Timofey Nastyukhin believes Eddie Alvarez’s head was already in the final of the ONE Championship lightweight grand prix.

Nastyukhin scored the biggest win of his career when he finished Alvarez in the first round of their lightweight grand prix quarterfinal last month at ONE: A New Era.

It was a result that shocked many in the MMA world as most expected “The Underground King” to steamroll the competition.

Reflecting on the fight a couple of weeks later, Nastyukhin believes Alvarez may have been thinking the same.

“It’s simple, the grand prix grid was made for Alvarez,” Nastyukhin told Sherdog in a recent interview. “He’s the star, and he truly deserves this status, so he became everyone’s favorite in the fight.

“However, he was not ready for this fight. He looked past me. His head was already in the final. I was an underdog, and it was not just in the comments on the social networks.”

Taking an opportunity

Nastyukhin’s stock has risen since that win and it’s a result of taking a chance that comes very rarely for the Russian.

“I don’t care about my opponent’s reputation,” he added. “I’ve never chosen my opponents. I was glad that it was me who was fighting Alvarez. Such a chance comes very rarely, so I could not turn down this fight.”

For his part, Alvarez congratulated Nastyukhin after the fight and claimed he was trigger-shy which eventually led to his defeat.

History was made when ONE Championship held their ONE: A NEW ERA event in Japan last 31 March.

For starters, this was ONE’s first ever event in The Land of the Rising Sun, and with 15 bouts and 23 world champions across multiple pillars of martial arts, this was also the biggest event in martial arts history.

Held at the historic Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, ONE: A NEW ERA hosted a super-stacked card that featured four world title bouts, three ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix quarter-final bouts, a ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix quarter-final bout, the promotional debuts of Demetrious Johnson and Eddie Alvarez.

All of these factors made it easily ONE Championship’s biggest event ever.

Outside the cage however, even more history was made, as ONE: A NEW ERA turned out to be a viewership magnet. The event pulled in a remarkable 41.9 million viewers worldwide, as revealed by ONE Championship chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong.

“I’m thrilled to announce that ONE: A New Era in Japan broke a new record viewership high for ONE Championship with 41.9m viewers from around the world,” Sityodtong said on Facebook.

As impressive as that figure sounds, Sityodtong shared that the actually fell short of their target. Still, Sityodtong was nothing but grateful to the fans who contributed to the record-breaking number.

“While it did not hit the target of 50m that my team and I had set out to achieve when we decided to throw this mega event in Tokyo, I am full of gratitude and appreciation to the greatest fans in the world,” he stated.

Aside from the number of viewers, ONE: A NEW ERA was also a hot topic on social media, as it became one of the top trends in different big-market countries.

“ONE Championship even trended #1 or #2 on Twitter in various countries such as US, Japan, Singapore, Australia, etc during that show,” Sityodtong added.

ONE Championship has definitely come quite a long way from their humble beginnings, and even just as early as 2015 when the numbers weren’t as extravagant. Yet, Sityodtong says that this is just the beginning of what they hope to be even bigger figures.

“For perspective, our viewership averaged only 700k viewers per event in 2015. Our 3 year goal is to achieve an average of 100m viewers per event,” Sityodtong said. “It might sound crazy, but I work with the best team on the planet!”.

Mixed martial arts as an olympic sport? It could be a reality, according to ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong. In fact, the organization’s massive push towards bringing amateur mixed martial arts to the biggest global stage of competition has seen it inking a multi-year seven-figure partnership with the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts (GAMMA).

“ONE Championship is thrilled to announce a multi-year partnership with GAMMA, the world’s independent governing body of the sport of mixed martial arts,” Sityodtong stated through a Press Release.

“As a lifelong martial artist, I am personally invested in developing the amateur mixed martial arts scene, and ensuring that all athletes have the right foundation and support to pursue a professional career in this sport.”

Based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, GAMMA is a non-profit organization founded in 2018. It was built by a group of mixed martial arts pioneers and experts, across five continents with decades of experience in the sport among them.

Headed by its President, Alexander Engelhardt, GAMMA today is made up of national federations across over 60 countries — a number which could grow to over 100 in the near future, according to Sityodtong.

GAMMA’s main objective is to obtain international recognition for mixed martial arts as an Olympic sport, in order to give all amateur mixed martial artists the platform and opportunity to fulfil their dream of competing on the Olympic stage.

Part of the partnership with GAMMA will see ONE share expertise and knowledge in the areas of developing and promoting best practices in health and safety standards, anti-doping regulations, and competition rules for the daily safe practice of competitive mixed martial arts at the amateur level.

“On behalf of GAMMA, I would like to thank ONE Championship for their support and commitment to the sport of mixed martial arts. As a lifelong karate practitioner, I am passionate about delivering the same level of international recognition to the discipline of mixed martial arts,” stated Alexander Engelhardt, President of GAMMA.

“Both GAMMA and ONE celebrate the authentic martial arts values of integrity, humility, honor, respect, courage, discipline, and compassion in the same spirit as the Olympics. With this philosophical foundation, GAMMA and ONE aim to elevate the sport of mixed martial arts and prepare it for entry into the Olympics.”

GAMMA is set to hold its Amateur MMA World Championships in Singapore this November, showcasing the world’s biggest and brightest young martial arts talents on the most prestigious global amateur mixed martial arts platform.

ONE Championship CEO and Chairman Chatri Sityodtong announced on Facebook over the weekend that the Tokyo card was watched by almost 42 million viewers worldwide.

It is a staggering result for a company that in 2015 was averaging 700,000 viewers per event.

LowKick MMA reached out to ONE asking for a breakdown of the numbers. ONE responded that the final figure was tallied based on data from a range of sources.

These sources included, but were not limited to, Nielsen, Kanter, Gfk, Eurodata, Video Research, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Tencent, and the ONE app.

It would be interesting to see a regional breakdown of those numbers. ONE’s current stronghold is Southeast Asia, but they are starting to push into markets further abroad.

Sityodtong has set an ambitious target in wanting 100 million viewers per event by 2022. However, if they keep this rate going, who would bet against them hitting their goal?

Welcome back, Martin Nguyen. The defending ONE featherweight champion put on a spectacular show on his return bout from injury.

The 30-year-old Vietnamese-Australian retained his title at ONE: Roots Of Honor with a superb knockout of Mongolia’s Narantungalag Jadambaa Jadambaa.

Both men were up for this fight, but it was Nguyen, the younger athlete by 13 years, who had more pop in his strikes. He was also quicker on his feet. Nguyen avoided being caught by any of Jadambaa’s heavy shots in the opening round and looked the fresher fighter coming into the second. The defending champion then went to work on his opponents left leg, with a series of blistering kicks.

Jadambaa, limping at this stage, backed himself against the cage. Nguyen, sensing his opportunity, then launched his aerial assault. A flying knee caught the Mongolian perfectly to stop the contest instantly.

Nguyen could not have scripted a better comeback performance.

In the nine months that Nguyen has been on the sidelines, ONE has undergone something of a transformation with all their new star signings. However tonight, he reminded everybody of how good he is when fully fit and injury-free.

In the evening’s co-main event, Filipino Joshua Pacio made sure the home fans went home smiling. Pacio reclaimed his title from Japan’s Yosuke Saruta with a stunning fourth-round knockout.

The hometown hero had to work for his win as he was sent to the canvas in the first round. However, as the rounds ticked off, Pacio came into his own and began to assert control of the fight. Pacio’s win ends a poor run for Team Lakay that has seen the camp lose three of their four ONE titles.

It was a good night overall for the Singapore-based promotion with a number of entertaining contests. The worry must have been that after the high of Japan, there would be a comedown, but that was avoided with a solid all-around show.
