC star Sage Northcutt’s promotional debut went. Northcutt signed with ONE after his UFC contract expired earlier this year.

The 23-year-old went one-on-one with Cosmo Alexandre at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore earlier this month. The fight only lasted 29 seconds once Alexandre landed a right hand that knocked Northcutt out cold:

“I did [watch it]… It’s tough,” Johnson told BJPenn.com, discussing Northcutt’s debut in particular. “It’s mixed martial arts. Anything can happen. Cosmo Alexandre, he’s a tough dude, great kickboxer, obviously has a lot of power in his hands.

“Any fighter on any day can lose. You can ask any fighter, that’s just the reality of fighting.”

Demetrious Johnson is undoubtably the greatest flyweight in mixed martial arts (MMA) history.

“Mighty Mouse” once found himself on a 13-fight win streak and capturing the UFC record for most consecutive title defenses at 11. He was then defeated by Henry Cejudo at UFC 227 via split decision, a fight that ultimately proved to be his last in the UFC.

Johnson was then traded to ONE Championship, where he made a thunderous debut with a second-round submission win over Yuya Wakamatsu. Now, Johnson is on a quest to capture the ONE Championship flyweight title, a feat he says would be the “cherry on top” of a legendary career (via BJPenn.com):

“I’d be ecstatic [to win the ONE flyweight title], it’d be another notch on my legacy,” Johnson said.

“My mindset right now is staying healthy and putting on amazing fights for ONE Championship. You know, I was the champion [in the UFC] for six years, I defended the title 11 times consecutively, pulled off some amazing submissions, pulled off some amazing fights. So for me, it’s a cherry on top.”

At 32-years-old, Johnson is already working on his retirement plan. Once he’s ready to finally hang up his gloves for good, Johnson wants to focus most of his time with his family:

“100% [I’d continue to work with ONE], as long as I’m able to do it and be a part of my children’s lives,” Johnson said. “When I retire from mixed martial arts, then most of my time is going to go towards catering to my family. I spend so much time away from them when I’m getting ready for the fights.

“It wouldn’t be fair of me if I was like ‘ok now I’m going to the second part of my career, and I’m leaving you guys for a long time.’ At the end of the day, I will be a part of ONE Championship and Esports, but I will be a part of my children’s lives.”
